Yoga session in Thane: Away from the TV, they found time for themselves MUMBAI Updated: May 29, 2015 21:59 IST In our busy lives we often forget to set time aside for ourselves, and whatever free time we have, we spend in front of the TV, said Tarun Kumar, 33, a sales professional. Today has been an eye-opener for me. I have decided to spend quality time in activities that will bring peace to my mind. Kumar was speaking after the free Patanjali yoga session organised by HT on Friday, as part of this years No TV Weekend Festival. The session began at 7 am, amid the lush greenery and chirping birds of Vijay Vilas Club House. Participants not only shut off the TV and stepped out to experience their city Thane, many also extended the concept to all screens and left their cellphones at home. This one hour was our own time, with no worries about family, job or life in general, and no cellphones to disturb us, said Kumar. The yoga instructors started the session with pranayam or breathing exercises, followed by simple stretching exercises and ending with a laughter session. This session was an excellent experience. I managed to sit in this position for more than an hour without experiencing any pain in my leg, said corporate manager Bhalchandra Sawant, 41. I now plan to continue doing these simple exercises regularly, to rid myself of the small aches and pains in my body. The instructors began with breathing exercises because mastering the technique of controlling your breath is important for health and longevity. Yoga leaves you feeling peaceful and refreshed through the day, said instructor Nitish Parekh. IT consultant Harsh Salin, 36, would agree. The session was rejuvenating, he said. Till four years ago, I regularly practised yoga and even attended several camps. Lately, I had begun putting it off, procrastinating. I feel so refreshed after these simple breathing exercises that it has reminded me of how good it can be for both mind and the body.

File pic Taking decisive action yesterday, Thane Joint Commissioner of Police (CP) V V Lakshmi Narayana ordered the transfer of 49 policemen including two officers from the Shil-Dayghar police station, and ordered an inquiry into their roles in the racket. Black bookOn April 15, the special branch of Thane Police had carried out a raid at Utsav Bar, and incredibly, the force found a diary at the premises that not only had the names of all the crooked cops, but also contained details of how much money they had taken to turn a blind eye to the illegal operations at the bar. “We had found a diary in the bar that mentioned that Senior Police Inspector R S Pawar of Shil-Dayghar police station took Rs 30,000 monthly, Inspector Uday Jadhav took Rs 10,000, police naiks took Rs 5,000 each, hawaldars took Rs 3,000 and other constables took Rs 1,000 per month,” said a cop, on condition of anonymity. There have been past instances of disgraced cops from the station who supported illegal activity on both fronts. Since 2013, this police station has seen three other senior cops transferred for allowing an illegal dance bar to run Senior Police Inspector Ashok Jagtap, Assistant Police Inspector A P Banjale and Police Naik T D Borse. In April 2013, in a separate case of illegal construction, Senior Inspector K P Naik and a constable were suspended over a building collapse on April 4, 2013, that killed 74 people. They had allegedly taken bribes to allow the illegal construction. Apart from its sullied reputation, the Shil-Dayghar police station now faces a more immediate problem: with the transfer of 49 cops nearly half of its full strength of 100 the station is severely short staffed and the authorities will have to begin filling these vacancies soon.

2015-05-29Automated debit card to help you breeze past Thane
Automated debit card to help you breeze past Thane, Navi Mumbai toll plazas MUMBAI Updated: May 28, 2015 21:44 IST Long wait at the toll plazas at Thane and Navi Mumbai may soon be a thing of the past. For, in the next three months, the public works department plans to take a slew of measures such as introduction of a special debit card with automated sensors, increasing the number of lanes and dividing the existing lanes to make your ride through the toll plazas hassle-free. The department, in a meeting at the Mantralaya on Tuesday, came up with a plan to put an end to the long queues at the toll plazas during morning and evening peak hours. We are getting a lot of complaints related to the queues at the toll nakas in Thane and Navi Mumbai. We want to phase out the concept of toll. We are taking steps to reduce peoples hassles, till we come up with a permanent solution [over the toll issue], said Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) minister Eknath Shinde, who chaired the meeting. To begin with, we will introduce a Maha card, a monthly debit card which can be used across the state. Whenever you pass a toll naka, the toll amount will get automatically debited from it. This will ensure the vehicles don't get stuck in queues, said Shinde, after the meeting. Both transport activists and motorists are sceptical about the plan. The cards will not make any difference unless the vehicles get radio-frequency identification tags. Around five years ago, the Nandan Nilekani committee had submitted a report on how this technology could prove to be of great help, but it was not taken forward. Lets hope this time the plan gets executed, said transport activist Rishi Agarwal. According to toll operators, forking out the existing lanes or increasing the number of lanes -- as has been done successfully in case of the Thane plaza -- could ensure smoother movement at the toll naka. The department has asked the MSRDC if they could construct elevated roads at toll nakas, so that double the number of vehicles could be taken care of at one go, said a PWD official. We will increase the number of lanes at a few places, and divide the existing ones at some other plazas. We are yet to take a call on elevated roads, Shinde said.

Thane station witnesses 200% rise in molestation cases in the last five years Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 29, 2015, 11.52 AM IST THANE: The Thane suburban railway station has witnessed a 200% rise in the number of molestation cases in the last five years. This has come to light as more women commuters are coming forward and lodging complaints against the offenders. In 2010, the government railway police (GRP) had registered a mere 15 molestation cases. However, the numbers have risen drastically in 2014 as the GRP recorded 55 cases. Earlier, women were not vocal about such incidents. But now they have started coming ahead and lodging complaints, claim GRP officials. ''Fewer molestation cases does not mean that women were not being harassed. It was just that no cases were being reported . Also, many times a molester would sneak away in the crowd. But today, if a woman is molested she lodges a complaint. At times even co-passengers help in nabbing the offender,'' said a Thane GRP. In order to ensure women safety, railways has stepped up security at the station.

2015-05-28Thane district girls outshine boys in board exams
Thane district girls outshine boys in board exams ANKITA G MENON | Thu, 28 May 2015-07:35am , DNA Thane district notched up a pass percentage of 90.48% in the Standard XII exams this year, a slight increase from last year's 89.23%. But girls in the district outshone boys by a massive margin- the pass percentage among girls is 91.69% whereas that among boys is 82.38%. Similarly, in Kalyan and Dombivli areas, the pass percentage is 88.57%, while Ambernath has a pass percentage of 88.39%. Of the institutes within Thane city, M Balniketan High School and Junior college, People's Education Society New English School and Junior College, St Agrasen High School and Junior college, Shubham Raje Junior college and PACE Junior science College have achieved cent percent results. Amongst the 1.09 lakh students from Thane who appeared for the Standard XII exams, 98,742 students have managed to pass. In Kalyan and Dombivli, institutes that have received cent percent results are Gurunanak English high school and junior college of Commerce, and Holy Angels Junior College. 21,756 students from the district appeared for exams in the arts stream and 84.89% is the pass percent. While 54,584 students appeared in the commerce section, 91.04% passed. Of 31,355 students in Science, 93.30% passed. HSC paper leaks, enquiry underway 92.80% students who appeared for the Book Keeping and Accountancy exam have passed. This figure is significant because on March 10, the Book keeping and Accountancy paper was leaked through WhatsApp half an hour before the exam began. This led the Mumbai division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education to file a complaint with the Navi Mumbai police. Within a fortnight a crime branch team managed to trace the messages to a teacher and a trustee of a school in Malad. They were arrested soon after, and released on bail. Since then there has been no progress on the case. "Our duty ends once the criminal is out on bail, now the lawyers and the court will handle it till it comes back under police jurisdiction," said Pratibha Shenge, Police Inspector, Cyber Crime, Navi Mumbai. Despite the leak, the board decided to go ahead with the examination and correction process. "We have decided not to have a retest as there was not much time for students to circulate the leaked paper, given that all centres have students within the exam hall half an hour before the exam starts. There is hardly a chance for the paper to have been leaked. But, we will initiate further action only after the police completes their enquiry process. We are waiting for a go-ahead from the police," said Laxmikant Pande, Chairman of the board.

Thane: Builder throws huge bash as son hits puberty By Vinay Dalvi |Posted 3 hours As the boy turned 17 last week, 275 people witnessed the grand ceremony in which he shaved for the first time in his life; guests were then treated to cake, the choicest of delicacies, alcohol and a DJ playing popular numbers Diva, a suburb near Thane, saw a unique celebration last week when a local builder threw a huge bash to mark his son turning 17 and hitting puberty. Hundreds of people witnessed the momentous occasion when the boy shaved for the first time in his life. Jitendra Bhagat with his son Dweep. Pic/Sameer Markande The centre of attraction was Dweep Bhagat (17), the son of Jitendra Bhagat, a local builder in Diva. The family belongs to the Agri community, who are known as the original residents of Mumbai. The community owns large pockets of land in the suburbs many of which have been sold to commercial builders. Dweep put a razor to his chin for the first time on May 22 The Bhagats, too, have an entire building to their name. The structure was built on land they owned, and the builder gave the family a few flats in the apartment building. The Agris are well known for their zest for celebrating the smallest of events in grand fashion. A banner in Diva announcing the ‘shaving’ ceremony The western part of Diva has a substantial Agri population, and many people are seen flaunting their Audis, BMWs and other such luxury cars in various parts of Thane district. Even by the community’s lavish standards, however, this was a never-before-seen event. Beard necessityJitendra sent invitation cards to hundreds of people from his community, and flex banners and posters were put up in the area inviting people to come see Dweep put a razor to his chin on his birthday, May 22. A pandal was erected for the same and Dweep cut a three-layer cake to mark the occasion. Speaking to mid-day, Jitendra said, “I have only one son and I have a lot of dreams for him. As Dweep was turning 17, I wanted to organise a function to mark the first time he shaved. On my insistence, he had not shaved till then. I wanted to invite everyone so he could shave in front of them.” While many a guest expressed surprise at the ceremony, they were quick to point out that the community has a lot of wealth and could afford such luxuries. “No such function has ever been organised in our community. We have also heard about such a thing for the first time. But then, people have a lot of money and they don’t know where to spend it. I know of an Agri who wears ten tolas of gold,” quipped a guest who attended the event, on condition of anonymity. “I am proud of my son. He is doing well in his studies and scored 54 per cent marks in his Std X board exams. Now he is studying for his HSC exams. I am sure he will score 70 per cent. I always wanted to do something for him. That’s why we organised this function without thinking of any expenses,” Jitendra added. While Jitendra refused to put a number on the money spent, sources said around 275 people attended the programme in which the guests were offered the choicest of non-vegetarian dishes (fish and mutton are popular delicacies in the community). Vegetarian options were also available and booze for those who love their tipple. And then, of course, there was a DJ who played popular numbers.

