Extend Metro route till Dahisar: Sena Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 30, 2014, 12.00 AM IST THANE: The Shiv Sena wants the Wadala-Thane metro to be extended till Dahisar. In addition, the Sena also wants the entire 32-km project to be built underground, as opposed to the plan of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to have a 5-km elevated track from Manpada to Ovala (car shed). In a meeting with the MMRDA officials last week, senior Sena leader Eknath Shinde suggested that instead of ending the metro at Kasarvadavli on Ghodbunder Road, the authority should extend it till Dahisar so that it caters to commuters travelling from Mumbai to Thane and vice versa. Keeping in mind the population growth in the city and the increasing number of people commuting between Thane and Mumbai on the Godhbunder Road daily, the Sena leaders felt this would be a viable option. Also, as the traffic volume on the route has increased, it has resulted in slow moving vehicles at several stretches. "Many people commute to Thane from Mumbai and vice versa. So, if the Wadala-Thane metro is extended to Dahisar, instead of making Kasarvadavli the last station, it would benefit many people," Shinde said. Appreciating Shinde's suggestion, U P S Madan, the metropolitan commissioner, and Sanjay Sethi, the joint commissioner of MMRDA, said that the authority may look at the feasibility of extend the connectivity in future. "At present, the MMRDA will have to go ahead with the current plan. However, in future the administration will consider the feasibility of extending the Metro till Dahisar," said Madan. Rail India Technical and Economic Services (Rites) has prepared a detailed survey of the 32-km Wadala-Thane metro project. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 22,000 crore and will have 29 stations, of which 11 will be in the Thane region.During the meeting, saffron leader from the region, Pratap Sarnaik, also urged the MMRDA to consider making the entire project underground instead of having 5 kms of elevated tracks from Manpada to Ovala. "The movement of traffic is very high on Ghodbunder road. If MMRDA goes ahead with elevated plan, than it will create hurdles for the administration if it wants to build a flyover in the locality in future," Sarnaik said. However, MMRDA officials stated that they have no issue in having the underground transport network, but then the project cost would escalate a lot. "Once the Metro services are rolled out, the traffic density on this route might ease," one of the MMRDA officials told Sarnaik.

Series of infra projects in Thane get MMRDA nod Nitin Yeshwantrao | TNN | Jun 29, 2014, 02.24 AM IST Thane: Transport woes of the denizens from Thane-Kalyan promises to ease in the near future with the MMRDA recently giving its green signal for a series of infrastructure projects including the road connectivity between Thane-Kalyan parallel to the railway tracks. The administrative approval was granted by the planning body to the Dombivli-Mankoli road on the Mumbai-Nasik highway to help locals to cut short their travel time. Plans are to construct a 3.2-km cable suspension bridge linking Mankoli junction to Dombivli, cutting commute time between Thane and Dombivli to less than half-an-hour.The Rs 200-crore elevated link to be built on concrete stilts, with one-third portion of the proposed bridge installed on the Thane creek and the other end along the vast stretch of barren land culminating at the Mumbai-Nasik highway. The CM approved the project, to be funded wholly by the MMRDA, after consistent follow up by rebel the Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and MP Dr Shrikant Shinde. "This linkway will help turnaround the entire region. People in Dombilvi have to take a 20-km circuitous route via Kalyan and Bhiwandi to be able to reach Thane. It's a waste of resource and consumes precious time. The new link will reach them on the highway in 20 minutes and they can reach Thane in another 10 minutes,'' Dr Shinde told TOI. The planning body at its meeting chaired by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan also cleared the proposal for constructing a road parallel to the tracks between Thane and Kalyan. "Presently, train is the only lifeline for people staying in the distant suburbs. However, there is a need to have an alternative transport system as it would reduce the load on the railways. The incidents of commuters deaths due to falling off crowded trains are increasing and these lives can be saved by having an alternative transport mode running parallel to the railways,'' Dr Shinde said.

Suicide attempt: When media insider cries foul, why does media fall silent? Written by: Reetu Sharma Updated: Friday, June 27, 2014, 18:06 An India TV anchor, Tanu Sharma, attempted suicide on June 22 just outside her office premises in Noida. The journalist who is said to be out of danger now, took the drastic step allegedly because of harassment from two senior colleagues. Before the suicide attempt, she wrote a note on social networking site Facebook blaming two of her seniors for mental harassment and conspiracy. As the TV presenter is recovering from the trauma, her plight has very conveniently and silently swept under the carpet by the media itself. There are two versions to this story--one given by the Journalist herself and the other by the News channel. If the version given by journalist is true then what happened is very unfortunate. However, what is more dismal is the media's coverage of the issue. The media largely ignored it and those who covered it gave a very limited coverage to the issue. A famous actress charging Ness Wadia with molestation is a sensational story, while a suicide attempt by a TV journalist is not important. The alacrity with which the media acted in reporting the Tejpal case and the so called Preity-Ness mess case was nowhere to be seen in this case. While the Tejpal and Preity Zinta's cases made it to the front page and primetime news slot for at least a week, Tanu's suicide attempt case was relegated to the back pages of newspapers and was soon forgotten. The news reports did go beyond quoting from Tanu's Facebook note, which she wrote before attempting suicide. But in the aforementioned cases, the brouhaha over the cases did not seem to have faded a bit even after weeks. Why is media silent Why is the media silent on this case then? Is it because this case points a finger towards media itself and no one wants to question the fourth pillar? If it were a luminary in place of the journalist, would the media have reported it in the same way?Or is it that the media is wary and not comfortable when it comes to reporting on itself? Or is it that this case is not news worthy? Well, silence by the media on the issue has raised questions on the traditions of the media industry? As told to newslaundry here are both the victim's and the channels version of the story. The victim's version of the story: Tanu, who was a news anchor with India TV till last week said that she took the daily harrasment she had to go through in the channel as a part of the newsroom politics, and let it go. But on June 22, it reached the peak point and thus, attempted to commit suicide by consuming rat poison in the India TV premises in Noida Sector 85. Tanu was quoted as saying in newslaundary, "I joined India TV in February this year (2014) and things started to turn sour within a month." Tanu reported to Senior Executive Editor, Anita Sharma on a daily basis, although her immediate superior and head of department (HoD) was Senior Executive Editor, MN Prasad. According to Tanu, "Sharma repeatedly humiliated her in front of her colleagues and belittled her on every occasion. She'd find faults with everything, from the way I looked, to the clothes I wore, to my hairstyle. I was told I'm not glamorous enough and that I didn't know how to carry myself." She further said, "Anita Sharma would constantly criticise my voice and say it's too harsh but no one in the newsroom complained. In fact, I routinely gave voiceovers for special features - why would they let me do so if my voice was so bad?" Tanu also said that within a few days of joining the channel, Sharma said that she would like to send her somewhere out to meet people. She said, "I asked whether it was for an interview or a byte but she never responded clearly. She kept telling me that she would like to send me out for some other reasons and once, when I insisted, stated that I could earn extra money if I agreed." "I used to cry every day and broke down finally. As a final resort I messaged MN Prasad simply saying that ‘I am resigning'." Tanu also said, "Prasad said he'd discuss the issue, but he made no effort to call her or hear her out. While standard procedure across organisations need an employee to submit a formal resignation letter, but Prasad treated my one-line SMS as a formal resignation and asked me to leave without giving me a notice period or taking an exit interview. This is rather surprising considering the contract does not allow the employee to terminate his/her services." "The HR acted more or less like a puppet in the hands of the management and I was told to leave", she says. Dejected with the way she was treated Tanu attempted suicide. The Channel's version of the story: Tanu Sharma had joined in February 2014. She was still on probation as her three month probation period had been extended since in her first three months she had made two serious mistakes on air. First time, she was laughing on air during live news while presenting serious news. She had been warned. Second mistake she made was that while she was on studio duty she left the studio and newsroom, putting her phone on silent was sitting in the cafetaria. Due to non-availability of anchor, the channel had to give breaking news without an anchor on just graphics. She was given a second warning by HR. Complaints regarding her behavior were reported regularly. The last incident was a minor reprove by her senior in the girls make up room in the presence of two other female anchors, after which she sent a message that she is resigning. It was confirmed with her by her immediate senior and then forwarded to HR. HR sent her a mail and informed her that her resignation had been accepted and she should come and meet them for the relieving formalities. She came and met them, handed over her I-card, collected her belongings from the make up room and left saying good bye to her colleagues. And the matter was amicably closed. During her service she never made any complaint of harassment or even shared it with any colleague. India TV was amongst the first few channels to have instituted a complaint redressal committee for women employees which is headed by a Supreme Court lawyer, if she actually had any issues she could have approached the committee. The two people she is blaming are very senior and highly respected professionals in the industry. The lady she is blaming has trained hundreds of young producers and anchors and is respected and appreciated very much. She is herself a mother of two girls, these false allegations have caused a lot of harassment to her and her family. Although the outcome of the case is not known but this case has definitely created a crack in the wall surrounding Indian media through which the world outside can now see parts of its dark underbelly. The fact that this involved a journalist and a media house should not in any way deter us from reporting the facts.

‘Navi Mumbai, Thane LEAD nation IN home PRICE RISE’ By: Express News Service | Mumbai | Published:June 28, 2014 1:12 am A five-year price analysis of residential realty market across 11 cities shows that the ever-expanding Navi Mumbai and Thane residential markets have registered the highest percentage of home price increase in the country followed by Mumbai. According to the report released on Friday by the Confederation of Indian Industry and JLL India, both these locations on the outskirts of Mumbai have recorded a 80-85 per cent average price rise between April-June 2009 and January-March 2014. In the same period Mumbai has shown a 75-80 per cent average price increase. The lowest increase has been in Hyderabad (25 per cent), Noida & Greater Noida (25 to 30 per cent) and Delhi NCR (30 per cent). “The main reason for the percentage increase in Navi Mumbai and Thane prices is because to begin with the prices in these locations were very affordable. As connectivity to Mumbai improved over the years and a lot of developers launched quality project in these locations, the residential real estate demand too increased greatly resulting in an hike in prices,” said Anuj Puri, chairman and country head, JLL India. He added that in comparison, markets in the Delhi-NCR belt such as Noida and Greater Noida, which have shown slower rate of growth in prices, always had good connectivity. The report further states that with the Reserve Bank of India not expected to decrease interest rates in the short to medium term, residential sales are likely to remain low. Despite the increase in prices, data shows that absorption of residential property is presently at a five year low of just of 10 per cent of the inventory. The low sales volumes in the residential market would mean more project launches in the high-sale volume “affordable segment”, wherein developers usually launch modest-sized homes in the most peripheral areas of Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