2015-05-27Private structures come up on Thane wetlands - Tim
Private structures come up on Thane wetlands Vijay Singh | TNN | May 27, 2015, 06.00 AM IST NAVI MUMBAI: Despite a two-year-old public interest litigation (PIL 87 of 2013) on wetlands in the Bombay High Court and a report of the forest department detailing illegal activities on protected wetlands, environmentalists say private structures are mushrooming on the Dive-Anjur stretch along Thane-Bhiwandi road. In July 2014, following a Bombay High Court directive, the chief conservator of forests (mangrove cell) N Vasudevan submitted a damning report to the HC about the destruction of wetlands around Mumbai. One of these sites mentioned in the report was the 1.5km stretch of Dive-Anjur in Bhiwandi taluka. On Tuesday, the NGO Vanashakti, the petitioner in the PIL, said more damage has been done at Dive-Anjur and private commercial structures have come up after brazen reclamation of mangroves, bypassing CRZ laws. In the formal submitted report last year, Vasudevan stated that certain private structures were coming up on the 1.5km long wetlands, after illegal dumping of debris. Activist D Stalin of Vanashakti told TOI: "In the last two years since we filed a PIL in the high court on protection of wetlands, there has been massive destruction of mangroves along the 1.5km stretch between Dive and Anjur, on both sides of the Thane-Bhiwandi road. Close to 2,000 truckloads of earth and debris have been dumped on the mangroves to reclaim the creek land." "The Thane collectorate could not protect the wetlands here. As petitioners, we have sent a notice to the government authority in this regard and will tell the court about it in the next hearing on June 11,'' Stalin said. However, the Thane collector Ashwini Joshi denied the NGO's allegation of contempt of court. "Our Bhiwandi taluka officials and I have also inspected the Dive Anjur stretch in the past and done everything to conserve the wetlands. We have also opened up the blocked water channels so that the creek water can freely flow to the mangroves,'' said Joshi. She added that besides filing FIRs against the illegal activities, the officials are also stalling any dumpers entering the wetlands. With regards to the private structures coming up at the spot, the collector stated that those are on "private land". Bhiwandi tehsildar Vaishali Lambhate told TOI: "The latest FIR was filed around a month back against certain persons for damaging wetlands on the Dive-Anjur stretch." However, when TOI asked the Thane collector how certain structures have come up next to the Thane-Bhiwandi road, Joshi said: "The said structures have come up on a private land plot, and not in the wetland." Stalin, though, said there is no way that any private land plot can exist in what where once lush green mangroves. Times View Complete destruction of these mangroves over period of two years, despite assurances by the government in a court, is shocking. More disconcerting, the government agencies tasked with protecting these environmental assets have just stood by and watched it. The state machinery should show the willingness to walk the talk. Merely going through the motions, such as filing an FIR, is not enough.

Sunny Leone, Accused in Obscenity Case, Visits Thane Police Station Updated: May 28, 2015 00:20 IST MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Sunny Leone visited the cyber crime cell of the Thane Police today to record a statement in an obscenity case filed earlier this month by a Mumbai housewife. Inspector Jagdish Sawant of the cyber crime unit said they are carrying out investigations after the Dombivali resident filed a First Information Report or FIR against Ms Leone who has been booked under the Information Technology Act and Indecent Representation of Women Act. It accuses Ms Leone, a former adult film star, of circulating obscene content on the Internet - a crime that carries a punishment of up to five years in jail. Mr Sawant clarified that Ms Leone's Bollywood films were not included in the complaint, which was filed on May 14. The woman has complained that the Ek Paheli Leela star has posted pictures that amount to circulating pornographic material. "Such posts poison the minds of people and especially children," the complaint said. "This actor is coming here and displaying vulgarity. Bollywood films could earlier be watched with families. Today we cannot see them with our families. When I visited her website I found that it was not fit for viewing. That's why I lodged this complaint," the complainant told reporters some days earlier after filing the complaint. She also alleged that watching Ms Leone's videos "can lead to rape" and has demanded that the website be shut down. Sunny Leone, 34, made her Bollywood debut in 2012 film Jism 2. She was last seen in Kuch Kuch Locha Hai, released May 8.

Thane: Passengers jump off slow moving train headed for Kalwa car shed By PTI |Posted 26-May-2015 Around 50 passengers who boarded a local train at Kurla railway station, jumped onto the Vikhroli railway station's platform number one, after they realised that it was headed for the Kalwa railway car shed, a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said in Mumbai on Tuesday No passenger was injured since the speed of the train was slow and hence no complaint was registered, though the Vikhroli railway station master has made a note of the incident in his diary, GRP sub-inspector Sitaram Mali said. "The incident happened at 11.07 am when a Kalwa railway carshed bound suburban local train reached Vikhroli station's platform number one, where passengers jumped from the slow moving train," the GRP official said. "According to our preliminary enquiry, passengers said that no announcement was made at the Kurla railway station that passengers must not board the train since it was headed for the Kalwa railway carshed," the GRP official said, adding that he has filed a report to the control room. The passengers who had boarded the slow local train at Kurla railway station, which started from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), had erroneously expected the train to halt at all suburban local railway stations, in the absence of any announcement, the GRP official said. However, after the slow suburban local train failed to stop at Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar railway stations, passengers jumped from their compartments in panic, onto the Vikhroli railway station platform, when it slowed down, after it failed to get a green signal, the GRP official said. "When it did not halt at Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar railway stations, they panicked and jumped off at the next Vikhroli railway station in desperation," the GRP official said.

The victim, identified as Neelam Bhosle, was pulled aside by Sudeep Ghavat, 25, as he said he had to discuss something important. An officer from Kapurbavdi police station said, "Ghavat had been upset for a while after Bhosle rejected his marriage proposal a few days ago." "On Tuesday evening, at around 8pm, while both of them were still at work, Ghavat called Bhosle and asked her to accompany him to the parking lot as he had something important to discuss. What ensued in the parking lot was a heated argument following which Ghavat pulled out a kitchen knife and attacked Bhosle," police said. Bhosle's screams to be left alone alerted the security guards around, who rushed to her help but by then Ghavat had already attacked her. She was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital, where she was declared critical and was undergoing a surgery at the time this went to press. "She was screaming for help and then suddenly fell on the ground bleeding. Ghavat tried to flee but was nabbed by the people in the vicinity. We have taken him in our custody and further interrogation is on. Prima facie, it seems to be case of onesided love," said a police officer from Kapurbavdi police station.

Knot so strong: 10% rise in divorce cases filed every year in Thane Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | May 26, 2015, 04.16 AM IST THANE: The once unthinkable act of dissolving a marriage is turning out to be common here with the Thane family court witnessing a steady rise of 10 per cent every year in divorce cases filed by sparring partners. From 2012 up till March 2015, the single judge family court here has received as many as 3,269 new applications for divorce in addition to the pile up of pending pleas for divorce before the court. Of the total 8,874 divorce cases (new and pending) before the Thane family court, just about 29 per cent or 2,607 cases were disposed off till date, revealed data sourced from the courts. Marriage counsellors here said the rise in the divorce applications can be attributed to the fast-paced lifestyle in urban metros, changing attitudes and a greater financial independence of women. "Most people do not want to force themselves in a relationship which has collapsed and are not very willing to adjust all the time just for the sake of societal pressure. In fact, more and more people want to end the legal procedure swiftly without causing too much loss of sleep and money as well,'' said a city counsellor. She added that the common reason for couples seeking divorce is 'irrevocable differences' and most of the applicants are in the age-group of 30-35 years who have been married for anywhere between 10 years and less. The counsellor pointed out that large number of divorces are due to differences mainly arising from refusal to stay in a joint family, adultery, cultural difference, alcoholism, et al. The modern lifestyle and sharing no household responsibility is seen as another reason behind the increase in marital discord. A lawyer said that basically, the large number of applicants seeking divorce falls in the age group of below 30 years, especially among the affluent class and less in the lower strata of society. "Most applications are filed keeping in mind the pressure from family members from both sides and forcing them for giving birth to a child and within this phase they want to end the nuptial," said the advocate. On the other hand, the lawyer added that there are cases where a couples who have been married for 30 years, too, apply for divorces keeping in mind the property issues which they don't want to give to their in-laws at any cost. Jagdish Shingare, a Thane-based lawyer pointed out that the root of difference starts due to fast-paced lifestyles. In the cosmopolitan and semi-cosmopolitan culture, couples live by themselves and there are no elders to calm tempers and caution them against allowing small issues to escalate. In most of the corporate culture, due to long working hours couples spend very little time with each other and at times this leads to adulterous relations at workplaces. "In a recent trend, the women are now well-educated and economically independent and for them the interference from in-laws is unwelcome. At the same time for the educated class of woman, career goals and financial gains are more important than spending time with each other," added Shingare.

Thane: 28-year-old woman raped by her uncle Mon, 25 May 2015-11:56am , Thane , PTI A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her uncle at a village in Thane, police said on Monday. The woman, along with her husband and 38-year-old uncle, went for a pre-wedding function of a relative at Kajupada-Vadacha Pada village on Saturday night. After the function, the accused misled the woman by telling her that her husband had already left for home in Ganeshpuri village, assistant police inspector G K Matondkar said. Believing his uncle, the woman left the function venue alone. While she was proceeding towards home, the accused, who was following her, caught hold of her on the way. He then dragged her to a nearby forest and allegedly raped her, the police officer said, quoting the complaint filed by the woman on Sunday. He also threatened her with dire consequences if she informed about the incident to anybody, he said. Based on the complaint, the accused was arrested on Sunday night and charged with sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, police added.

2015-05-25'3 of six divorces in Thane family court are mutua
3 of six divorces in Thane family court are mutual Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 26, 2015, 04.24 AM IST THANE: Fifty of every 100 divorce applications in the Thane family court are mutual consent divorces. The growing trend, city lawyers believe, is due to the desire for a hassle-free and time-saving court procedure that allows couples to quickly move on with their lives. "In fact, 50 of every 100 divorce applications in the Thane family court are mutual consent divorces. Couples accept that nothing can save their marriage and they have to move on with life without any more confrontations. Of the five to six divorce applications in a day, two or three are seeking for divorce with mutual consent," said advocate S A Barbhai. In most cases, there is no one particular reason such as infidelity, alcoholism or complaint about unwillingness to share responsibilities to nullify the marriage but they simply state that their relationship is incompatible and do not intend to carry it forward as an obligation. Advocate Milind Kale, who practices law in the Thane family court said, "Youngsters today are very determined. If they make up their mind about getting a divorce they don't even attempt to change their minds. They don't want to waste their precious time in year-long litigation procedures and attend one hearing after another. If there is no custody matter in the divorce, they more often than not go for a mutual consent divorce. In every five divorce cases I see, there are at least three cases of mutual consent," he said. The decreasing alimony claims and problems in splitting of financial resources, which helps both the husband and wife settle their disagreements faster, is yet another reason why it is easier for couples to opt for mutual consent divorces today. "Women today are very independent. They earn their own money and handle their expenses. They are no longer dependent on men like women earlier were. Many don't even claim alimony and end their relationship on an amicable note," added Barbhai. A case of mutual consent lasts for a maximum of six months, including the prescribed counselling provided by the magistrate. Many couples firm on their decision to terminate the marriage also start planning their second marriage.

Pradeep Keer (52) and Puja Keer had filed for divorce and they had differences over the possession of their 10-year-old son. Puja had come to the ATM in the Tatwagyan Vidhyapeeth area around 1 pm with the owner of the company where she works as an accountant, Manjeet Anand (43), and a colleague. As she entered the ATM near the Cinewonder Mall in Kapurbawdi, Pradeep, who was following them, got into the ATM kiosk and attacked Puja with a knife. When she cried for help, Anand and the other passenger rushed to the kiosk. But Pradeep attacked them and they were also wounded. He was finally overpowered and handed over to the police by a few passers-by. Pradeep was working as a driver in a Churchgate-based firm. But in the last few days, he has not been reporting for work. Sanjeev Patil, police inspector from Kapurbawdi station, said Pradeep, who stayed in Dadar, was following Puja and her colleagues from their Andheri office on a bike. From the Andheri office, Puja and the two others went to Bhiwandi and were proceeding to Dahisar. Since employee wages were due, they stopped at the ATM and Puja went inside the kiosk. "We have recovered the knife which he was carrying. Since the accused alleged that his wife was having an extra-marital affair, we are investigating that also," Patil said. There were 12-13 knife wounds on Puja's body and they were deep. Anand and the other person were rushed to the nearby Titan hospital and later shifted to Jupiter hospital, where they are recovering. According to V Chandanshive, DCP zone V, "since the accused was carrying a knife in his pocket, there was murder intention". The couple were staying together in Dadar, but after their differences, Puja started staying separately in Andheri. She was wounded on her neck, shoulder, stomach and hands. Pradeep has been booked under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code.

Young divorcees in Thane giving arranged marriage a shot: Matchmakers Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 26, 2015, 04.25 AM IST THANE: Leaving behind their past experiences of soured marriages, disagreements, young divorcees are making fresh attempts at marriage. Marriage bureaus in the city, which are seeing a rise in the number of applications from divorced individuals, believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Most of those seeking a re-marriage are in the age group of 30-35 years. "Youngsters get carried away by Bollywood-influenced ideas of love and get married early. They do not realize the responsibilities that come with it and separate. Arranged marriages turn out to be incompatible too. Many such divorcees are opting for new alliances," said Ashwini Patwardhan, who runs a marriage bureau.

Man slides on water ride at Thane amusement park, lands in hospital By Sadaguru Pandit |Posted 3 hours An attempt to seek respite from the scorching heat by visiting a water park turned out to be a painful affair for Vikas Gangawane, as the 41-year-old sustained severe abdominal injuries at Tikuji-Ni-Wadi, an amusement park in Thane.Vikas Gangawane had gone toTikuji-Ni-Wadi with his wife, Milan, and son, Sai  The accident happened as a youngster crashed into him while on one of the rides at the park. Following the incident on May 20, Gangawane's wife and eight-year-old son took him to the Thane Civil Hospital in a rickshaw as the park authorities didn't have an ambulance to transport him. They didn't even offer adequate medical assistance and instead, sprayed a pain relief spray on her husband, alleged Vikas's wife, Milan. The family reached the hospital at 2.30 pm and on checking the ultrasound scan, the doctors pronounced Vikas as "critical", explaining that he ended up lacerating his large intestine and that there was an accumulation of fluids in his abdomen. Gangawane was shifted to KEM Hospital the same evening, where he was admitted in the emergency ward of the hospital. He was operated on the next day and the abdominal surgery left him with 25 stitches. Gangawane, who works as a social worker, continues to remain hospitalised. Dr Avinash Supe, Dean of KEM Hospital said that the patient's condition is stable after the operation and he is recuperating well. "The patient was suffering from pneumoretroperitoneum, which is caused by presence of gas in the abdominal cavity. Hence we had to operate on him next morning. He is stable now," said Supe. The incident took place when Gangawane, along with wife Milan (39) and son, Sai went to Tikuji-Ni-Wadi. At around 1pm, the family went on a water ride with slides which ended at a common pool. Although Vikas was dropped into the pool safely, within seconds another youngster followed him at lightning speed and hit him. "We didn't even realise what happened. The man came sliding fast, right after Vikas and hit him. Within moments we realised that his legs had crashed into my husband's abdomen and that he was in immense pain. I pulled him out of the pool and called for help," said Milan. Allegedly, the security guards, who were standing by the pool, had no clue about the incident and were busy talking among themselves. They didn't warn Vikas to move away from the slide once in the pool, either. The surgery cost the Gangawane family around Rs 25,000 till now. "We paid Rs 2,000 as entry fee to have a nice family outing at the park and ended up suffering. Amusement parks need to ensure that they have proper security guidelines as well as a post-trauma arrangement in place to avoid or attend to such accidents. I wish my husband gets well soon," said Milan. As the corporate office remain closed over the weekend, no official coult be contacted.

Four Thane kids go missing in four hours ARVIND WALMIKI | Sun, 24 May 2015-07:10am , DNA In separate cases, four children went missing from two areas of Thane within the span of a few hours on May 20. All aged between 10 and 16 years, the children are residents of Shil Daighar and Naupada. A case of kidnapping has been registered at the respective police stations. The children have been identified as Sunil Ramu Khate (10), Ganesh Shivaji Salukhe (11), Manish Rajesh Ram (16), residents of neighbouring Moti Desai and Padle Pada area, and Harshad Manohar Kadam (14), from Hazrat Noori Baba Dargha in Naupada. In the first case, the three children were playing in their society at approximately 11 am. At around noon, their respective parents went to call them for lunch, but didn't find them anywhere. A long search for them proved to be futile, which is when the parents approached the Shil Daighar police to file a case. The second case somewhat mirrors the first; at 3pm, 14-year-old Harshad Manohar Kadam told his parents he was going outside to play with some friends. When he didn't return home after a few hours, his parents tried looking for him, in vain. They then lodged a complaint with the Naupada police. An officer with Shil Daighar police revealed: "One of the missing boys' mother received a call from an unknown number. The caller told her that the three boys are in Murbad (Thane). We are tracing the area where the call came from to know the exact location." The officer added that investigations are ongoing. A Naupada police officer said: "We have launched a search for the missing boy. We will also talk to friends and relatives to see if they know anything about the child; a further probe is on."

This Thane fisherman nets out drowning people, dead bodies from creek Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 24, 2015, 04.36 PM IST THANE: For Rajesh Kharkar (45) work starts in the pre-dawn hours with the untangling of his nets and setting out in the Vitawa creek to catch fish, which he segregates and sells in the local market later. However, more often than not, this daily routine goes for a toss when he spends the better part of the day or night fishing out people who have either slipped in the creek from a running train or take the plunge to death. Having started rescuing people at the age of 15, Kharkar has given a second lease of life to some 2,500 people and fished around 3,000 dead bodies from the creek in the past three decades. Kharkar and 25 other brave hearts from the village were given the title of a Jeevan Rakshak (lifeguard) by the then commissioner of police, Arvind Akashi, in 2000, for their selfless and voluntary deeds. The card, which referred to the fisherman as an aid to the police, permitted them to rescue as many people they found drowning or fish out dead bodies and bring it to the notice of the authorities. However, for the past three years, the police officials here refuse to renew these cards. Afraid of the consequences of continuing to rescue people without the support of the police, 20 of these fishermen stopped doing so. This has, however, not hindered the efforts of Kharkar and five other like-minded fishermen here. "Only those living here, who are accustomed to these waters, can attempt to rescue drowning victims here. Those falling into the creek from trains cannot survive if we don't act immediately and wait for the fire brigade, who come after 20 to 40 minutes. Just last week, we rescued a mentally unstable man who was stranded on an island that would have be submerged completely in the creek at high tide," Kharkar said. The Vitawa fisherfolk believes that it is their duty to protect those in danger from the deep waters. "The creek has provided us with our livelihood. It is sacred for us, and saving the lives is our way to thank God for it," Kharkar said.

Reality bites buyers eyeing low-cost realty in Thane Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | May 24, 2015, 04.37 PM IST THANE: While developers in Thane may be hard-selling their projects in locations like Shil-Daighar, Parsik or even the interiors of Kasarvadavli as affordable homes, a cursory look at the prices of these homes reveals that they are out of reach for most of the working class families. Peripheral locations out of Thane near Shil-Daighar and Balkum are gradually witnessing a slew of new launches during the past one year, despite the waning interest of home buyers. A prominent developer had launched a project starting from Rs 4,000 sq ft a year ago, which has increased to nearly Rs 4,900 in the Shil area. Also, an upcoming project at Parsik Nagar has been nearly at a rate of Rs 8,100. "There is a higher concentration of premium projects, which have seen a surge in the past one to two years. The price rise has seen home buyers having limited purchasing ability. Also, there is a huge unsold inventory in the market and builders are in no mood to climb down,'' said a property dealer. Of the 26,014 homes available for sale in Thane in 2013-14, only 7,315 found takers, according to ASK property investment advisors, who conducted a survey of supply and absorption trends in Thane from January to September 2014. The average property prices which were hovering below Rs 5,000/sq ft till 2009, suddenly shot up to Rs 8,000 by December 2010. Till mid-2012, the graph further reached to Rs 10,000, the report further stated. Far-off areas have areas like Majiwada have premium projects which are priced at over Rs 10,000 per sq ft. Pratik Kulkarni, a 38-year-old marketing executive said, "We were planning to buy a small apartment at Ghodbunder a few years ago but back then we could not afford it as the EMIs would have taken up more than 60 per cent of our salaries. Now salaries have improved but rates have soared, which brings us back to the same situation." For example, price of a 2-BHK at Dosti Landmark-Balkum is over Rs 72 lakh, a flat in Lodha Blockbuster on Ghodbunder is Rs 67.83 lakh onwards while that of Rustomjee Urbania near Majiwade junction is priced over Rs 1.36 crore onwards for 2 and 3 BHKs, while a 1BHK at Runwal Eirene-Balkum is priced at Rs 54.84 lakh.