NCP hopes to wrest Thane, Ovala assembly seats from Congress Nitin Yeshwantrao | Jun 27, 2014, 01.38 PM IST THANE: The NCP is determined to make an aggressive pitch to wrest the two assembly seats of Thane and Ovala-Majiwada from the Congress as part of its strategy to increase its state-wide seat share by at least 30 for the October assembly polls. The Sharad Pawar-led party which is at cross-roads with the Congress, blaming them for the recent rout in the Lok Sabha polls, is understood to be seeking an equitable distribution of the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra. Party strategists are convinced that the party should field its nominee in 143 assembly segments as against the 113 seats it contested in the 2009 assembly polls. ''The mood of voters was against the Congress during the LS polls. As an ally, we had to suffer the voters' anger due to our long association with them in the Centre and state. However, in the October assembly elections, we will insist on a fair distribution of seats. If we contest in more number of seats, we can expect to increase our tally in the legislature,'' said a party insider. In the 2009 state assembly polls, the NCP contested 113 seats and won 62, while Congress won 82 seats out of the 170 it had contested. In 2004, NCP contested for 124 seats and won 71, while the big brother Congress contested for 157 seats and won 69. The seat-sharing arrangement in the 2014 assembly polls could be completely different, insiders said. In fact, NCP guardian minister and ministers assigned the task of coordination of districts have already started preparing a detailed report on the party's position in the districts.been tasked to prepare a detailed report on the party position in the district about the assembly seats that it would like to snatch away from the Congress. In the lake city, out of the four assembly seats — Thane, Kopri-Panchpakhadi, Ovala-Majiwada and Kalwa-Mumbra — the NCP is eager to field its nominees from Thane city and Ovala-Majiwada segment, which were contested by the Congress in the 2004 and 2009 assembly polls. The Kalwa- Mumbra constituency is represented by NCP leader and medical education minister Jitendra Awhad. Senior party functionaries said they will not give in to the earlier seat-sharing formula of 170 seats for the Congress and 113 seats for the NCP at any costs. ''In a worst-case scenario, it will lead to severing ties with the Congress. But in that case, we will contest all the 288 assembly seats on our own. We are prepared for this. At least we would be able to charge up the party cadre at the ground level,'' he said. The NCP is also upset with the Congress for actively working to defeat its Lok Sabha nominees in the recent elections. In Thane and Kalyan Lok Sabha constituencies, one of the reasons for the bitter defeat of the sitting NCP nominees Sanjeev Naik and Anand Paranjpe was because of Congress functionaries and workers distancing from them. Elsewhere in the state NCP leaders were trounced after local Congress functionaries deliberately avoided canvassing and campaigning for them. Upset at the 'deception' by %its ally, the NCP functionaries are in a belligerent mood and want to reciprocate the same way during the assembly polls.

Thane gets step-motherly treatment: Sena Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 26, 2014, 02.49 AM IST Thane: The delay in completion of the Kapurbawdi flyover is the latest to trigger a war of words between the Shiv Sena and the DF government in Thane district, with the former accusing the state leadership of neglecting Thane. Sena leader and MLA Eknath Shinde said though the city has grown exponentially in the last decade, the funding required to upgrade the infrastructure has been inadequate."It is very unfortunate that the Congress-NCP government is discriminating in the allocation of resources for infrastructure. Mega projects are all located in Mumbai while growth centres such as Thane are denied funds," Shinde said. Giving an example Shinde said, if work on the Kherwadi bridge could be completed in 200-plus days, then what prevents the contractor to achieve the target here. This is nothing but a clear indication of Congress-NCP giving step-motherly treatment to Thaneites.

Traffic jams along GB Road in Thane give motorists a harrowing time Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | Jun 24, 2014, 10.53 PM IST THANE: Motorists driving from Ghodbunder Road towards Thane city or Nashik highway are a harried lot due to a delay in the completion of the flyover work at Kapurbawdi junction. Sources from the traffic department said that Thane is a gateway for vehicles, especially transport carriage vehicles coming from Navi Mumbai-JNPT towards Ahmedabad national highway and Nashik region towards Mumbai.Though one arm of the flyover was opened to motorists a couple of months ago, commuters coming from Ghodbunder Road towards Thane city or Eastern Express Highway have to bear the brunt as traffic moves at a snail's pace, especially during peak hours. A daily commuter, Venkatesh Khataokar, from Runwal Estate, said, "The traffic at Ghodbunder Road has been an issue since a long time. The flyover at Ghodbunder Road was planned to reduce traffic snarls, however, now it has become one of the major reasons for jams. This is really frustrating."While some prefer to take alternative routes, others have no option but to wait for a while at the junction. The traffic police have to deploy extra cops to help ease pressure. However, this also is not of much help. "At times, traffic comes to a grinding halt resulting in bottlenecks and traffic cops are on their toes to clear the jams," said Kiran Jadhav, a commuter. Even pedestrians face problems because there are no zebra crossings and motorists just speed up along this stretch.

MPs from Mumbai and Thane demand roll back in Mumbai suburban rail fare Moneylife Digital Team 24 June 2014 Rail minister Gowda has assured BJP and Shiv Sena MPs from Mumbai and Thane of a 'positive' decision on their demand to roll back the fare hike in suburban rail fares and an announcement to this effect could be made in a few days The Narendra Modi government has come under pressure from its own members of Parliament (MPs) to reduce the hike in the suburban rail fare in Mumbai. On Tuesday, all MPs from Mumbai and Thane from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena met railway minister Sadananda Gowda seeking a roll back. BJP MP Kirit Somaiya said Gowda assured them of a "positive" decision on their demand, and added that an announcement to this effect could be made in a few days. The recent hike in rail fares has led to a steep increase in the prices of monthly passes for Mumbai local trains. Mumbai's train network sees the heaviest rush among all suburban rail networks and is a lifeline of Maharashtra's capital and India's commercial hub. The MPs said that people in their area were deeply upset about the rise in monthly fares and the railway minister 'agreed' with them that the hike of over 150% in some cases was not good. "The minister said Railway Board officials will meet soon and a relief will be announced," Kapil Patil, MP from Bhivandi said. The state is going to polls later this year and leaders of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance do not want the hike to spoil their chances of winning the polls. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has publicly flayed the decision and demanded a rollback. Somiaya said Gowda has also assured them that more facilities will be provided to suburban travellers and security will be enhanced.

She did not take any tuition for Hindi. "The school teachers gave regular homework throughout the year and they always were ready to help whenever I approached any teacher," she says. Srijoni always stood 2nd or 3rd in her class. "But this is the first time that I have topped and scored such high marks," she adds. Sports and games: "I am not too fond of sports, but I did swim a lot. I love swimming and have been swimming since I was three. I haven't participated in any state level event though," she states. Two weeks before the board exams, I participated in an inter-school science quiz where I bagged the first prize." Entertainment: She likes watching TV and would watch it for an hour a day. She says, "I used to watch once in a while, but when my exams neared I used to watch only for half-an-hour." Secret to success: "Hard work is my only secret to success. I believe that studying from day one always works," says Poorna. Future plans: Poorna says, "I want to take up medical studies and be a doctor." Apoorv Kishore (95.6%) CBSE Board - Kendriya Vidyalaya Air Force School Study pattern: Apoorv never took any coaching class nor did he have any fixed timing for his studies. Rather he would study whenever he wanted. He has always been a good student and that helped him. Sports and games: "Apoorv has never been too much into sports. He would sometimes go down to play in the building. However, he likes to play chess and has represented his school a few times," says Apoorv's mother. Apoorv is interested in painting and apart from studies, that is what he indulges in. Entertainment: He likes watching TV, but is not hooked to it at all, says his mother. She adds, "I am a teacher and I do not believe in pressurising kids for studies. He would watch TV a bit and films - he loves watching Hollywood movies." Secret to success: He has been a good student since he was a kid, and has always been interested only in studies. The fact that he has been regular, has helped. His elder brother has guided him and so have his teachers says his mother. Future plans: Apoorv plans to take up engineering. Priyanka Bagwe (95.02%) ICSE Board - Billabong High International School Study pattern: Priyanka studied for two hours initially, every day. Later when the syllabus was over she increased study time to around five hours a day. "She had joined tutorials for Science, Maths and Marathi. We came back from USA when she was in her IXth standard and that is the reason she needed help in Marathi," says her mother. Sports and games: When we were in the US she was a good swimmer. In her IXth standard she played basketball. Entertainment: Priyanka loves to read books and fantasy novels and read most series. She is not much of a TV person, but surfed the internet sometimes. "We would go to Yeoor Hills almost every week and spend good family time there. Priyanka loves to go outdoors," says Bagwe. Secret to success: Success is a good combination of everything - self study, and teacher support. Future plans: Priyanka has opted for science and wants to take up medical studies. Vaibhav Pai (96.5%) ICSE Board - Hiranandani foundation School Study pattern: Vaibhav finished the science and maths portion of Std X during his vacation in the previous class. "This took the pressure off me during the tenth standard. I wouldn't have gotten time to study otherwise. Apart from this there was monthly rigorous testing in every subject. Our teachers increased the difficulty level of these tests so that we would study harder. There were two preliminary exams held in November and January, that also helped a lot," he says. Sports and games: Regular extra-curricular activities and weekly physical education classes worked in a positive way for them. He says, "It took pressure off us. There were cultural activities and inter-school events. I am no state-level player, but I regularly played football." Entertainment: "I did not stop watching movies but reduced them a lot. I love reading fiction novels and watched comedy TV shows," he states. Secret to success: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy - is an adage that Vaibhav believes in. He says, "One should keep a balance. Have fun, stay focussed and don't get stressed out." He advises, "Put on some loud music and dance. It helps a lot." Future plans: "I want to become a physicist. I will pursue pure science and engineering and keep both options open," he says. Study pattern: "Our school told us to be regular with our studies right from Std IX. I was consistent in all school exams and tests and so did not get burdened in the end." Anuya did not go for any classes, but opted for a test series. "I did around three-four papers with them." She adds, "Because I didn't go for proper tuition classes, after school, sometimes I would stay back if I had to clear doubts. Our teachers would always give us tips." Every day she would study for one to one-and-a-half hours and during exams the hours would go up to three or four. Sports and games: A national level basket ball player, Anuya's team had three wins.Entertainment: "I watched a lot of movies and television. At night after I would get bored of studying, I'd surf TV channels for a while. Music helped a lot. Even during boards I would listen to music," she says. Two arrested with cannabis in biscuit packets meant for Thane jail Vijay V Singh | TNN | Jun 24, 2014, 12.33 AM IST MUMBAI: Two persons were arrested with pouches of cannabis hidden inside biscuit packets during a nakabandi in Borivli last Thursday. The accused, Siddhesh More (25) and Siddhesh Shinde (20), have told the police that they were on their way to deliver the drugs to an undertrial at the Borivli magistrate court. The undertrial, who was at the court for a case hearing, was supposed to take the drugs to the Thane prison where he is lodged. The police, after interrogating the two accused, arrested a woman drug peddler, Parvati Harijan (40) from Kandivli (E). Though the cops went to the court to inquire about the undertrial, they were unable to trace him and are on the lookout. This is not the first time an undertrial was assigned the task to collect something during a court hearing and smuggle it into the jail. In the past, several objects have been seized while on their way to prisons. There have been cases of gangsters using this modus operandi and procuring cellphones, weapons and drugs inside jails. In Thursday's case, bike-borne More and Shinde were nabbed by the Kasturba police near Tata Steel in Borivli (E). "On spotting the nakabandi, the two immediately took a U-turn and tried to flee. However, they could not escape as a truck was parked on the roadside, making it difficult for them to move ahead," said senior inspector Vithal Damgude. When cops approached them and demanded documents, More and Shinde willingly produced all and offered themselves for frisking. But when a policeman inquired about a bag they were carrying, the accused panicked and asserted that there was nothing objectionable in it. On checking the bag, the police found manually packaged biscuits in it. "Inside the packets were several pouches of cannabis weighing 500gm," said assistant commissioner Dilip Rupawate.