CNG cut and restored to TMT busses in Thane Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 21, 2015, 07.50 PM IST THANE: The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) snapped the supply of CNG fuel to the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) buses for five hours on Thursday, for defaulting on dues exceeding Rs 19 crores, but restored services after the undertaking released part payment of Rs 2 crores. The MGL authorities had recently cautioned the TMT to pay their dues accumulated over the last nine years or face a complete cut-off in supply of green fuel. The TMT has 123 buses running on CNG fuel and failure to recieve the supply would have put the services to a complete standstill causing immense hardships for the regular commuters. Nonetheless, the cash-starved TMT seemed to have taken a casual approach to deadline given by the MGL officials, compelling the fuel company to direct their gas stations here to turn down refuelling request by the TMT buses. "The buses start rolling from the depots at around 5am and first make a halt at the CNG outlets. However, the MGL outlets did not tank up any of the TMT buses till 10am," a civic official said. Over 123 TMT buses, functioning on this fuel, came to a standstill as they were not provided with CNG for almost 10 hours from 5am to 4pm. Anticipating the chaos that could erupt on the streets due to non-availability of public transport buses, the TMT officials rushed to Eknath Shinde, who is the MLA from Kopri-Panchpakhadi assembly constituency, for help. The guardian minister directed the TMT to release part payment to the MGL and subsequently telephoned the top officials there requesting a reprieve to the TMT. He also assured them that a provision will be made for remitting the balance payment. MGL resumed the CNG supply to the TMT late Thursday afternoon.

2015-05-21RTI unwraps Thane's weak fire-fighting infrastruct
RTI unwraps Thane's weak fire-fighting infrastructure Thursday, 21 May 2015 - 5:21pm IST | Rupali Shinde | Edited by: Vinaya Patil A Right to Information (RTI) application filed by the Dharmarajya Party revealed that Thane city was short of nine fire fighting stations. The RTI was filed by the party following the fateful Kalbadevi fire which took the lives of three fire fighters. It was further observed that the fire fighting stations did not have the required ladders for accessing tall buildings in emergency situations. The RTI reply also stated that by December 2015, three fire stations were supposed to become functional in Thane. As per the reply, Nitin Junction, Owala and Desai road were supposed to get these three stations. Owala and Desai road are only mentioned on paper, no construction had begun yet. It was also found that 384 positions in the fire stations are vacant. The water pumps too are of a low quality, in needs of up-gradation, said the General Seceratry of Dharamrajya Kamgaar Karmachari Mahasangh, Mahesh Singh Thakur. In 2015, three fire stations are likely to be functional, three more in 2020 and the remaining three in 2025, the RTI reply stated. This data is from January 2011 to March 2015 which also says that the existing fire stations are in need of 40 men, Thakur added. Arvind Mandke, Chief Fire Officer of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), however, said that regular fire audits were carried out for the city's fire stations. He added that the vacant posts will be filled soon. He also clarified that the fire fighters were getting all the basic facilities regularly. Rajan Raje, leader of Dharmarajya Party, had said that the party would protest in the evening today, May 21, at various places in Thane city as well as Byculla with regard to the death of the fire-fighters in the Kalabadevi fire incident. On May 21, families who lost their brave warriors will perform rites of the 13th day and we will thus protest tomorrow, he said.

2015-05-21CST-Thane trains to run on Saturday night - The As
CST-Thane trains to run on Saturday night May 22, 2015 | Age Correspondent | mumbai Share The Central Railways’ (CR) plan to finally convert the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Thane section from 1,500-volts Direct Current (DC) to 25,000-volts Alternating Current (AC) on Saturday night has been further postponed for safety reasons. The CR is already four years behind the Western Railway (WR), which had conducted the conversion back in 2011. Officials have said that due to some last minute changes the conversion has been pushed to either May 26 or 30. CR general manager Sunil Kumar Sood said that due some more preparations the dates have been pushed further. “We have some work left that we still have to get done so we have decided to push the conversion to either May 26 or 30. But it will surely happen in this time frame,” he said. According to sources, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Chetan Bakshi has objected to the conversion, saying that he was not consulted by CR officials before announcing the dates. When asked, Mr Bakshi refused to clarify, saying, “I have no information on this and it would be best if you ask CR officials about what and when it is going to happen. CR officials have said that Mr Bakshi has demanded a minimum of four days in order to conduct the required safety inspections before granting the certificate for conversion. Another fear amongst officers is that if the conversion is not done before the onset of monsoon in the city, the process will be delayed to post-monsoons and they will not have anything to show in railway minister Suresh Prabhu’s fortnightly plan from May 26 to June 9 to improve passenger services. 2015-05-20No CST-Thane trains on Saturday night - The Asian
No CST-Thane trains on Saturday night May 21, 2015 - Arpika Bhosale | mumbai Share Central Railway (CR) commuters will face inconvenience on Saturday night as officials plan to stop trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) from 10.30 pm onwards due to conversion from 1,500-V Direct Current (DC) to 25,000-V Alternating Current (AC). The dream of converting the CST-Thane section to AC will finally be completed on Saturday, but will come at a cost, with services being cut off from as early as 10.30 pm, an official, on the condition of anonymity, revealed. “The last train on the slow line will run at 10.30 am with Mumbra as its last stop and commuters who want to travel beyond that will have to get down at Thane or Mumbra and catch a train that goes further. The last train on the fast line will be at 11.00 pm from CST whose last stop will be at Kalyan, where, again, commuters can take the connecting train to Karjat/Kasara.” The trains will resume at only 6.00 am, making it one of the longest blocks taken by the CR during the night. This means that commuters will not have access to any local train between CST and Thane from 10.30-11.00 pm to 6.00 am and will either have to make travel arrangements accordingly. “We are still to work out some details and even when the trains resume the next day there will be an adjustment period of 30 to 45 minutes,” added the official. The block will not affect any trains on the Harbour towards Panvel as well as Andheri and the Trans-Harbour line. The division had recently come under fire for pushing up the last train on the same line from 12.41 am to 12.30 am from its April timetable. Milk Association announces indefinite ban on few milk brands in Thane Tuesday, 19 May 2015 - 9:06pm IST | Rupali Shinde Thane residents will have to wait some more for their choice of milk brand and switch to local brands, as the Thane Milk Welfare Association has decided to boycott a few milk brands from selling milk in Thane city from tomorrow, May 20. This time, along with Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivali residents too will face the brunt of this ban. The Association will ban Amul, Mother Dairy and and Gokul milk for not agreeing to pay a 10 per cent commission to the association on the MRP. We began the ban on April 21 and also gave the brands 15 days to think about the commission. But nothing worked out. Mahananda agreed to give a seven per cent commission but others didn't budge, said Pandurang Chodnekar, joint secretary of Thane Milk Welfare Association. He also added that when petrol-diesel prices fell, milk companies should have decreased the prices, instead, they increased the prices. We are only demanding a share from the profit, we don't intend to inconvenience the customers. An indefinite ban on these milk brands will be made effective in Thane along with Kalyan-Dombivali, Panvel, Kharghar, Kamothe and Pen, said Chodnekar. However, we are still open to discussions with milk companies, he said.

Thane-Belapur road to be new business hub May 18, 2015 - Shruti Ganapatye | mumbai Share New housing policy proposes conversion of 50% land into international financial centre The Thane-Belapur road in Navi Mumbai will emerge as a new business hub on the lines of the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in the city as it has 27 sq. km. of unused land. The newly-proposed housing policy has proposed to convert the land into an International Financial and Business Centre that will come up on 50 per cent of the land, while the remaining would be used for low-cost housing. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) had tried to transform the Thane-Belapur road into an industrial area in 1963 itself, but had not got the desired success. Many of its factories are now defunct and the land is not being used for the purpose initially conceived. Therefore the housing policy has proposed to develop the Thane-Belapur belt area, which is a prime property in Navi Mumbai, into a business hub like BKC. “The Thane-Belapur industrial estate known as TTC has many defunct businesses. The state industrial policy had permitted IT businesses on the premises. The TTC can be declared a financial centre on the lines of the BKC and the leaseholders will be permitted to develop the land for IT park and financial hub. Fifty per cent of the land in the TTC will be kept for low cost housing,” the housing policy has proposed. The state government is expected to release the policy soon. The policy has also pointed out that a few businesses are holding a major chunk of the TTC land in Navi Mumbai and they would have to start the financial centre in a year. “The business families and leaseholders will have to start work within 12 months,” the policy said, which would help boost development in the area. The housing, urban development and industries departments will declare FSI 4 for the TTC to develop as a financial centre. The government will charge a premium on it so that it can create affordable housing, the policy said. At present, the TTC has about 2,000 business units, but some 41,000 slums have occupied the land. An official in the housing department said the MIDC did not pay attention to the area and therefore the prime property had many encroachments. If the recommendations are implemented properly, the Navi Mumbai area will grab the attention of industries. Navi Mumbai has the potential to be an industrial hub as it has huge roads, uninterrupted electricity and water supply, the official said. Builders may get more FSI for buildings over 30 years in ThaneRadical changes have been proposed to the development rules whereby buildings that are 30 years and above will be eligible for the additional incentive of 15% of the base FSI if it goes for redevelopment.Nishikant Karlikar  |  16 May 2015, 8:33 AM IST Newsletter A A Tweet THANE: High-rises may soon stand tall in the old Thane city and goathan areas following the builder-driven plans by the TMC to lift the freeze on incentive FSI that is currently applicable only for buildings constructed before 1974. If this comes into effect, then all buildings that are over 30 years old and are in a dilapidated state will be eligible for additional FSI. The proposal will be taken up for discussion and approval in the general body on May 20.Radical changes have been proposed to the development rules whereby buildings that are 30 years and above will be eligible for the additional incentive of 15% of the base FSI if it goes for redevelopment. The FSI will determine the extent of construction that will be taken up in a particular plot. Simply put, redevelopment of buildings constructed in 1985 and prior will be eligible for an incentive FSI. In order to boost construction of high-rises in various areas, 30-year eligibility criteria will be applicable from the date a building's redevelopment plan is put before the town planning department.''The earlier cut off year of 1974 has been scrapped. This cut off was meant to control the density levels, especially in Thane where buildings are being constructed at every nook and corner of the city,'' said a city engineer. However, a section of the officials from the TMC have argued that the incentive FSI was a necessity as most building were constructed in the 1980's and are currently in a dilapidated state. The cap on FSI was creating a major hindrance in the process of their redevelopment, he said.At present, the old gaothan areas get an FSI of 1, on which 40% TDR is loaded and if the building is constructed before 1974 then the builder gets an incentive of 15% FSI, taking the total FSI to 1.55, sources said. Thane has nearly 1,061 buildings that are more than 30 years old. Of these, nearly 500 buildings have been constructed after 1974.Meanwhile, some civic officials feel the proposed higher FSI will only profit builders. ''Higher FSI means more constructions. More FSI does not translate into creating affordable housing. In fact, prices will be out of reach of the common man,'' a civic official said. 52-year-old biker rides into open drain in Thane, survives By Sadaguru Pandit |Posted 3 hours Scrap dealer Nazar Hussain was returning home when the mishap took place at Chavindra Kata; he was spotted by a local boy 20 minutes after the accident, who rushed him to a private hospital in Dombivli with the help of his friends  A 52-year-old scrap dealer had a brush with death after he drove his motorcycle into an uncovered drain at Chavindra Kata in Bhiwandi. The incident occurred around 11.30 pm on May 12, while Nazar Hussain was on his way home. Thanking his lucky stars: Nazar Hussain recuperating at KEM Hospital According to Hussain, it was the absence of streetlights in the lane that caused the mishap. He added he was in the drain for 20 minutes before a local boy, who knew him, spotted him. The boy then called his friends for help and they rushed him to a private hospital in Dombivli. Hussain injured his forehead, neck, and spinal cord in the accident. “I was entering the lane after five years and had no idea what to expect. I believe even local residents would have met with the same fate, as it was impossible to spot the open drain in the dark. I was lucky to be spotted by the youngster, who rushed me to the hospital,” said Hussain. At the hospital, family members were asked to shift him to a specialised hospital in Mumbai due to his spine injury that had resulted in numbness of his legs and hands. While plans were being made to move him to a private hospital, Hussain insisted on being admitted to KEM Hospital, claiming that he was familiar with the doctors and the quality of treatment. He was shifted to the facility on Thursday. Doctors at KEM said that Hussain’s condition could have deteriorated drastically, had he gone unnoticed in the drain for another 10 minutes. “The amount of blood he lost from the wound on his forehead could have proved fatal, had he not received timely medical aid. At present, the patient is experiencing numbness in his lower extremities due to the spine injury. He is under observation,” said the doctor treating Hussain. Despite repeated attempts, none of the officials from Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation were available for comment.

Since its inception, prepaid autos registered a mere 40 to 45 customers but the Viju Natekar rickshaw auto union is not facing losses, said Viju Natekar auto union president Bhai Tile of. "It is a new concept, it will take time to catch on. Initially, there was a problem of fares as per destination, but now we have fixed the fares as per km. The RTO has fixed the price per km," said Tile. Passengers had mixed reactions to the prepaid service. Shishir Shelar, 28, said, "It is of no use in Thane city. If they make it available to travel from Thane to Bhiwandi and longer routes, then definitely I will avail the service." Thane civic body to do away with school bags in Classes I, II Written by Dipti Singh | Mumbai | Published:May 16, 2015 1:45 am Even as the state government is thinking of ways to reduce the weight of school bags, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is set to become the first civic body to get rid of school bags. From the coming academic year, Class I and II students studying in TMC schools will go to school without bags. The civic body has started making arrangements for students to leave their books and other stationery in the schools itself. Every student will have a locker on their desks in the classroom. Besides, we will provide them with worksheets for classwork, which can be attached in a box file and left in school. This way, the student doesnt need to carry books to school. Hence, no bags will be needed, said Manish Joshi Deputy TMC Municipal Commissioner. At present, there are over 130 primary and 13 secondary schools under TMC, with nearly 7,000 students and more than 100 teachers. TMCs education officer Raghunath Beldar said, As a pilot project, we will implement the system for lower classes, that is class I and II in the beginning of the year. Later, the same will be extended for higher classes after checking the feasibility and making necessary arrangements. Once the school reopens in June, students will come to school without school bags. According to Joshi, the initiative was a result of a series of meetings with school teachers, education experts and consultants. Joshi said that TMCs education department is also working on making teaching and learning in classrooms more interactive. The TMC is also planning to get digital boards to replace the blackboards and providing tablet PCs to senior students. The said project, according to Thane Mayor Sanjay More, is an attempt to keep pace with private schools in Thane. We want to change peoples perspective towards civic schools. By making these changes, we will encourage students to come to school and reduce the dropout rate. We also want to provide quality education to our students, majority of whom come from slums and cannot afford to go private schools, said More.

Trustees on Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of the $145,000 contract, with trustees Jim Sadler and Diane Lorenzen absent. Thane said he's appreciative and enthused about being superintendent. "So thank you and I'm ready to dig in," he told trustees. Thane has more than 30 years of experience in education, largely with MCPS. His roles have included those of classroom teacher, principal, executive regional director and human resources director. The Montana native takes the helm of MCPS in the midst of its push for the $88 million elementary district and $70 million high school bond measures in November. In April, trustees voted to offer the one-year position to Thane after an interview process. Thane was the only internal candidate to apply after current Superintendent Alex Apostle announced he was retiring to take another superintendent job in Washington state. Benefits in the contract include sick, vacation and personal days, and a life insurance policy, as well as a monthly contribution by the district of $1,875 to a TSA of choice. Trustees still must discuss whether to look for a long-term superintendent through a regional or national search process or to offer an extended contract to Thane. Also during Tuesday's board meeting, outgoing trustees Sadler and Chairman Joseph Knapp Jr. were honored for their years of service on the board. Sadler, who served 21 years, was unseated by Lisa Triepke in the May 5 election, while Knapp opted not to run for re-election after six years on the school board. Both Sadler and Knapp said they are honored to have served on the board and that MCPS is a leader in providing exceptional opportunities to kids. "It has remarkable human beings and it turns out remarkable human beings," Knapp said about the district's employees and students. Everyone is thanking him, Sadler said, but he turned the appreciation to others. "I want to thank you because it's a great honor to have served the district," he said.

Builders may get more FSI for buildings over 30 years in Thane Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | May 15, 2015, 02.00 AM IST THANE: High-rises may soon stand tall in the old Thane city and goathan areas following the builder-driven plans by the TMC to lift the freeze on incentive FSI that is currently applicable only for buildings constructed before 1974. If this comes into effect, then all buildings that are over 30 years old and are in a dilapidated state will be eligible for additional FSI. The proposal will be taken up for discussion and approval in the general body on May 20. Radical changes have been proposed to the development rules whereby buildings that are 30 years and above will be eligible for the additional incentive of 15% of the base FSI if it goes for redevelopment. The FSI will determine the extent of construction that will be taken up in a particular plot. Simply put, redevelopment of buildings constructed in 1985 and prior will be eligible for an incentive FSI. In order to boost construction of high-rises in various areas, 30-year eligibility criteria will be applicable from the date a building's redevelopment plan is put before the town planning department. ''The earlier cut off year of 1974 has been scrapped. The cap on FSI was creating a major hindrance in the process of their redevelopment, he said. At present, the old gaothan areas get an FSI of 1, on which 40% TDR is loaded and if the building is constructed before 1974 then the builder gets an incentive of 15% FSI, taking the total FSI to 1.55, sources said. Thane has nearly 1,061 buildings that are more than 30 years old. Of these, nearly 500 buildings have been constructed after 1974. Meanwhile, some civic officials feel the proposed higher FSI will only profit builders. ''Higher FSI means more constructions. More FSI does not translate into creating affordable housing. In fact, prices will be out of reach of the common man,'' a civic official said.

API suspended for dancing with bar girls in Thane Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | May 15, 2015, 01.59 AM IST THANE: An assistant police inspector from the Kashimira area has been put under suspension and a departmental inquiry is pending after a video clip of the officer dancing in a ladies bar went viral, embarrassing the police force. API Umesh Patil of Kashmira police station was captured on camera during a drunken revelry at Sea Hawk bar along Ghodbunder Road late in the night by one of the patrons present inside the bar. In the clip, Patil is seen dancing with a bar girl and also showering currency notes on one of them. Sources informed that the 48- second video clip was shot in the dance bar around 10 days back, which went viral via social media and reached Rajesh Pradhan, superintendent of police (Thane rural) earlier this week. Thane cops counsel, save 727 marriages since 2010 Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | May 15, 2015, 02.01 AM IST THANE: For the once-warring couples headed for a split, the Women's Complaints Redressal Cell (WCRC) of Thane police has turned out to be a platform for reconciliation having saved 727 marriages since 2010. The police have successfully resolved the wedge amongst the husband-wife squabbling through a number of counselling sessions along with the guidance to avert long litigation and court drama. According to statistics, the number of applications has soared in the last few years. In 2010, the applications were a whopping 505. However, the number went down to 227 in 2011 but picked up in 2013 with 470 and went on a five-year high to 699. The police said that differences between married couples are mainly due to interference by in-laws, ego, dowry, forceful marriage, cultural diversity and suspicion, which is the most common. "In most number of cases, couples seeking counselling are those who have had love marriages against their parents' wishes. The martial discord is basically due to ego problems and cultural differences, especially among the educated class," said a police officer. A senior police officer said that according to a government resolution warring couples have to be sent for counseling to the WCRC before registering a case under Section 498 (offences related to marriage) under the IPC. The volunteers here include psychologists who carry out long counseling sessisons, along with policemen, trying to convince the couples about the inconveniences related to filing divorce.