Chavan has given a freehand to Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)'s education officer Ganpat More and has asked him to take the necessary action against the school. He has also threatened to declare the admissions of all those who have already been admitted to the Jr. Kg section as null and void if the school does not admit the 27 kids. He also said that all the 50 students, including the 27 who were derostered, will have to reapply for admissions. Now, More has to take a call on the issue as he has been in constant talks with the parents and school officials.''I have given More the liberty to take action and send me a report of it,'' said Chavan. Meanwhile, parents have threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike from June 23 if the school authorities do not admit their kids. ''The management has refused to relent from its stand because of which we are forced to protest,'' said a parent.More has issued a third show cause notice to the school on behalf of Chavan and have asked them to take responsibility for any consequences if the parents go on a stir from Monday. Even though they slapped a third notice, the education officer did not receive any response from the school management. All attempts to reach the school authorities by TOI were futile. ''Parents are now running out of patience. Now, they have also threatened to stage an agitation from Monday. This has left us with no option but to take action against the school authorities. In my last notice, it was clearly mentioned that the school will be responsible if any untoward incident takes place during the dharna,'' said More.

Rollback hike, demand angry Thane commuters Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 22, 2014, 02.30 AM IST Thane: The recent fare hike by the railways, which is almost 100%, is definitely going to make a big hole in every commuter's pocket. However, the commuters travelling daily from Thane using the local train demand of better facilities and services and if possible a rollback, as they will be forced to pay more from the coming week.Commuters and experts slam the railways saying that while there have been no fare hikes for a long time, neither has there been a significant increase in number of services all the while, but the crowd has simply swelled over the years. As per the railway plans, there will be a near 100% hike in season ticket fares and a slight increase in first class card tickets. So while the first class card ticket rates to CST from Thane is now Rs 120, the same will see an increase by Rs 20 while the season ticket will be Rs 1310 from the existing Rs 655. The second class monthly pass will now cost Rs 330 instead of Rs 190. A section of commuters said they could absorb the hike but will the railways ensure comfortable travel. "We travel by first class and are already paying more money and now it will cost us even more. Will the railways ensure that we will get adequate space to sit or even stand comfortably and not see urchins and policemen blatantly travelling in these coaches," questions Anil Khapre, a Thane resident who travels in first class to CST daily. "It's not fair for the railways to double up the season ticket rates. Paying Rs 1,310 monthly to travel from Thane to CST is not justified, as there is not even enough space to stand in the first class ladies compartment during peak hours. There are just 13 seats per compartment and I don't think paying so much is worth it. The railways should think of a rollback on the hike. If the railways want to hike fares by 100% they should ensure they provide at least something in return," says Aparna Shinde from Ghodbunder Road.

FYJC students opt for Thane colleges over Mumbai Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 21, 2014, 02.42 AM IST THANE: After city colleges scored better than their Mumbai and Navi Mumbai counterparts in the HSC exams, many FYJC aspirants are opting for colleges from Thane itself. This year, 20% colleges from the city scored cent percent results, while Mumbai city recorded a meager 4.46% and the western and eastern suburbs scored 5.59%. In Navi Mumbai, 16% colleges managed to score 100% results and Raigad came a close second at 17%.Going by these figures, students and parents preferred colleges from the city rather than Mumbai Scores of students opted for colleges from the city as their first option while filling the admission forms for FYJC. While some said that they chose colleges from Thane as it was closer to home, others felt that the institutes have improved their performance drastically. ''We would prefer that our son studies in a college from Thane as the quality of education is now at par with Mumbai. The recent news of Thane colleges outdoing the ones from Mumbai is also very encouraging,'' said the Joshi family from Naupada, who had accompanied their son to fill his admission form. Activists have also welcomed this move. ''Parents and students have started realizing the potential of the education system in this side of the MMR, said an academician. Till last year, most students and parents used to prefer sending their kids to colleges in Mumbai than Thane as they felt that the quality of education was better there. However, this trend is finally changing, thanks to the splendid performance of the city colleges this year,'' said a city-based educational activist.

Thane colleges have less seats to offer ANKITA G MENON | Thu, 19 Jun 2014-06:20am , DNA With an increase in the pass percentage of SSC results in Thane district this year, the number of seats available for first year junior college (FYJC) is far lesser. Around 19,162 students will be without a college if they decide to seek for admissions within Thane. With an increase in the population, and in spite of increasing the number of seats, they will still fall short as the pass percentage has increased by 10% as compared to last year. There are around 1,10,540 seats available this year, out of these, the number of students who have cleared the SSC exams are 1,33,654. It clearly shows a shortage of seats within the district. There are 17,910 seats available in arts, 54,620 in commerce and 33,670 in science. With around 33,910 students receiving distinction, 3,708 repeaters have also cleared the exams and the pass percentage has risen to 89.75. Securing admissions in the desired college would be tough within Thane district in spite of the high score. Amongst the 1,10,540 seats available, minority are 22,035 and management seats are 5,537. So the rest would be a struggle for the seats in the open category. "Two years back, 130 new institutes had come up, which included FYJC as well. Permission was granted for these institutes keeping in mind the huge shortfall of seats but even this will not be of any help this year," said RJ Rajput, secretary, principals association of Thane. Thane and Pune has been developing quickly in the past few years and this has led to a rise in many private universities. But this year there will be fewer seats in FYJC, if all decide to study within Thane district. "As Thane district comprises Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Bhayander and other places, the chances of students moving over to Mumbai are more. When students get more marks they tend to move out of their vicinity and look out for admissions in other privileged colleges. This may reduce the pressure in Thane colleges," said a senior official from the University.

After drive against snatchers, Thane cops take to alerting citizens Nishikant Karlikar | TNN | Jun 20, 2014, 02.43 AM IST THANE: The city cops claim that police action on Iranipada in Thane and Kalyan, said to be the hub of many repeat offenders, has to a certain extent deterred culprits from the acts. However, the growing incidents of such crimes reflect inadequate street policing. In fact, police investigations have revealed that chain snatchers originate from Irani localities like Ambivali, Piranipada and settlements in Bhiwandi.Recently, one Fiza Hussain from Ambivali was arrested for her role in providing logistics to her brothers involved in chain snatching. The police cracked around 27 chain snatching cases in the vicinity and recovered 664 grams of gold worth Rs 15.30 lakh. However, police claimed that they have noticed sudden change in the modus operandi of offenders to evade traps being laid out to nab them. The detection rate, too, has slipped compared to previous years. With an aim of reducing street crimes (chain snatching being one of them) by asking citizens to be cautious, the Thane city police have started an awareness drive.Ravindra Singal, additional commissioner of police (crime) said, "The department has initiated the move so that citizens take precautions and be proactive in dealing with crimes. This will help the police in nabbing culprits." The police will put up banners, flex boards and distribute hand bills as part of the awareness drive. "We have already erected several banners across the city and are planning to distribute hand bills and small booklets. We are also thinking of displaying flex banners in sensitive and crowded places or mainly at spots where chain snatching incidents are reported at large. We will have interaction sessions with citizens. Some city malls will also be roped in to create awareness wherein street plays or short films will be arranged," said Singal.

The member of the tribunal and Additional Sessions Judge S Y Kulkarni asked MSRTC to pay 70 per cent amount and the truck owner and insurance company to pay the balance 30 % to the family of Gajanan Vaiti, the victim. In an application filed through the deceased's son Shailesh, Vaiti, a resident of Namdeowadi of Panchpakadi, had said that on March 17, 2006 he was going to Nashik in the state transport (ST) bus. When the bus reached Kanvinde in Shahpur taluka on the Mumbai-Agra highway, the driver of the ST bus tried to overtake a truck but dashed against it in which the deceased was severely injured. He was taken to Medicare Hospital in Thane immediately.Stating the accident happened due to rash driving by the bus conductor, he filed a complaint and sought compensation from both the truck and ST bus drivers. Vaiti claimed a sum of Rs 2.50 lakh from MSRTC, owner of the truck Baljinder Singh Surgeet Singh and the insurance company for the accident. However, he died in 2009. The MSRTC denied any instance of rash driving by the driver and blamed the truck driver to be more responsible for rash driving. The insurance company contested Vaiti's claim while the owner of the truck did not turn up and the case was decided ex-parte against him. In his order, Kulkarni held that while the MSRTC was 70 per cent liable, the truck owner and insurance company were 30 per cent liable to pay the compensation. Central Railway calls for major drive, cleaner Thane station premises soon Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 19, 2014, 02.02 AM IST THANE: The Thane railway station premises are likely to look cleaner in the next few days as the Central Railway has asked its officials to undertake a major cleanliness drive. In a letter issued by the divisional office (operating branch), the railways have instructed the officials to undertake a cleanliness drive of platforms and toilets, tow unclaimed vehicles and attend to water leakages. "To ensure that the work is done properly, the authorities have asked for a photograph of stations before and after the drive and attach them with the report," the letter (which is in possession of TOI) mentions. A senior police official from Thane said, "Abandoned vehicles lying idle in parking lots of railway stations have raised security concerns as in the past such vehicles were used for planting bombs. If railways get unattended vehicles cleared from its premises it will be of great help to police in terms of security," said the police official. Filthy toilets, tubs full of garbage, walls filled with advertisement posters, stains are common sights at several railway stations in Mumbai. Hence to make a change, the railway authority has asked to conduct a special drive, said railway officials. Such exercises should be carried out once in six months. Thane school gets lessons on Israel’s education system by four academicians Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 17, 2014, 10.12 PM IST THANE: Academicians from Israel visited a Thane school as part of an idea exchange programme arranged by the state and coordinated by a non government organization (NGO). Five delegates visited Saraswati Secondary School, Naupada, on their way to address a conglomeration of teachers from the state on various methods of teaching. "This is the first Indian school that we are visiting. We are here to interact with the state school teachers over innovative learning methods and also to understand how Indian schools function. There is a wide difference in the way schools function here compared to the ones way back home. Indian schools maximize the output with limited infrastructure," said Dr Shahaf Gal, an education expert from Tivon, Israel. Four academicians from the country, along with an Israel consulate member Matan Zamir and a representative of the NGO Observer Research Foundation, said they were impressed as they were exposed to several aspects of the school operations. The members who wanted to see how an Indian school functioned said they were left spell bound and interacted with students and teachers by sharing some education ideas. The members told the assembly how schools in Israel have the flexibility to decide the syllabus and impart it to students. "The education ministry tells schools what has to be taught but they have the freedom to decide how to teach it. Also, the grading of students is majorly on presentations and the student's behaviour," said Dov Kupperman, another visiting expert. The members shared information on teaching techniques with their counterparts before leaving for Pune where they will meet state education officials. "The interaction with Israeli experts was fruitful. We got an insight about how they give priority to education in their country," said Surendra Dighe, trustee of the school.

Compensate with interest for not delivering ACs: Thane consumer forum TNN | Jun 18, 2014, 02.10 AM IST THANE: The Thane District Consumer Forum has directed the Big Bazaar retail store to pay compensation of Rs 25,980 to Hope India Foundation, a non-government organisation (NGO) in Navi Mumbai for not delivering two air-conditioners (AC). The forum directed Big Bazaar to also pay nine per cent interest on the amount from May 20, 2011 to September 4, 2011 and an additional Rs 2,000 towards the cost of litigation. The NGO had booked two window-fit ACs on May 14, 2011 and paid Rs 25,980 to Big Bazaar. The NGO stated in its complaint that it made the payment by cheque on May 15, 2011 and the store promised to deliver the ACs after clearing the cheque. The cheque was cleared on May 20, but the ACs were not delivered till May 22, 2011. As the ACs were urgently required, the NGO got split ACs installed. When representatives of the NGO visited Big Bazaar on July 14, 2011, the store informed them about an offer coming up the following month. In August, the NGO sought refund for the payment made for the two ACs as well as interest on the amount. The store agreed to pay back the amount, but without interest. The store also offered the NGO to purchase any other electronic items for the amount, but it did provide a credit note. Since the store did not pay back the money, the NGO filed a complaint with the consumer forum. In its reply to the forum, Big Bazaar said it was ready to pay back the amount on September 5, 2011, but the NGO refused to accept it if the store did not pay interest. The forum held that the store should have paid a reasonable interest on the amount as it had utilized the money for almost four months.

"Last year this ground-plus two storey structure located near Thane station was declared dangerous by the TMC. However, with a portion of the gallery coming down, the civic body does not want to take any chance. The machinery needed to raze the building reached the site on Monday afternoon and by Tuesday evening the building will be completely demolished," said a senior TMC official. The official added that the building was vacant as the TMC had declared it dangerous. Shops are operational on the ground floor, but remained shut on Monday when the incident took place. A woman named Sumangal Patil suffered a minor injury and was treated at a hospital in Naupada. She was allowed to go home later, added the official. The TMC is now planning to conduct a re-survey of all dilapidated buildings and update its list of dangerous and extremely dangerous structures in Thane. "If anyone is found occupying dangerous structures, they will be asked to vacate the premises. In case of extremely dangerous structures the higher authorities will decide whether they should be pulled down immediately or not," said the official. The TMC has 69 buildings in its most-dangerous list and 1,046 structures in the dilapidated and dangerous category. Civic authorities said that the inspection exercise is done throughout the year, but during monsoons the drive assumes more significance as this season sees dilapidated and dangerous structures collapse.

Thane city to get a slice of laughter as Johny Lever is coming to town Sharmila Ganesan Ram | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 09.54 AM IST THANE: In 1991, a silent pact occurred between a cartoonist and a comedian. Former Shiv Sena chief late Bal Thackeray sent a man to Johny Lever's house with a video cassette. It contained a speech by former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who was a member of the opposition then. "No matter what," Thackeray told Lever, "I want him in 15 days." As a fellow devotee of amusing characters, Lever understood the urgency. So, daily, after wrapping up his film shoot, the actor would watch, rewind and internalise Vajpayee's excruciating pauses, impeccable Hindi refrains and deferred hand gestures. And sure enough, within 15 days, the "dish"—as Lever calls each of his standup acts —was ready for delivery. Today, after a lull spanning from the engaging rhetoric of Vajpayee to the rhyme of Yo Yo Honey Singh, Lever has many more dishes to offer. Sixteen long years after his last standup show, the comedian is back to the art form that propelled him to fame with his own show titled King of Comedy, which comes to Thane on Friday, June 20. "It took me that long to come up with material worth two hours," says the 56-year-old. In all these years, the audience for comedy has evolved and their expectations have risen, he says, but the craft and its tempting challenges are still the same. "Standup," says Lever, "is like shorthand. Every bit must be both brief and profound or the audience will lose interest." It's little wonder that his energetic new show contains within it, many hysterical bits, including one on Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi who come out and play cricket at his will, the degeneration of Hindi film lyrics and the various types of alcoholics. "In standup, you must be able to hypnotize the audience," says Lever, who learnt the art from the roadside Madari."He would command his audience," says the actor, imitating the Madari who would promise amulets and even ask onlookers to unfold their hands while watching his monkey perform. The audience will follow instructions as if under a spell. Lever is capable of such hypnosis not only on stage but also during conversation. In between thoughts, he leaps out of his sofa and morphs into characters as easily as the man embossed on the wall outside his home, Charlie Chaplin. "You have to study intricacies," says Lever. The growing English-language standup scene, Lever says, is bold and edgy, but the comedian himself does not touch risque jokes. When you ask why, Lever—whose audiences mostly comprise families—turns austerely to his left and, in a muffled tone, asks if the driver had parked the car properly. He then looks to the right and makes even more petty conversation this time, enquiring when that aunt was due to arrive. There is no one on either side. Lever is merely showing how his audience might react to a vulgar joke.

‘Metro in Thane will bring relief’ Rajshri Mehta & Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 09.49 AM IST THANE: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan's announcement to connect the Metro rail with Thane has come as a great news for Thaneites. Lakhs of Thane residents have to take various modes of transports to reach their workplace everyday. With metro project in place, the travel time will be cut down to a great extent. The CM said that a new route will be diverted towards Thane from the existing Ghatkopar metro project. The government is expecting a feasibility report in a month's time while the detailed project report will be presented by Rites by August 15. Most residents, especially those staying along the Ghodbunder Road, will get a direct connect to Mumbai as the plan is to connect Wadala to Thane via Ghatkopar. Presently, those not using their own vehicles have to depend largely on autos or buses and then switch over to trains to reach Mumbai and then travel by road to reach their offices and vice versa. However, with the metro planning to connect South Mumbai, these residents may not have to switch multiple modes of transport to reach their respective destinations in Mumbai and back, observed a traffic expert. Experts say that if implemented, the metro project will easily do away with the traffic snarls on the busy GB road. "I am ready to take the metro as it will provide me the cool comfort of my car. In addition it will save me a lot of time and money," says Vishal Shah, a businessman who travels to central Mumbai. A civic official said that if the state project comes through it might wean away commuters from the various proposed infrastructure projects planned by the TMC. The civic body has plans to operate BRTS in Thane in addition to start the tram system that might take a beating, said the official.

Mumbai University’s first engineering college for women to start in Thane Yogita Rao | Jun 16, 2014, 12.01 AM IST MUMBAI: The University of Mumbai will get its first engineering college exclusively for women from this academic year. With a total intake capacity of 300 seats in the first year, the New Horizon Institute of Technology and Management will come up at a campus on Thane's Ghodbunder Road. The management has already got approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) four days ago and is now awaiting the state government's nod. The New Horizon Education Society, which runs three CBSE schools in Thane and Navi Mumbai, got the go-ahead to run computer, mechanical, civil, electronics and electrical engineering along with a new course on mechatronics (a combination of five disciplines including mechanical, electronics, control, telecommunication and computer engineering). The approved capacity for each of the five courses in the first year is 60 seats. In the near future, the institute will also offer management courses. It has fulfilled all requirements as prescribed by the AICTE, including the land requirement of 2.5 acres and other facilities such as a laboratory and classrooms. While the advertisements for faculty vacancies have already been released, the appointments will be made only after approval from the state government is received. A university official said, "In the last few years, the numbers of schools and junior colleges in Thane has grown in numbers, but the corresponding growth in institutes offering higher education has not been impressive. An engineering college for women will solve the problem for aspirants in the central suburbs who do not wish to travel too far for higher education. We are anyway working towards promoting women's education, so it is a good initiative." He added that most city students anyway are used to travelling to Navi Mumbai for engineering. The management will be the first institute affiliated to Mumbai University to offer its engineering courses to women. There are in all 65 engineering colleges under the university. In the state, there are only a handful of other managements, which run engineering colleges for women. SNDT University, Pune's Cummins College, Aurangabad's Savitribai Phule College, GH Raisoni Institute in Nagpur are some of the colleges running exclusively for aspiring women engineers. S S Mantha, chairman, AICTE, confirmed that the institute has been given the letter of approval for 300 seats. He added that the engineering college will be an advantage for girls in Thane and neighbouring suburbs.

Deluxe toilets at Thane stn by July 22 Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 09.52 AM IST THANE: Railway commuters may get better toilet facilities soon, as the work on the deluxe toilet blocks outside Thane station will be ready by July 22, if railway officials are to be believed. Presently, the three blocks at the station are proving to be insufficient to cater to the massive passenger traffic at Thane station. Commuters, especially women and the elderly, are inconvenienced as most of these units are not well-maintained. "Toilets, especially the one near platform 1, is in bad shape and the waste is discharged on the tracks. The railways must ensure that everything is in place before the rains set in to avoid health hazards," said N Deshmukh, a commuter activist. "Work on the new toilet block at the station is underway. We are working towards making it operational for the public by July-end," said a senior station official at Thane.

Thane district will finally be split into 2 parts from August 15 Chittaranjan Tembhekar & Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 14, 2014, 05.06 AM IST THANE: India's most populated district, Thane, will finally be split into two — one a highly urbanised district led by the Thane collectorate and the other with a more tribal populace living in remote areas. Administrative convenience is the main driver of this move. The creation of the state's 36th district, likely to be called Palghar, was cleared by the state cabinet on Friday. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the new district would start functioning by August 15, and will have 56 government offices located in Palghar. "The new district will need a new administrative set-up, right from offices to appointment of staff," a senior official from the Thane collectorate said, adding, "the Konkan divisional commissioner in his report said the new district will need about 4,300 government employees, including 155 Class-I officers to manage the daily administration." The report, prepared by then Konkan divisional commissioner Vijay Nahata, also suggested two names for the new district—continue with the existing Palghar or rename it 'Sagar' due to its largely coastal topography. The cost of setting up the new administration and starting various schemes in the new district is expected to be around Rs 466 crore. Sources said the state will have to budget for over Rs 300 crore just to set up the offices of the district collector, superintendent of police, district court and zilla parishad office. While district boundaries will be redrawn, the proposed Palghar district will include the eight tribal-dominated talukas of Mokhada, Jawahar, Talasari, Vikramgadh, Wada, Dahanu, Palghar and Vasai. Thane district's jurisdiction will cover the urban talukas of Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Murbad and Shahapur. Barring Vasai and Dahanu, all other talukas in the new district are known for remotely located tribal villages where malnutrition, health, education and transportation have been major concerns. "Since there will be a division of the population, administering public service schemes will become easier," said a senior Mantralaya bureaucrat who has earlier worked in Thane in various capacities. The division of Thane district had become a political issue due to its large area and population. In fact, there have also been demands to trifurcate the revenue and land record administration. The bifurcation was earlier scheduled for May 1, 2013, but was postponed due to some procedural issues. The last districts carved out in the state were Bhandara-Gondiya and Hingoli in 1995. The split will also redraw the political map of the region as Thane district's representation in the assembly will reduce to 18 from the existing 24 MLAs. Palghar will have six assembly segments. "Thane is dominated by the Shiv Sena except for Navi Mumbai which is controlled by senior NCP leader Ganesh Naik. Palghar district is under complete control of Hitendra Thakur and his family. With the split in the region, political equations too will change as these leaders will now have to concentrate on other areas," a political analyst said, adding, "Citizens, especially the tribal population, can benefit more than politicians, as implementation of welfare schemes can now be more focused according to the needs of both districts." Following the government's in-principle approval to splitting Thane, Nagpur MLA Nitin Raut demanded that eight new districts be created from existing ones in Vidarbha region. He said Nagpur district could be divided into Metro Region, Katol and Nagpur, Gadchiroli can be split to create a new district of Aheri, while Chandrapur could be split to create Chimur-Brahmapuri district. There is a long-pending demand to form Khamgaon district by dividing Buldana, similarly tribal parts of Amravati could together form Achalpur district, Pusad split from Yavatmal and Aashti from Wardha districts.