BSUP residents suffer health issues over drainage problem in Thane Freny Fernandes | TNN | May 15, 2015, 02.03 AM IST THANE: The leaking septic tank issue is not only raising a stink among residents of Tulsidham area, but is also a cause for concern for residents of the BSUP buildings. The drainage system of Dharamveer Nagar, which houses hundreds of people from poor financial background, has created a mess for residents as it has developed a crack and this leads to leakage. The 20-odd buildings were constructed under the BSUP project a few years ago. The dirty water leaking from the tank gets collected in an open ground adjacent to Surya Enclave. Residents have been facing this problem since the last five years. All complaints to the TMC have fallen on deaf ears. Residents residing in BSUP buildings have been silently suffering from vector borne diseases but haven't complained till now as they were afraid that the government will take away their homes. "Last monsoon, both my sons suffered from dengue. They usually play cricket in the open ground next to the drain. Because of the accumulated garbage there the area attracts a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Since we didn't have much money we had to take them to a civil hospital, where they took over a week to recover," said Namita Nadar, a 35-year-old resident. "We had a tough time, but we couldn't complain as the government had given us these homes." Many residents living in these BSUP buildings were unaware of the situation. They mistook it for a water body. "I thought the accumulated water was just another pond or a small lake. There are many homes and industries where waste water is directed to a nearby water body. I even tried fishing here once," said a shocked resident of Dharamveer Nagar.

Thane amaldars now officers of PSI rank May 15, 2015, 04:14 IST NASHIK: In a move that may probably provide new experience to people visiting police stations to lodge complaints, senior police officials have decided to do away with the constabulary deployed as station house officers (thane amaldars) and appoint officers of the rank of police sub inspector in their place. Senior police officials said that PSIs have already been appointed at some police stations in the city and soon, every station house officer at all the 11 police stations would be a police officer.Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 1) Avinash Bargal, said, "We had started with the Panchavati and Bhadrakali police station. It has yielded good results. As per the directions of the senior officials, PSIs will be the station house officers at all the police station." Officials said though experienced constables and police officers have same knowledge of law, crime and criminals, officers often have a different approach to every case. They are trained to give a patient ear to every complainant, can easily gauge the seriousness of the matter and immediately take necessary steps, which may not be the case with the constabulary. The 'thane amaldar' or station house officer is generally the first person visitors to police stations meet. The deployment of PSIs as 'thane amaldars' is likely to bring about the desired change at the police station level, said officials. In Nashik, there have been cases in the past when complaints were not taken seriously. In June 2013, the crime branch had to take up a special drive to clear applications that were pending with all the police stations for the past six-seven years. The police had then found that police stations across the city had accumulated 6,988 applications since 2007 without any action. In 2013, a 42-year-old woman had given an application to the Satpur police station mentioning that she was being stalked by an unidentified person. As the police failed to take cognizance of the application, she committed suicide a week later by hanging herself at her house on Satpur Ambad Link Road.

Read more Thane accepts one-year MCPS interim superintendent position It's official. Read more Nine out of 10 Missoula County Public Schools trustees present voted in favor of offering an interim superintendent contract worth $145,000 to Mark Thane.Several audience members spoke highly of Thane before the interview began at Sentinel High School on Wednesday evening."He is Missoula. He is MCPS," said Sheri Postma, president of MMCEO, the union which represents the district's classified workers."I hope that that's a reflection of the value that I place on relationships," Thane said about the supportive comments afterward.Thane currently serves as the human resources director for the district and is the only candidate who applied for the one-year, interim superintendent position that was posted internally earlier this month. The job became open when Superintendent Alex Apostle announced he was leaving MCPS for a job in Washington.Thane said his acceptance of the post will depend on the contract, but added he looks forward to the opportunities the position will present."I'm a glass half full kind of guy," he told trustees. The Missoula native is a product of MCPS and received undergraduate and graduate degrees of the University of Montana. His education career has spanned more than 30 years and he has held positions throughout the district as a teacher and administrator, as well as worked as principal at Target Range School District. If he takes the district's helm, his first priority will be establishing a working relationship with trustees, Thane said, adding the believes constructive dissent is beneficial to the decision making process but the board also must be efficient to take care of business.Another top priority is building community support and understanding of the proposed $88 million elementary district and $70 million high school district bond measures."It's well past time," he said about the need for updated buildings.Thane has experience with several building projects, including a bond measure at Target Range School District and an expansion project at C.S. Porter Middle School. He added he would reach out to feeder school districts, such as Hellgate Elementary and Target Range to engage them in the bond measure issues, as well as in the larger district.Currently, students from outlying districts participate in freshman orientation, but there are not many other avenues for them to learn more about or be engaged in MCPS."And I would like to see that change," Thane said.***During the interview, Thane also said that district tenets, such as the district's overarching goals, should be routinely reviewed to make sure they are being met and are relevant.Specialized programs, such as career academies, are important to engage students, Thane said."We need to engage students differently than we have in the past," he said. However, programs must be evaluated to make sure that they are meeting district goals and contributing to student achievement. Program implementation also must be evaluated, Thane said. After fixed costs and employee pay and benefits are covered, the district does not have many discretionary funds and so outside funding sources are important to help fund innovative programs, such as career academies, Thane said.Although the funding that the Shape P20 grant has provided for starting several programs – including the Spanish dual-language immersion program at Paxson Elementary School – is not guaranteed long-term, it has provided for materials and professional development, he said."None of that training goes away," he added. His guiding principle throughout his tenure as superintendent would be personal integrity and Thane said he wants to be able to hold his head high knowing he did his job to the best of his ability."The students who we serve are the children of my friends, neighbors," he said.***Board chairman Joseph Knapp Jr. cast the lone nay vote, saying the offer did not go far enough to support Thane and the difficult decisions he will have to make as superintendent. Rather, Knapp suggested the board consider offering Thane the interim contract with the explicit understanding that if Thane's performance over the coming school year is up to par that he would receive a longer-term contract."I just wanted to make a point," Knapp said about his vote, adding he has confidence in Thane's ability to competently fill the post.Looking outside of MCPS for a long-term superintendent when trustees already have a qualified, compassionate and passionate person for the job is a waste of resources, said Carleen Hathaway, secretary of MMCEO."The man is amazing," she said, adding he looks at problems as opportunities and does what's best for students."It has to be about the community and the students and the staff," she said.If Thane accepts the position, a formal contract will go before trustees for approval during their regular May meeting. 2015-05-13Mumbai likely to get new financial district along
Mumbai may get new financial district along Thane-Belapur road Last Modified: Thu, May 14 2015. 08 55 PM IST Mumbai: Threatened by the possibility of alternative financial centres emerging in states such as Gujaratthe immediate threat is the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT)the Maharashtra government is mapping out a plan to create a new financial district on the outskirts of Mumbai. The new International Business and Finance Centre is seen as the next Bandra-Kurla Complex of Mumbai, and is being planned along the Thane-Belapur road, where a large number of defunct industrial units are currently based. The idea is to use that land to create a new hub to attract financial and technology firms. The plan is part of the states new housing policy, a draft of which has been circulated among legislators. Mint has reviewed a copy of the draft policy. Mumbais competitive advantage of being the financial capital of India is under challenge from many cities. It is therefore necessary that all steps be taken to maintain Mumbais competitive advantage as the financial capital of India by looking and planning ahead, the document says. GIFT, near Ahmedabad, will house the countrys first international financial services centre, an enclave modelled on Hong Kong, with rules similar to those of offshore financial centres. The GIFT project has been criticized by political parties in Maharashtraincluding Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally Shiv Senathat say such cities will reduce the importance of Mumbai as the financial capital of the country. In response, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, of the ruling BJP, has said his government will consider an international financial services centre in Mumbai. It isnt clear whether the proposed new development will be pitched as an international financial services centre. What is clear is its necessity. The Bandra-Kurla complex was built on marshy lands along the Mithi river in the early 1990s and firms, starting with ICICI Bank Ltd, starting moving in from 1999. It created an alternative to the then financial hub of the city, Nariman Point. Now there is hardly any space in the area and only 35 of its 370 hectares are undeveloped. Explaining the choice of the Thane-Belapur road, the draft policy says that manufacturing activity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is no longer competitive when compared with other parts of the state. The area, spread across 27 sq.km., was developed in the 1960s and 1970s to move polluting industries out of Mumbai. The industrial estate was at its peak in the 1980s, when it had more than 3,000 units and housed 100,000 workers. Now many of these units are defunct. Reliance Industries Ltd and Reliance Communications Ltd have already set up their back offices in the area by taking over premises of chemical companies NOCIL Ltd and ICI Ltd respectively. A senior state government official, who did not wanted to be named, said that the area has all the advantages the Bandra-Kurla complex did. A major part of the Bandra-Kurla complexs attraction was connectivity. The Thane-Belapur area offers similar advantages. With work on the Navi Mumbai Airport going ahead, air connectivity is not going to be an issue for senior executives of big national and international firms. The area is also on the suburban railway network, he added. As a way to attract firms, the state will permit the conversion of the industrial zone into commercial and residential zones and put in place integrated development regulations similar to those applicable to Bandra-Kurla complex within six months of the draft housing policy being finalized. Operating industrial units will also be encouraged to shift to other parts of the state over period of next five years. Existing lease holders will be allowed to use 50% of land for construction of affordable houses and the rest can be used for commercial activity, said the draft, adding that additional floor space index (FSI) of three, compared with the standard FSI of one, will be permitted. FSI dictates the amount of construction allowed on any plot of land. Some analysts are sceptical about parts of the plan. The state government may able to attract IT (information technology) and IT-enabled services companies as the work force for these companies largely lives in Navi Mumbai and Thane but I am not so sure about it attracting many financial services companies, said Anuj Puri, chairman of property consultancy JLL India. An earlier plan to develop Wadala and adjoining eastern suburbs as the new financial district is a more workable proposition, Puri added. Ashish Vaidya, executive director and head of trading, treasury and markets, at DBS Bank Ltd, who has been a banker in the city for more than two decades, says that the success of an alternative financial district would depend on how well the infrastructure around it is planned. In that sense the Bandra-Kurla complexs development was also due to chance. True, there was land available and infrastructure like roads were made but it also coincided with the rising rentals in Nariman Point, Vaidya said. To build an international finance centre the government should look beyond just tax incentives, because these incentives are just short-term. We need infrastructure more than anything else, which means better roads, electricity, and proper transport facilities.

H1N1 kills 25-year-old from Thane Sumitra Deb Roy | TNN | May 12, 2015, 09.52 PM IST MUMBAI: After a lull of nearly a month, the H1N1 virus claimed a 25-year-old woman from Thane, making it the 43rd death to be reported in a city hospital. She died at the BMC-run Kasturba Hospital, where she was diagnosed with the infection and was undergoing treatment for the past couple of days. Executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar confirmed the death. She said that the patient was being treated at a private hospital in Thane. "The patient was shifted to Kasturba Hospital after her condition did not improve. She passed away late on Monday evening after developing severe breathing difficulty," she added. The death however will not be added to the city's death toll as the deceased was a resident of Thane. The virus made a serious comeback this year claiming nearly 500 lives across the state. Around 50 people died in Mumbai hospitals of which several had come from outside for treatment. The virus had infected over 5100 people in a span of just three months between January to March. Keskar however added that it was a one-off case. "We are not seeing any cases now," she said. According to police sources, Dhodade slit Jagtap's throat on Wednesday as she refused his marriage proposal and married a man from Kalyan on April 28. Preliminary interrogation revealed that Dhodade first met Jagtap in Lokmanya Nagar, Thane, when she would visit her friend. The two became good friends and would talk regularly until Dhodade started coaxing her to marry him. Dhodade admitted that he stalked Jagtap's residence in Kisan Nagar in Thane every day waiting for her to return to her maternal home after her marriage. AD Kshirsagar, senior police inspector, Wagle estate police station, said: "On May 5, the couple returned to her home as she had to appear for some exams. The accused, aged 24, was produced in the magistrate court and has been remanded in police custody till May 18. Priyanka Jagtap, who was believed to have been in a relationship with Dodhade for two years, was killed in broad daylight on Wednesday by her lover, who had come armed with a kitchen knife and stabbed her to death following an argument. 2015-05-09Parts of Thane reel under 7-hr power cut - Times o
Parts of Thane reel under 7-hr power cut B B Nayak | TNN | May 9, 2015, 05.47 AM IST THANE: Unscheduled power cut has become the order of the day and that even at any given time and day. But the service provider is least bothered of the hardship consumers go through during a sultry hottest day in peak summer. And the residents remain clueless over the whole agony they have to encounter every other day despite paying exorbitant electricity bills sans delays and in this case they are at the receiving end of meter disconnection. This attitude on the part of the state owned power provider enraged residents. Residents of Wagle Estate, Waghvil, Kapurbawadi, Manpada, Majiwada and Ghodbundar area had to spend long hours without power as unscheduled power cut left them high and dray during the rising mercury level . MSEDCL says pre-monsoon maintenance has attributed to the outage. But angry residents disagree to buy MSEDCL's theory terming that the outage should have been announced. In fact, MSEDCL failed to make any announcement a day before such outage if any. It was black Friday yet again and Thaneites had to endure day-long blackout due to power outage from as early as 10am to 5pm. Consumers alleged that power provider did not intimate this before switching off lights. When asked an MSEDCL officials said, "The outage was taken for maintenance as pre-monsoon preparedness. Due to its urgency we could not announce it before unlike previously." "This was unjust and irresponsible act on the part of MSEDCL officials to enforce load shedding when electricity was required most during the hot and humid day," said Waghvil resident Manisha Lade. With the outage, resentment was brewing up among the residents who were running from pillar to post to have some relief from unwanted plight, but to no avail. Many residents called up the helpline and local MSEDCL offices but found the responses quite peculiar. "The respondent at the other end expressed inability to tell us what had happened due to which the power went off for 6-7 hours. We were told light would be restored soon but that never happened till 5pm," said Manpada resident Suraj Dudhani. With rising mercury level consumers were left in the lurch all through the day. It was harrowing time for kids and elderly people due to power failure, leading to non-function of lifts in high rise buildings. "We felt extreme suffocation while climbing up the stair cases," said a senior citizen Mahesh Zende.

Thane collector gets contempt of court notice MUMBAI Updated: May 09, 2015 22:46 IST The Bombay high court has issued a contempt of court notice to Thane district collector Ashwini Joshi, for failing to take steps to protect mangroves despite specific orders from the court. Acting on a petition filed by locals about the destruction of mangroves and unauthorised construction on wetlands at Agasan village in Thane, in January, the high court had directed the collector to take steps to protect the mangroves in the area. On Tuesday, the division bench of justice Abhay Oka and justice CV Bhadang was irked to note that no such steps were taken by the collector. We find that the district collector of Thane has committed a deliberate breach of the aforesaid orders of this court, the judges said and issued the notice to Joshi. Taking stern note of the rampant destruction of mangroves and construction of illegal structures, the court had, in December 2014, directed the Thane Municipal Corporation to demolish illegal chawls constructed on the land. The court has posted the matter for further hearing on June 17.

Rahul Gandhi appears in Thane court in RSS defamation case INDIA Updated: May 09, 2015 00:47 IST Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi appeared at a Bhiwandi court on Friday in connection with a defamation case filed by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist. The case was filed by Rajesh Kunte, who objected to his allegation at an election rally in March 6 last year that RSS was responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Though the Supreme Court has stayed the proceedings against him, Rahul appeared before magistrate DP Kale in Bhiwandi. The next hearing is on September 30. The Congress leader, who was in court for 13 minutes, appeared after it issued an ultimatum on the lapse of three dates to appear in court. He later told reporters that he came to honour the commitment given to the court. "We respect the judiciary that is why I am here. I made a commitment to the court. I am here to fulfil that commitment. I fulfill whatever commitments I make, Rahul said, adding, The fight that Gandhiji fought is our fight. We will win this. It was a rare appearance of a Gandhi family member in court. Rahul is probably the only Gandhi besides his grandmother, the late Indira Gandhi, to appear before a court. The Congress leader had moved the Supreme Court, seeking a stay on the Bombay high court order dismissing his plea for quashing the defamation case filed against him for allegedly blaming the RSS for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Tagging Rahul's petition with that of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwals cases already pending with the court, the court said it would only examine the validity of the provisions that permitted initiation of criminal defamation and not go into the merit of the case. Rahul arrived in Mumbai on Friday on way to Bengaluru and drove to Bhiwandi. Several groups of Congress workers had gathered outside the court. Narayan Iyer, Rahuls advocate, said, During the last hearing, I had given a written assurance on behalf of my client to the court that he will attend next hearing. May 8 was the last day of third hearing. Due to his busy schedule, could not attend the previous hearings. The next hearing is scheduled on September 30. Next hearing at the Supreme Court will be on July 8. If the court gives a favorable order, there will be no need for Rahul Gandhi to attend the next hearing here, he added.

Thane-CST railway section to shift from DC to AC current Manthan K Mehta | TNN | May 8, 2015, 04.03 AM IST MUMBAI: The Central Railway may switch from 1500 V Direct Current (DC) to 25KV Alternating Current (AC) between CST and Thane by May 24. This is the only section on Indian Railways which runs on DC current. CR's general manager S K Sood said, "We are working to undertake the switch from DC to AC during the May 23-24 weekend." CR successfully undertook test charging of the AC power in December 2014. A part of the railway networkfrom LTT-Thane till Kalyan and beyondhas already been converted from DC to AC. A senior official said, "Till now, we run two types of rakes as trains between Thane and CST still operate on the DC system." The CR runs 10 services with DC rakes between CST and Thane. Most of these rakes have outlived their lives. A senior official said, "These rakes are risky to run as they are prone to mishaps. We have to switch to AC section to run better rakes." The commissioner of railway safety has granted his approval but the chief commissioner of railway safety has put the ball in the railway's court on whether or not to go ahead with the conversion. There are apprehensions that the lower height of the British-era bridges can pose safety challenges. However, CR plans to apply the insulation paint beneath bridge and catenary wire to prevent mishaps due to short-circuit.

The police said Thombre used to deploy agents or 'messengers' who used to scout for targets. These messengers used to fan out around the city looking for families that are either poor or had fallen on bad times. His idea was that these desperate people would go to any length to get their lives back on track. The police said his messengers are usually women. Once his people zeroed in on a family, they would tell lofty stories of Thombre and how he has been serving society for over 18 years with his magical powers. They would also set up fake familes and introduce them to the targets. These fake families will narrate how they sought had benefited from the 'baba' intervention. The Thane Crime Branch's Child Protection unit got a tip-off about Thombre three months ago. They managed to track one of his accomplices, but could not arrest as he got away just as they were organising a raid. Three weeks ago, they got a tipoff about Thombre's location. This time, they were determined not to miss him and roped in an NGO -- International Justice Mission -- that works with the Child Protection Unit. Joint Commissioner Laxmi Narayan put his top team on the job. They also roped in a dummy devotee, a police informant. This 'client', who pretended to be a businessman who had run in huge losses in recent times, got an appointment at Thombre's Dombivali flat on Thursday. As he went in, the police lay in wait outside the building. Thombre told the 'client'that only offering a minor girl's virginity will save him. He said the spirit of a higher power will possess him and have sexual intercourse with the girl. The pervert added that the more he has intercourse with the girl, the more her parents or relatives -- whoever in trouble -- will prosper. Around this time, the police informant noticed that a girl, who looked to be around 15 years, was in the flat and was crying. In front of the informant, the baba started forcing the girl to submit herself to him. As she refused, he threatened that bad things will happen to her family as he had such powers. He dragged her to a room and shut the door. The informant immediately signalled the waiting police team who broke into the flat and caught Thombre red-handed and rescued the girl. Her parents have gone missing. The police said they will search and arrest them also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offfences Act. Thombre has been booked under this as well the state's antisuperstition law. The police have also arrested Janki Hindale, Thombre's main aide who roped in unsuspecting families. During her interrogation, she told the police that Thombre has raped 22 girls so far. Inspector Madan Ballard of the Crime Branch said, "The accused has been booked under the POCSO Act and the anti-black magic Act. The girl will be handed over to Child Welfare Commission. Investigations are on. We will trace her parents." Sanjay Makwan, Field Director, IJM, said: "For three weeks, we were trying to trace the baba. He has exploited many minor girls, and we managed to rescue one. It was an initiative taken by Jt Cp of Thane and with combine efforts we could get him today."