Mumbai Metro services to be extended till Thane: Prithviraj Chavan Chittaranjan Tembhekar | TNN | Jun 14, 2014, 03.32 PM IST MUMBAI: From Ghatkopar, the first metro would be extended to Wadala towards Mumbai, Teen Haat Naka and Kasarwadavli towards Thane to form the metro region's fourth route. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday said government is expecting a final feasibility report on this route within a month's time. The detailed report from Rites is expected by August 15. While replying to a calling attention motion, he admitted that there were mistakes in the first metro which has been implemented on build, operate and transfer basis with private participation and investment. He said the Thane route would be implemented on the lines of Metro 3 which has been planned with the help of Japanese loan. CM's statement was enough to indicate that all the next routes would now be implemented on the lines of Metro 3 for which the loan has been taken from Japanese Bank for International Cooperation instead of involving private developers and investments as in case of the newly operational first line. It may be recalled that the state and the Reliance Infrastructure are locked in a fierce battle over tariffs. As per the preliminary report the cost of the project is expected to be around Rs 22,000 crore and will have 29 stations on the 32-km route. The Rites have been asked to prepare the detailed report now. If extended up to Wadala, the metro will then synchronised with the monorail which will start operating to Jacob Circle from Wadala. Monorail already runs services from Wadala to Chembur. According to sources, the move will also increase the traffic for monorail which runs through congested areas of SoBo and eastern suburbs of Mumbai. According to Chavan, the directors of the metro rail corporation also felt that considering the growth potential along the eastern express highway EEH and Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) road, the metro service could go elevated as well as underground and both options could be studied by the consultants. The first line Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar has already been made operational while for the second metro, Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd, the existing contract for elevated corridor could be converted underground for which Rites had been appointed. The third metro Colaba-Bandra-Seepz has been approved by the centre.Considering the prospects of development within Thane city the government had proposed a metro route within Thane city connecting Teen Haat Naka, Kapurbawadi, and Ghodbunder. However, the project is not economically feasible since majority people in Thane city and nearby areas travel to Mumbai to work. According to Chavan, the proposal to connect Thane and Wadala was hence being examined by MMRDA. Chief Minister said the proposal to link Thane, Kalyan and Bhiwandi through mass rapid transit rail is also being studied.Earlier monorail was planned for these cities but now due to growing population, the government has asked Rites to study rail-based mass rapid transit system to link these cities with the newly proposed Wadala-Thane-Kasarwadavli metro. Meanwhile Girish Bapat of the BJP demanded separate ministry for the metro railway while NCP's Nawab malik said metro railway should over entire MMR which CM assured to consider.

Metro services to be extended till Thane, says Chavan By: Press Trust of India | Mumbai | Updated: June 14, 2014 3:10 pm Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday said the Mumbai Metro would be extended till Thane and the final project report would be available with the government in a month’s time. Replying to a discussion on the calling attention notice for the proposed Thane Metro project at the legislative assembly, Chavan said a metro service within Thane city was not economically feasible. Considering the prospects of development in Thane city and in Ghodbunder road area, he said earlier the government had proposed a metro service in the Thane city- Teen Haat Naka- Kaapurbavdi- Ghodbunder road sector and had hired firm Consulting Engineering Services (CES) to prepare a project report including its economical feasibility. However, the report said the project is not economically feasible, since majority of people in Thane city and nearby areas travel to Mumbai for work every day, Chavan said. According to him, a new proposal of Wadala-Ghatkopar-Teen Haat Naka (Thane) is being examined by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). A detailed project report by consultant Rail India Technical and Economic Service (Rites) is being prepared. According to the preliminary report, the proposed metro line, linking Mumbai to Thane will cost Rs 22,000 crore and will be of 32 km and have 29 stations. The detailed report is expected in a one’s month, Chavan added. The board of directors of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation also feels that considering the potential of growth and development along the Eastern Express highway and the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) marg, the new metro service can be elevated as well as underground. The option is being studied by the consultants, he told the house. The Chief Minister said a proposal to link three main cities of Thane district – Thane, Kalyan and Bhiwandi through a mass rapid transport system is also being studied. Earlier, a mono rail service was planned for these three cities. Chavan said a study was conducted few years back but due to growing population in these areas, the government has asked Rites to conduct a fresh study for a rail based mass rapid transport system to link these cities with the proposed Wadala-Thane-Kasarwadavli Metro. BJP MLA Girish Bapat demanded a separate ministry for Metro railway, while NCP’s Nawab Malik said metro railway should cover the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region MMR). Chavan told the members that their suggestions were good and would be considered. He said the government has planned metro service for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur as well. The first phase of Mumbai Metro 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar was recently inaugurated on June 8. Sharing details of Metro line 3, he said the Metro line 3 Colaba-Bandra-Seepz has been approved by the centre and for the second Metro line- Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd, Rites is studying the feasibility for its underground sections. Thane legislators Eknath Shinde and Pratap Sarnaik (both of Shiv Sena) through the calling attention notice had criticised the government for delay in commissioning of the Thane Metro saying that the population in Thane district has crossed one crore mark and there was immense pressure on suburban central railway. They asked the government to start the proposed metro service at the earliest to cater to the growing population in the district. Chavan told them that the detailed project report linking Mumbai metro to Thane would be sought before August 15. However, they were not satisfied with the government’s assurance and staged a walkout.

World Cup kicks-off in the dark in Thane B B Nayak | TNN | Jun 14, 2014, 11.05 PM IST THANE: The FIFA World Cup didn't kick-off on a good start as the city was enveloped in darkness on Thursday night. All the promises made by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) of supplying uninterrupted power went down the drain. Many residents complained to the power provider, but all these fell on deaf ears. Football fans who had made several arrangements to watch the opening ceremony along with their friends and family were a disappointed lot. Residents were upset as they did not receive any prior intimation about the power cut. ''My friends and I were eagerly looking forward to watch the much-talked about opening ceremony of the World Cup. But we were simply unfortunate. This is not the first time that the power supplier is doing something like this. It is an everyday issue now. We have been facing the same ordeal since the last four to five days,'' said Ganesh Edge, a resident of Vasant Vihar. Residents are an upset lot as the MSEDCL officials seems to be doing nothing about the power woes in the city. ''The authorities must understand the sentiments of football lovers. It is a major disappointment to everyone who missed the live action from Brazil on Thursday night. I am a Brazil fan and I was really upset as I did not get to watch their match with Croatia. To enforce a power cut in the middle of the night and that too on the day of the World Cup has not gone down well among football lovers,'' said Saroj Gaitonde, a resident of Patlipada. Meanwhile, MSEDCL sources said, ''Generation shortage has forced us to cut off supply for some time. But on Thursday night, we faced a technical problem in the transformers at Wagle Estate, Kolset and Ghodbunder Road due to excessive load. However, we tried our best to restore power late at night.''

BJP MLA Girish Bapat demanded a separate ministry for Metro railway, while NCP's Nawab Malik said metro railway should cover the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Metro in Thane will bring relief’ Rajshri Mehta & Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 02.43 AM IST Thane: Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's announcement to connect the Metro rail with Thane has come as a great news for Thaneites.

First Metro line to be extended to Wadala and Thane Chittaranjan Tembhekar | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 12.38 AM IST MUMBAI: The Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line is likely to be extended to Wadala and neighbouring Thane to form a fourth route. The prominent destinations in Thane will be Teen Haat Naka and Kasarwadavli. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday said the government was expecting a final feasibility report on the route within a month. The detailed report from Rites is expected by August 15. Replying to a calling attention motion, Chavan admitted that mistakes were made with Metro 1, implemented on the build-operate-transfer basis with private participation. He said the Thane route would be implemented on the lines of Metro 3, which is to come up with a loan from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation instead of involving private developers. The statement was enough to indicate that all the routes in future would follow the Metro 3 model.Since the opening of the Metro 1 along the VAG corridor last Sunday, the state and Reliance Infrastructure are locked in a fierce battle over tariff. For the extension, an initial report estimates a cost of Rs 22,000 crore. There will be 29 stations on the 32 km route. At Wadala, Metro-monorail synchronized is planned.

Deluxe toilets at Thane station by July 22 Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 02.51 AM IST THANE: Railway commuters may get better toilet facilities soon, as the work on the deluxe toilet blocks outside Thane station will be ready by July 22, if railway officials are to be believed.

Thane civic body plans to rope in private doctors to treat the poor for cataract Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 15, 2014, 02.45 AM IST THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is mulling over roping in private doctors to treat and operate cataract patients in the city and has made a provision of Rs 1 crore in its budget to take the project ahead. "People are not coming forward to get cataract operation done from the civic hospital. In the past three years merely 3,400 operations were performed. People may be reluctant to get the operation done in civic hospitals. In order to encourage poor people to get cataract operation done on time and from reputed doctors, the corporation is thinking of involving private medicos," said a civic official. Accordingly, the civic body had included the proposal in the subjects that the standing committee was scheduled to take up for discussion on Wednesday. However, the issue was not taken up for discussion as the standing committee was adjourned after paying a tribute to late BJP leader Gopinath Munde. The National Urban Heath Mission (NUHM) was launched to address the health concerns of the urban poor and the civic body of cities was included as part of the plan drawn to provide better facilities to the poor. According to national parameters, average two per cent of the total population should be treated under the urban health scheme, but when it comes to cataract operation in Thane, the ratio is way below average. "Though the intention of this proposal is good, political leaders in the TMC may oppose the move and would emphasize on strengthening civic hospitals with modern equipment and qualified doctors," said another TMC official.

Engineering student stabbed to death in Mumbai local train Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Updated: Jun 13, 2014, 06.39 AM IST MUMBAI: An engineering student, Tushar Jadhav (23), son of a sales tax officer, was found with stab injuries in the luggage compartment of a Trans-Harbour local in the early hours of Thursday. He died on the way to hospital. Tushar, an Airoli resident, had boarded the Thane train from Panvel but was fatally assaulted near Ghansoli station by an unidentified person. Jadhav reportedly had stab wounds on his neck, stomach, back and hands, but police have ruled out theft as no valuables were missing from his person. A blood-soaked knife, a broken sandal and a black bag were found inside the compartment. Jadhav, who was studying at an automobile engineering college in Ratnagiri, was returning with 10 friends after appearing for his last exam. His friends got down at Panvel while Jadhav boarded the luggage compartment at the Thane-end, adjoining the ladies coach, of the first Panvel-Thane local at 4.35am. Police said as the train was passing Ghansoli, the constable in the adjoining coach heard screams for help. But when he got down at Rabale, the next station, he found an injured Jadhav alone in the compartment. Police said as the train started, he boarded the coach and alerted the helpline which arranged for the victim to be taken to a hospital in Thane. However the youth died by the time he reached hospital. Jadhav had called his mother Vandana, a housewife, after boarding the Konkan Kanya Express on Wednesday night. But when his parents dialled his number the next morning, they got no response. "We learned of the incident only after police informed us around 8am," said his father Arun Jadhav. Relatives alleged that police negligence was responsible for Jadhav's death. "We were told by some policemen that the constable dismissed the screams as those of some drunkard. The constable only got off at Thane to check what happened in the adjoining coach," alleged Hemant Natlekar, a relative. However, DCP Rupali Ambure dismissed allegations that the cop in the train failed to react to the situation and said police were checking CCTV footage along stations where the train halted. The train was regulated at the station for over two hours as initial investigations were still going on. This blocked one platform for the Trans harbor trains that could use only the other platform throwing the schedules of morning peak hour trains in disarray. "We had to regulate the train till 7:30am at the platform as the police was investigating the case. Train were running late on this sector but we ensured it didn't last beyond 10:30am," said a station official. Eyes donated Parents of the deceased T Jadhav decided to donate the eyes of their son before his cremation. His father said there was no such wish made by his son but it was a voluntary act. "We wanted him to remain alive in this world and this was one of the best ways we could do," said a relative at Thane civil hospital where the eyes were donated.

64 Thane schools refuse admission to kids under RTE quota Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 13, 2014, 10.31 PM IST THANE: Despite repeated warnings and reminders, many schools in the city are still turning down students seeking admission under the Right To Education (RTE) quota. According to sources, the education department has received several complaints saying that schools have turned down parents. As many as 2,532 seats have been allotted under the RTE quota. But, till now, only 553 have been filled. Harried parents have complained saying that schools are citing lame excuses while refusing admission. Though school authorities have said that students will be admitted in the second round, parents are skeptical about it. According to sources, out of 104 schools that have the RTE quota, 64 did not admit students under it this academic year citing various reasons. ''I live in Kokanipada and there are three schools in my vicinity. Around eight students had approached the schools to get admission under the RTE quota, but they did not receive any favourable response,'' said a parent, who has now approached the TMC's education department. Another parent also echoed the same views. ''The school that I had approached kept on repeatedly calling me. But so far, my child hasn't secured an admission,'' he said. Meanwhile, the education department said that they will look into the matter and take stern action against anyone found flouting norms.

Decision to bifurcate Thane district appropriate, says MP Press Trust of India | Thane June 13, 2014 Last Updated at 20:06 IST Kunbi Sena chief and Congress candidate from the Bhiwandi Lok Sabha constituency Vishwanath Patil said here today that the Maharashtra Chief Minister had taken the approporate decision by bifurcating the Thane district. The government should have also bifurcated the talukas of Sahapur, Bhiwandi, Dahanu and Palghar into Khardi, Ambadi, Kasa and Manor for better administration, he told PTI. He also said that since Manor was centrally located and equidistant, it should be made the headquarters of the new district. Meanwhile, the new district would lose benefits under the "centrally backward region", if Vasai is included in the district, experts have opined. According to these norms, the district should have at least 50 per cent of total tribal population to get these benefits. If Vasai is included, it would lose these benefits and hence there is already a demand that Vasai should be removed from the new district.

New District to be Carved Out of Heavily Populated Thane Updated: June 13, 2014 21:52 IST MUMBAI: India's most populous district - Thane - will be split and a new district Palghar carved out of it soon, officials said in Mumbai on Friday. Pending since 20 years, the proposal to split Thane - with a population of over 12 million, nearly 10 per cent of the state population - was approved by the state cabinet in Mumbai on Friday, but immediately sparked protests from various opposition parties, including the Shiv Sena. Besides being the most populous district in the country, it also has the largest number of seven municipal corporations for any district in the country, nestling in its 9,600 sq. km area. In Maharashtra, after Mumbai, it is the second biggest in terms of number of assembly segments - 24 in four Lok Sabha constituencies, and is the third most industrialized district in the state. With history dating it back to 1817, Thane today offers some stark contrasts. On one hand, with the ongoing urbanization Thane city is dotted with skyscrapers, swank malls and multiplexes, flyovers and wide roads, and on the other, barely a few score km away are some of the most wretched tribal villages and hamlets in the hilly forested regions and tiny fishing villages on the coast. Terming the bifurcation as politically motivated in view of the ensuing assembly elections, the Shiv Sena and other parties had demanded trifurcation on the basis of the coastal, hilly and urban make-up of Thane. Vasai Independent legislator Vivek Pandit has demanded that since the problems of these three distinct areas are different, the state government should have split Thane into three districts to serve the people better. This is the first major bifurcation of a district after 1999, when Gondiya and Gadchiroli were created in the eastern Vidarbha region of the state, taking the total count to 35 districts in Maharashtra. After the creation of Palghar - by Aug 15 - the state will have 36 districts.

Railway activists are now questioning the security measures on railway premises despite tall claims made by authorities. We have always been requesting the station officials to ensure they install adequate security measures at the station but that seems to have fallen on deaf ears, said N Deshmukh, a railway activist from Thane. "We feel scared to travel in train at night alone. We feel the need of police presence in general compartments at night," said Manish Gupta, a resident of Kalwa.A station official admitted there are inadequate number of cameras at several stations and said a review was needed on their location. "There are insufficient number of cameras on the platforms and the ones installed do not capture the entire area," said a railway official from Kalwa station, who had recently written to higher authorities regarding reworking the CCTV placements. Around two months have passed but there has been no response, said the official. A senior Government Railway Police (GRP) official agreed that Thane and the Trans-Harbour lines needed more coverage but said they had adequate personnel who man trains after dusk. The railways said providing security on station premises was the responsibility of the Railway Protection Force and GRP. "They must coordinate among themselves," said a senior official. Tushar Jadhav, an automobile engineering student, was stabbed repeatedly by an unknown assailant with a knife while he was on his way home in the wee hours of Thursday. In April 2014, a man was killed and his body was dumped on the railway platform.

Consider waterways option in Thane: Sena Manoj Badgeri | Jun 14, 2014, 02.07 AM IST THANE: Keeping in mind the increasing number of vehicles hitting the roads daily and the population growth in the city, Shiv Sena leaders have suggested exploring waterways as an alternative mode of transportation. "Traffic in the city is increasing by the day. Lack of advance planning has resulted in slow moving traffic at several key junctions. Also, road infrastructure projects planned for Thane are not taking off or are delayed. The city has a vast shoreline and exploring the same for transportation seems a viable option," said MLA Pratap Sarnaik, who recently wrote to the state about the same. On Thursday, Sena MP Rajan Vichare also met the union minister of forest and environment to boost this mode of transport. "A request to start waterways from Thane Creek front has been made to Sunil Jawdekar," said a source. Residents along the Ghodbunder Road find it difficult to commute using roads or rail. If the waterway is opened for traffic, it would help in decongesting the city roads, said a civic official.

Cong, NCP agree on Thane bifurcation By: Express News Service | Mumbai | Published:June 13, 2014 5:20 am After a complete rout in the Lok Sabha polls in Thane district, the Congress and ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have finally evolved a consensus on the contentious issue of bifurcation of Thane. The proposal is now expected to be brought before the state cabinet on Friday. Congress and NCP leaders said the bifurcation move could be declared either on the final day of the state legislature on June 14 or sometime next week. The proposal to bifurcate Thane into two districts — Thane and Palghar — has been caught in the cross hairs of Congress-NCP electoral maths for some time now. During a meeting convened by Legislative Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh on Thursday, both parties decided to go ahead with the move. The Congress-controlled revenue department has already moved a formal proposal regarding the bifurcation, which has been pending with NCP leader Ajit Pawar-led finance department for some time now. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Pawar were present in Thursday’s meeting.

They were accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 400 from a businessman in a cheque-bouncing case. The judgement was passed on the ground that the sanction to prosecute the policemen was granted by the then-joint commissioner of police without 'applying his mind' on the facts of the case. Ramchandra Kalantre, a police naik and Vasant Jadhav, a constable, were tried under the sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 400 as part of Rs 1,000 bribe to favour one Praveen Tare, a printing press owner. "No evidence or explanation was recorded in the order or before the court as to why this bribe was sought. There are no material facts in the order or in the replies given by the competent authority and in absence of both, it is clear that the sanction was given mechanically without application of mind," said the judge. Tare had filed a cheque-bouncing case against Dadar-based M/s Venus Marketing India Ltd. On September 11, 2005, the two policemen said a non-bailable warrant had been issued against Tare. Though Tare pointed out that he was the complainant, the two cops made him sit at Naupada police station till 11.30am after which they sought a bribe of Rs 5,000. The amount was reduced to Rs 1,000 through negotiations. As Tare had only Rs 400, the policemen accepted it promising not to serve the warrants. Tare then filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/followceleb.cms?alias=Vasant Jadhav,Ramchandra Kalantre,Policemen,Police naik,Anti Corruption Bureau

He is also a teacher working five days a week at the Schissler Academy of Fine Art in downtown Loveland on Fourth Street. He says that he does not work fast, however, he has created over 100 finely crafted works of art. Gorek defines his work as contemporary realism. He takes his art beyond a simple bowl of fruit into a surrealistic fantasy. Through painstaking attention to detail, he his work could be considered hyperrealistic. He markets his paintings in galleries and travels to places like Santa Fe to promote his work and to add galleries. He frequently enters juried competition and tries for at least three shows a year.

Thane: 2 killed as chemical tanker falls on slums INDIA Updated: Jun 11, 2014 19:34 IST Two persons were on Wednesday killed and 9 others injured when a chemical-laden tanker fell from the Mumbra bypass in Thane over hutments in an adjoining slum area. The tanker, containing Methyl Hexil Nitrate, left from Vadodara in Gujarat and was heading towards the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust when it met with the accident at around 7.45am near the Devripada-Atlanta bypass, Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam said. The driver was apparently reversing the tanker and did not realise that it was on the edge of the road. As a result, the rear wheel skidded off the road and the driver lost control of the vehicle, he said. The weight of the chemical-laden container tore open the concrete barrier wall, built to prevent such accidents, and came hurtling down nearly 150-200 ft on the hutments, severely injuring its residents, Kadam said. The rescue work continued for six hours to extricate those trapped in the hutments, involving efforts of more than 40 employees of the RDMC and fire brigade, while two giant cranes and fire brigade vehicles were also pressed into service, he said. The deceased were identified as Madhavi Prabhakar Halde (15) and Hari Bhiku Chouhan (35), RDMC said. The injured were rushed to a nearby municipal hospital. Locals demanded authorities to implement speed restrictions and monitoring of seedy vehicles. They also demanded that a safety wall be put up as residents living near the Mumbra bypass, where several accidents have taken place. A case has been registered against the tanker driver, Manilal Pal, under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304(a) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code at the Mumbra police station, a police official said.