Thane's Kopri bridge caught between railways-PWD tussle Wednesday, 06 May 2015 - 7:09pm IST | Rupali Shinde | Edited by: Vinaya Patil The much-awaited widening of the Kopri rail over-bridge has reached a standstill as the fight between the railways and the state Public Works Department (PWD) continues. Even after getting a nod from the railway authorities for widening of the bridge, no work has been undertaken here. The project cost has thus escalated to Rs 90 crore from the initial Rs 9 crore sanctioned in 2003. In 2003, the state PWD had sent a design for the widening of the bridge to the central railway authorities but the design was not approved up to 2013. This was revealed after RTI activist Nilesh Ambekar received a reply in November 2013 to the application he had filed in this regard. Ambekar along with another activist, Satyajit Shah, had then undertaken a signature campaign with support from MLA Sanjay Kelkar to further this issue. They got a total of 1,779 signatures which were sent to the state PWD through MLA Kelkar on November 27, 2013. Tax payers will ultimately have to face the brunt of the additional cost, activist Shah said. I have met CM Devendra Fadanvis regarding this and have suggested that certain work be given to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Department Authority (MMRDA) for the bridge widening and it should be expedited at the earliest, he said. Motorists taking the six-lane Kapurbawdi flyover have to further take the two-lane Kopri bridge. This results in a traffic bottleneck in the region. The problem is likely to deepen once the last arm of the Kapurbawdi flyover going to Mumbai is thrown open for the public next month.

HC raps Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai civic bodies over pothole menace MUMBAI Updated: May 05, 2015 20:42 IST The Bombay high court (HC) on Tuesday asked the civic bodies of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to come up with a mechanism to fix the pothole menace on arterial roads by Thursday. The division bench of justice AS Oka and justice CV Badang also asked the municipal corporations to study the suggestions that the court had earlier proposed to fix the problem. The bench was hearing a suo motu public interest litigation regarding the roads in and around Mumbai. It has included several other petitions about the bad condition of Eastern and Western Express Highways. The court observed that the municipal corporations have failed to fill the potholes formed on arterial roads owing to incessant digging. What is the mechanism to monitor the state of the roads? You can't deny that your roads are riddled with potholes. Besides, who is responsible for the incessant digging all across the city? And who is supposed to fill them up? asked the judges. The court has also sought to know how road works contracts are awarded by the civic bodies. In February, interveners Ruju Thakker and Kamal Khata had submitted suggestions to the court to resolve the issue. The civic bodies were supposed to take these into account and come up with a mechanism by Tuesday. However, the corporations told the court that they had received no instructions. The HC had asked the civic bodies to provide a three-level approach for grievance redressal for potholes, under which complaints can be lodged through their website, helpline number or through SMS. On July 24, 2013, sitting Bombay HC judge justice Gautam Patel had written a letter to the then chief justice, highlighting the pothole menace. This letter was later converted into a PIL.

Girl molested thrice during Andheri-Thane rail commute Nitasha Natu | TNN | May 5, 2015, 03.02 AM IST MUMBAI: A 16-year-old girl from Thane, who has rarely travelled by train, ended up traumatized after being sexually harassed thrice during her journey home from Andheri station recently. The girl, on Sunday, wrote a detailed email to the GRP commissioner, narrating her ordeal, and demanding that stringent measures be taken for the safety of women commuters. On April 27, the girl, along with two of her friends, decided to go to Bandra for shopping. They later headed for the beach. Around 7.15 pm, they stepped into Andheri station to head home to Thane. "I was walking towards the escalator of Andheri station when I noticed a man stealing a glance at me. He was waiting at a fruit salad stall. As I passed by, he suddenly crossed his arms behind his back with his fingers outstretched. I tried to slide away but he still touched me inappropriately," the girl told TOI. Shaken, the girl reached a platform and was waiting for an Up local with her friends. "A fast local passed by with groups of men hanging out of packed general compartments. They were clinging to each other and looked as if they could fall out. But someone in the crowd whistled and passed a lewd remark while another male commuter tried to blow a kiss," she said. The girl and her friends, new to commuting, reached Dadar station around 9.15pm as they mixed up local trains. They started making inquiries with co-passengers as to how to travel further to Thane. "I suddenly felt a man brushing against my back. He was doing it repeatedly under the pretext of pacing up and down the platform. I was tired and desperate to reach home and just moved away," she said. The girl reached Thane around 10.15pm. "Throughout, I was struggling with men making me feel extremely uncomfortable. I had worn a regular knee-length dress. The only thing that was humiliating, other than sexual harassment, was not raising my voice against it," she said. As her family isn't in the know, the girl said she was hesitant to lodge a formal complaint. But she decided to write to the railway police chief so that other commuters would not have to face the same ordeal. Officials said the GRP's all-female Nirbhaya squad and the Railway Protection Force's Shakti squads on CR have been assigned the responsibility of flushing out molesters, pickpockets and thieves from ladies compartments and on platforms. Last year, 55 women commuters were molested on the railways in separate instances. The railway police made arrests in 48 of the cases. In all, there were 73 instances of crime against women commuters last year on the railways.

He also declared that 10,000 LED lights will be put up as street lights. Sanjay Vadhavkar, the general secretary of Thanes Hind Majdoor Sabha and a resident of the society, planned the free energy audit in co-ordination with the society members. MISSOULIAN EDITORIAL: Thane great pick for interim superintendent May 1, 2015 Huckleberries to Mark Thane and the Missoula County Public Schools trustees, who voted this week to offer him the interim superintendent contract. Thane has worked in education for more than three decades and in that time has held a variety of positions with MCPS; currently he is the district's human resources director. Although Thane was the only candidate to apply for the $145,000 contract, he's clearly qualified, deeply knowledgeable of the district's current demands, and overall an excellent pick to guide MCPS through the challenging months ahead. Huckleberries to the two-day Asia-Montana energy Summit, which took place in Missoula this past week. The summit, hosted by the University of Montana's Mansfield Library, brought energy experts from five different countries to learn about and discus all things related to energy and was the largest event of its kind in Missoula history. Huckleberries to Historic Preservation Month in Missoula! To kick off a month of preservation celebration, tonight the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission will hand out nine awards at its annual banquet in recognition of significant preservation efforts. The free event starts at 6 p.m. in the Governors Ballroom of the Historic Florence Building at 111 N. The program already helps more than 1,000 small businesses pay for insurance for some 6,600 employees. State Auditor Monica Lindeen made a convincing argument that a $20 million expansion would have allowed even more Montana businesses with two to nine employees to afford health insurance at a per-person cost lower than either Medicaid or federal marketplace subsidies. Huckleberries to Governor Bullock for signing a bill last week that updates Montana's bicycle laws. House Bill 280, introduced by Billings Republican Rep. Jeff Essmann, makes a number of long overdue changes to traffic rules and requirements, such as allowing vehicles to lawfully cross a yellow line in order to pass a bicyclist. Other changes included no longer requiring bicyclists to ride "as far to the right as practicable," and allowing bicyclists to wear reflective clothing at night instead of requiring mounted reflectors.

Maharashtra Day provides stark reminder of Thane's waning industrial sheen Nitin Yeshwantrao | TNN | May 1, 2015, 12.29 PM IST THANE: Prasad Shinde was born and grew up in Thane, a city with a distinct character and culture, where the hooting of sirens of the industrial units around his home was an indication of time. Today, he feels out of place in the same neighbourhood which has transformed from an industrial hub into a crowded city with high-rises, malls and swanky cars. Thane was once the manufacturing backbone of Maharashtra, with giant multinational firms, including United Engineering, Altech polymers, Colour Chem, Voltas, Kores, to name a few, having bases here. The Trans Thane Creek (TTC) stated to be nation's biggest industrial township, is now a site of abandoned factories riddled with broken windows and cluster of illegally-built chawls and slums. Most of the industrial land has been converted to accommodate the great Indian middle class who migrated from Mumbai where realty prices touched the sky. The city of employment is now a dormitory town for the lakhs of families working in Mumbai, coming home only to sleep. "In the last 20 years, more than 100 heavy industries have shut down rendering over 20,000 people jobless. Of this, only 6,018 people got their dues of Rs 88 crore, while the remaining 14,000 are still fighting in labour and industrial courts,'' a labour official said. Shinde said the new Thane of today is a different city and has nothing in common with the old Thane, including the culture, people, education, income and outlook. Shift of the heavy industries outside Maharashtra and the escalating realty costs resulted in the closure of more than 100 industries spread over 2 lakh square metres here in the lake city in the last close to two decades, according to information by the state industries department. Much of the manufacturing work has shifted base outside Maharashtra or simply preferred to close down, stating that it was financially unfeasible to run the mammoth industry with a huge labour force. More recently, Raymond Ltd, Piramal Health Care at Kolshet and Hindalco at Kalwa shut shop after over 50 years of doing business in Thane. Though the small scale sector and the service industry seem to have replaced the heavy and manufacturing sector, the quality of employment has taken a serious beating. The IT parks and BPO industry have replaced the heavy machinery and chemical plants. In fact, statistics compiled by the industries department indicate that though there has been a slight increase in the industrial set-up in the district, the total investments in plant and machinery has fallen drastically, indicting that the joblessness chart could be on the upswing.

Milk boycott in Thane ends Shares 9 PADMJA SINHA | Sat, 2 May 2015-05:30am , DNA The boycott of five major milk brands Amul, Warna, Mother Dairy, Gokul and Mahananda has come to an end. These brands will be readily available at all retailers and vendors across Thane from May 2. Thane City Milk Business Welfare Association (TCMBWA) has come to an understanding with the companies concerned and agreed to call off the boycott. The association's joint secretary PD Chodnekar confirmed: "Representatives from all five brands have spoken to me over phone and asked for 15 days to sort out the matter. They have assured me that they would increase our commission and if they fail to do so, then we are free to take steps." TCMBWA's boycott, which started on April 22 in Thane, was in demand for more commission for the vendors. The boycott had spread to Diva, Mumbra, Dombivli, New Mumbai and even Mumbai. According to Chodnekar, the company representatives have assured that the commission would be hiked by 5-6%. "Hence, we have called off the boycott and normal supply of all brands will be restored." Thanekars have had a tough time managing without their favourite milk brands all these days. Shrishti Das, a Thane resident, said: "It's a good news. All these days I have craved for my brand." Sudhir Jorwekar, inspector in the weights and measures department in Konkan Bhawan, said. "The end of boycott has got nothing to do with overcharging by the vendors and retailers. We would take action against those who are overcharging. We have been encouraging people to complaint about the culprits."