Thane traders seek single window clearance, scrapping of LBT B B Nayak | TNN | Jun 12, 2014, 02.52 AM IST THANE: The city's business fraternity has demanded a single window clearance for assessment of taxes. Traders and industry owners are not against taxation, but they need a one-window taxation policy and scrapping of multiple assessment systems for a slew of levies such as value added tax (VAT), sales tax, services tax, profession tax and local body tax (LBT). Businessmen suggest inclusion of LBT into VAT and introduction of single assessment for all levies being imposed. They are in favour of including LBT into some other existing tax net to avoid harassment from the local self government when they start separate assessment of the same. In the meantime, the government has suggested the traders a few options in lieu of LBT, which the community vehemently turned down. And instead they hinted about going on an agitation of not paying the levy and campaigning against the Congress-NCP alliance in the assembly election. "We want complete abolition of LBT. We met chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday and urged him to do away with LBT in all municipal corporations in the state But the deadlock is still intact. We apprised him of the single window system where every assessment can be done at a time," said Pauly Jimmy, member of Thane Vyaparodyog Mahasangh (Tham). Traders found LBT more complicated while filing quarterly, half-yearly and yearly returns for the transactions made by them over the receptive periods. "We have to spend additional hours to prepare return documents separately for different taxes, which have become a nightmare for us. Our customers are being overburdened due to the multiple tax structures. So, they prefer neighbouring towns," said a trader.

Thane Municipal Corporation upset with state govt’s ‘LBT alternative’ statement Sanjeev Shivadekar | TNN | Jun 11, 2014, 02.19 AM IST THANE: The revenue collection of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) may see a temporary fall as traders have decided to stop paying local body tax (LBT) following the state government's statement that it would discuss the issue with the municipal commissioner to see if there is 'any alternative' to it. However, this has not gone down well with civic officials who feel that delay in tax payments would have an implication on the TMC's treasury. "One doesn't know whether there is any alternative to LBT. But since traders are expecting some changes, especially after chief minister Prithviraj Chavan's statement that his government will take up the issue with concerned civic authorities to find an amicable solution, many from the mercantile community have decided not to pay taxes till the issue is sorted out. "The government should immediately sort out the issue. If there is delay, then it would have financial implications on the functioning of the civic body," said a TMC official. A trader from Navi Mumbai said, "Before general elections the Democratic Front (DF) government was adamant on imposing LBT. But poor performance in general elections has forced them to rethink. Chavan has been saying that the DF government will hold talks with policy makers to find a solution to this issue." Last week, the traders' association held a meeting in Navi Mumbai to discuss their further course of action. They decided to continue their opposition to LBT.

Thane: Two-wheeler Co asked to pay Rs 50,000 for deficient service Updated: June 9, 2014, 3:49 PM IST Thane: A consumer forum has ordered a motorcycle manufacturing company to pay Rs 50,000 compensation to a customer for deficient services. Monesh Mishra, a resident of Vasai town in Thane district, had complained to District Consumer Redressal Forum that on May 5, 2011, his two-wheeler met with an accident as a result of which it needed repairs. The next day, he gave it for repairs to the service centre of the company. However, the service centre did not carry out the repairs for about three months, saying the spare parts were not available. Hence, the complainant said he had incurred business losses as there was deliberate delay on the part of the company to repair the vehicle. The complainant claimed an amount of Rs 1.80 lakhs towards business losses, Rs 1,000 as compensation per day from May 6, 2011, towards mental and physical suffering, and Rs one lakh towards legal expenses. Forum president Umesh Jhavalikar and member ND Kadam, in their order last week, observed that the company was expected to repair the two-wheeler, which was given to it for repairs on May 6, 2011, within a reasonable period of time. However, the period of four months taken by the company for repairing the vehicle was not only indicating indifference but also inefficiency. The bills for repairs produced by the complainant showed that the repair charges were just Rs 5,000, hence the repair to the vehicle was minor and simple and expected to be done within one month and the vehicle should have been handed over to the complainant. However, the respondent company took four months for the repairs and caused discomfort to the complainant and hence there are lapses in the providing services to the customer, the forum held. The forum ordered the respondents Honda Motor Cycles and Scooter India Private Limited, at Alwar in Rajasthan, its unit at Pune and the service centre, Aditya Honda Motors at Vasai, to jointly and severally pay Rs 50,000 compensation to the complainant within 60 days of the order.

"We had a meeting with the school authorities last week but they did not give us a substantial reason as to why they dropped the 27 kid's name from the list. So we have sent a show-cause notice after which the school has reverted saying that they are ready to hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue. ," More said.

TO PREVENT FLOODING, CR CREATES GAP TRAPS AT THANE PLATFORMS By Rajendra B Aklekar, Mumbai Mirror | Updated: Jun 9, 2014, 10.41 AM IST Even as the Railways are in the process of raising the height of platforms to plug gap traps that have proved fatal, dangerous gaps have been created at Thane station's platform No 7 and 8, the edges of which have been broken to lay pipes meant to discharge rain water and prevent flooding during monsoon. The two platforms cater to outstation trains, and for the past 15 days commuters, including families with children and heavy luggage, have been put through an ordeal while boarding and alighting the express trains that halt for just two minutes. While pumps and pipes have been installed at a number of suburban stations to prevent flooding of tracks, the ones at Thane have left four huge holes at the edges of the platforms, right at the spots where passengers have to board and alight from trains. "The gaps could kill anyone who is in ahurry and running to catch a train. The huge pipe could cause one to stumble and fall onto the tracks. The job seems to have been done hastily and haphazardly. Who will be responsible if someone falls?" asked Mahesh Agarwal, who arrived by an outstation train on Sunday. "There's also a huge manhole near the pipes on platform No 8 that is covered with thin metal sheets and a fencing grille. There's always a lot of families who have children and heavy luggage at these platforms. Somebody's foot can easily get caught in this gap," said Akhsahta Dhawale, another commuter. The Mumbai Railway Pravasi Sangh has taken note of the hazard. Its president, Madhu Kotian, said, "Passengers are always running around the platform looking for their compartments while carrying their luggage as the trains halt for just two to three minutes. The Railways should be pulled up for placing these pipes in such a way that they pose a grave risk for passengers." Subhash Gupta, representative of Central Railways' passenger grievance cell, the Zonal Railway Users' Consultative Committee, condemned the pitfalls and asked whether the Railways were waiting for accidents to happen. "Are they waiting for another Monica More to happen? This is sheer callousness," he said. When Mirror contacted Central Railway Divisional Manager Mukesh Nigam, he said that he will get the stations checked and rectify the problem.

Thane to be bifurcated by August 15 as Maharashtra government decides to chalk out plans Sat, 7 Jun 2014-06:45am , DNA The state government is all set to divide Thane district into two by August 15 for administrative convenience, assured revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat in the state legislative council on Friday. The issue of division of Thane district was pending since two years. On Friday, members of legislative council — Sanjay Dutt, Muzzaffar Hussain, Bhai Jagtap and others — raised the subject during the question-hour session. Showing keenness for the bifurcation, state government said a meeting on this will be held immediately after the session to discuss details. For the last two years there has been a demand for the separation of Thane district owing to its large size, geographically as well as in terms of population. Thane has seven municipal corporations and several municipal councils, which makes it difficult for people to get their issues solved quickly. Even for the state administration, functioning and daily operations are a huge task. Members of the council, along with leader of Opposition Vinod Tawde, in the legislative council demanded to know how the district will be divided. Thorat replied the district has 56 state departments with a total of 4,300 employees which will have to be divided during the bifurcation. State government has received proposals from the departments regarding division of employees. These proposals are pending with the finance department. Thorat added that it has been two years since zilla parishad elections and, hence, the decision has to be taken soon so that the bifurcation happens before the term gets over. However, Tawde brought an important issue before the legislative council and said earlier there was a demand as per which the district was expected to be divided into four parts — urban, hilly, coastal and farm land. "How is the government planning to divide the district?" he demanded to know, adding that state government has always given assurances but has not acted on them. Shivajirao Deshmukh, chairman of the legislative council, assured the House that the meeting on the issue will be held soon after the assembly session. Thane: First class commuters upset over bad service, high ticket prices Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 8, 2014, 02.46 AM IST THANE: Despite paying almost twice the amount as compared to those travelling by second class, first class commuters have been complaining about not getting proper treatment.Commuters and activists feel that the railways are not doing anything in order to ensure that they get a comfortable and less-hectic ride. The harried commuters are now demanding for either better facilities or reducing the ticket price. The difference in rate between a first class and second class ticket is huge. Still, both commuters face the same ordeal while travelling, especially during peak hours. Commuters have been complaining about broken seats, jammed windows, filthy compartments and lack of space. ''If the railways cannot ensure a comfortable ride then they must at least reduce the price of tickets. I pay around Rs 2,000 for my first class season ticket from Thane to Vashi. The seats are also damaged most of the times and there is garbage strewn around," said a commuter S Soni. The problem has also drawn the attention of passenger associations from the city. Its high time the officials take some steps to ensure that the commute is safe and comfortable,'' said Nandkumar Deshmukh, a railway activist from Thane. Meanwhile, a railway official dismissed all allegations and said that all first class coaches are well maintained.

Thane district’s living standards up by 58% in last six years Nitin Yeshwantrao | TNN | Jun 7, 2014, 02.03 AM IST THANE: The well being of Thane's 1.20 lakh population appears to have improved in recent years, as the district's per capita income topped the state chart with a 58 per cent growth in the last six years.According to the Maharashtra Economic Survey, Thane's per capita income, which is calculated by evenly dividing the state's income with the district population, rose to a fabulous Rs 1.57-plus lakh in 2012-13 from 66,174 in 2007-08. The impressive growth of Thane pales the performance of neighbouring Mumbai which recorded a growth of 56 per cent during the same period. A section of officials said though seven of the 13 revenue talukas in Thane district are tribal dominated, the urban metros such as Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayander, Kalyan-Dombvili among others are a big draw for the migrant population. Besides being a residential hub offering affordable homes, trade and industry has grown in recent years here. Statistic compiled in the survey report indicated that though Mumbai ranked first in the state with a highest per capita income of Rs 1.67 lakh in 2012-13, the increase in individual incomes in the last six years stood at 54 per cent.Pune, which was second in the state, followed by Mumbai, for the high per capita income, is pushed to the third position because of the rising per capita income of Thane district. "Pune's growth rate was 55 per cent in the last six years. From 68,155 in 2007-08, the income levels have soared to 1.50 lakh by 2012-13. Should Thane district be split into two, with Palghar district, the per capita income would better Mumbai,'' the official said.

Thane colleges beat Mumbai in 100% pass race Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jun 7, 2014, 02.05 AM IST THANE: The state class XII results have sprung up a new trend where Thane colleges have beat their Mumbai counterparts in securing 100% results in the exams. About 20% colleges in Thane have registered 100% pass rate compared to 4.46% from Mumbai island city and 5.59% each from western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai. Figures sourced from the Mumbai division of the state board reveal that of 75 colleges from Thane city, 15 have had 100% results. This is way higher than that scored by Mumbai colleges, with only five colleges in the island city registering 100% pass rate followed by the east and west suburbs where eight of 143 colleges and nine of 161 colleges, respectively, scored 100% pass results. Experts from Thane said this was heartening news and can break the myth among many that only Mumbai offers the best in education in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). "Many people always believed that Mumbai colleges offered better learning infrastructure than the suburban ones. Though, of late the trend has been more towards opting for colleges situated near homes and students relying more on external coaching, this statistic reveals a healthy trend," said Surendra Dighe, a Thane-based education activist.Laxmikant Pande, chairperson of the state board's Mumbai division, said this was a welcome trend. "This year our focus was more on textbook learning and empowering students rather than relying on external sources and we feel it has paid off," said Pande. A representative from Vasant Vihar junior college agreed that the trend of academic excellence was slowly moving towards this part from the earlier bastions of Dadar and Vile Parle. "We have a huge middle class population here that lays special emphasis on education and this is one of the main reasons why we are seeing good academic results. Our mantra for success was that we gave individual attention to all our students," said the representative.

It began with Congress party’s chief whip in the council Sanjay Dutt questioning the long-pending approval to the bifurcation of the Thane district. The Congress-led state revenue department has moved a proposal for Thane’s bifurcation but the state finance department, led by NCP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, is yet to green-light the move. Suggesting that objections to the proposal were political in nature, state revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat (Congress), after being prodded by Dutt and Opposition members who joined the chorus, said all proceedings in this regard would be completed before August 15 this year. Later, during discussion on an alleged multi-crore scam in the NCP-controlled tribal development department regarding purchase of micronutrient chikkis in Ashram schools in Maharashtra, Congress member Chandrakant Raghuvanshi alleged involvement of the former department minister and sought a probe against him. While ordering a CID probe in the matter, council chairperson said if allegations against the former minister are serious, they must be probed. The alleged scam pertains to the purchase made when senior NCP leader Babanrao Pachpute headed the tribal development department.

‘Provide public parking lots, get additional FSI, Thane Municipal Corporation tells builders Nitin Yeshwantrao | TNN | Jun 6, 2014, 02.51 AM IST THANE: The controversial Public Parking Lot (PPL) policy is all set to be replicated in Thane after being implemented in Mumbai with plans proposed for creating multi-storeyed parking towers sharing space with high-rise residential complexes here. The civic administration has initiated changes to the development control rules proposing additional floor space index (FSI) of anywhere between 1 and 4 as an incentive to builders in exchange of creating public parking plazas on their plots. Though being projected as a novel scheme to decongest city roads, the real beneficiaries would be the builders who would utilize the additional incentive FSI for increasing the floors on their high-rises here. The proposed amendments to the development control rules are likely to come up for discussion before the general body of the corporation shortly and could add to the clutter of residential towers in the lake city. "It is meant to benefit the builder more than the car-owners who are a hassled lot today due to shortage of parking space. The policy is completely flawed and it is heavily tilted to favour the builders' lobby. The argument being made out is that it is designed to decongest the roads. However, by giving incentive FSI, the corporation is only adding to the population density in the area. The number of flats in the building would increase because of the incentive FSI and so will the number of cars," said a civic official."On paper the policy appears to be very noble. It says that the PPL would be handed over to a private bidder other than the builder or the residential society. However, who is going to keep a check if the builder puts up a front agency and secures the contract for maintenance of the public parking tower? In such a situation, he would sell off the parking slots to the residents and pocket handsome profits as it is a win-win situation for him,'' the official cautioned. The public parking policy, first implemented in Mumbai in recent years, was misused by the builders to avail of the incentive FSI and builder high-rises. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan was compelled to intervene and had issued orders to stop all projects which were yet to take off from the drawing board stage.

Thane cops in dark on video rule for accident probe Rajshri Mehta | TNN | Jun 5, 2014, 02.01 AM IST THANE: The Thane police are clueless about the government orders that permit them to take account of witnesses in a road accident through video-recording, even six months after the notification was issued. Information gleamed by former BJP legislator Sanjay Kelkar through advocate Suyash Pradhan has revealed that the police have not carried out a single video-recording of witnesses or good samaritans in accidents. "The government resolution was issued in the second week of November 2013. However, the police are clueless of the rule, which incidentally would not only help in their investigations but also create confidence among the general public," Kelkar told TOI. He recently met Thane police commissioner Vijay Kamble and urged him to create awareness of this notification among police officials.Kamble has taken Kelkar's suggestion and acknowledged the need for creating awareness of the new rule among police officials. The government resolution (GR) states, "As per the 2009 amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act, 1976, the statement of a witness can be recorded through any audio-visual device. However, in case of accidents, the statements are not recorded this way, thereby forcing witnesses and those who have helped the injured to go to the police station and the court time and again." The resolution further adds that due to this reason several people do not help accident victims or come forward as witnesses. "The first hour after an accident is called the 'golden hour'. If treatment is received during this time, several lives can be saved," the resolution states. Through this order, witnesses can now either depose through video-conferencing or a phone. They need not go to the police station or court to depose.

Thane: Two Brick Kiln Labourers Thrashed Over Minor Issue Cities | Press Trust of India | Updated: June 04, 2014 11:23 IST THANE: Two brick kiln labourers were allegedly thrashed severely by two brothers over a petty issue in the tribal Wada taluka of the district, police said today. The victims identified as Pandurang and Devram Wagh (who is hearing and speech impaired), in order to earn some extra money, went to work at a farm after their daily work at the kiln owned by two brothers - Atul Vekhande and Abhijit Vekhande - in Moj village of Wada taluka on May 28, police inspector Sanjay Hazare said. However, when the brothers got to know that the two labourers working for them had gone to work somewhere else, they reprimanded Devram, locked him in a room and allegedly beat him up and also passed some casteist remarks, Hazare said quoting a complaint lodged by the victims. Later, when Pandurang went to enquire about Devram, he was also beaten up by the brother duo. Nearly 17 tribal families, including those of the two victims, then met Wada tehsilar Dr Sandeep Chavan and complained that they were not even being paid minimum wages and were subjected to harassment. The victims also complained to Wada police on Monday following which offences under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement) of IPC and section 3(1) and 10 of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 were lodged against the two brothers. Thane: CIDCO mulls action against educational institutes denying admission THANE, JUNE 4: City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) said on Wednesday is mulling to take action against those educational institutes, which have denied admission to wards of ‘Project affected people’ (PAP), affected by various CIDCO projects in Navi Mumbai. CIDCO, the government agency which has undertaken several development projects, mainly includes the Navi Mumbai airport, metro rail facility and IT park, had leased out land to educational institutes at concessional rates and had made it mandatory in 1999 for institute managements to reserve some seats for children of PAPs and CIDCO employees. Of late, CIDCO has received complaints from the PAPs and CIDCO employees that some school administrations were denying admissions to their children, following which a meeting of the school managements was called up in early last month, CIDCO said in a statement today. Subsequently, on 15th May, letters were sent to the schools asking them to furnish details of admission available in the new academic year and the number of reserved seats for the PAPs, it said. However, of the total 25 institutes, only eight replied with details. Institutes that did not furnish information included 14 junior colleges and three institutes running professional courses. The institutes may face action by CIDCO for violating the clause in the agreement for the subsidised rate plots, sources said.

Power in Thane will be restored by June 5: MSEDCL B B Nayak | TNN | Jun 4, 2014, 12.12 AM IST THANE: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) implemented a two-hour load shedding on Tuesday in parts of Wagle Estate, Kolshet, Ghodbunder Road, Balkum, Kopri, Kalwa, Vitawa, Rabodi and Panchpakhadi. The officials are non-committal about the uninterrupted power supply looking at the gap in power generation in the grid. The load shedding, which was imposed in Kalwa on Monday for three hours, continued for the second day in other parts of the city as well and this enraged the consumers."We have been charged for 24x7 power provision. But to snap supply at the peak of summer is unfair," said Raman Bhoi, a Kolshet resident. It is believed that a generation deficit of 3,000MW power in the system created a glitch in the supply mechanism which disturbed the whole chain from Sunday. MSEDCL's tall claims to provide uninterrupted power to Thaneites fell flat with the alleged emergency situation.Anik Dhar, a resident of Patlipada, "Power cut during summer is the worst situation consumers are experiencing. My elderly parents are at receiving end due to frequent power cuts." Dhananjay Pawar, public relations officer of MSEDCL said, "We had to stop supply to various areas in Thane city in two phases from 11.30am to 1.30pm and from 2.30pm to 4.15pm, owing to generation deficit. We are expecting system improvisation on Wednesday but by June 5 we will back to full restoration."

Thane Municipal Corporation misses nullah cleaning deadline, residents fear flooding B B Nayak | TNN | Jun 4, 2014, 12.13 AM IST THANE: The monsoon may arrive anytime soon in the city, but it seems like the civic officials are not rain-ready yet. The Thane Municipal Corporation had begun cleaning all nullahs across the city some time ago, but work hasn't been completed as of now. Nullahs in areas like Mumbra, Kausa, Shil, Diva, Rabodi, Wagle Estate are still left unattended. Residents and activists allege the lax attitude of the civic authorities for this. Non-completion of work can lead to flooding during heavy downpours. While residents are complaining about the slow progress, civic authorities claim that illegal is caused due to rampant illegal constructions in the absence of nullahs. According to civic sources, 80% of the cleaning work has already been completed. The remaining work will be taken up in the next three to four days. But residents are not buying this and claim that the TMC has failed to keep it May 31 deadline.''The civic administration had promised to complete all cleaning work by May 31 but later they postponed the date to June 5. The TMC has a daunting task at hand to complete all cleaning work in just two days,'' said Sanjeev Dutta, an activist. Civic officials claim that barring the Mumbra-Diva corridor all other areas have almost been cleared of filth and waste from nullahs. But the ground reality is different. "Work is underway at many nullahs and we hope only 60% work is completed. This time, we are anticipating a flood-like situation in low lying areas and in crowded slum pockets," said Mumbra resident Ayaz Shaikh. Speaking to TOI, Prakash Borse, deputy municipal corporator, said, "We have completed almost 80% work and the remaining will be taken up soon. Contractors have been instructed to submit their work report at the earliest. Mumbra is trailing behind as compared to other localities which we expect to finish soon." But experts feel that the haphazard and unauthorized construction of structures in Mumbra, Rabodi, Wagle Estate, Indira Nagar and Kisan Nagar are some of the fragile spots that are prone to water logging as storm water drains are in an abysmal state. "There is hardly any space being left to install a new drainage line. No planning has been done to construct nullahs that will flush out storm water and drainage water," said an activist.
