Thane: A 24-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly gangraped by two of her husband's relatives in Thane and the accused tried to push her into flesh trade, police said. One person has been arrested in this connection. One of the accused, Kanha Thakur alias Rohit Gulab Singh, from Nalla Sopara in the neighbouring Palghar district, befriended the victim on Facebook and later on WhatsApp. After some time, he threatened to upload on Facebook the pictures that she had sent to him and forced her to continue the friendship. 2016-07-31Social media keeps Thane's spirit afloat - Times of India
Social media keeps Thane's spirit afloat Freny Fernandes | Jul 31, 2016, 10.09 PM IST Thane: Even as heavy rain across the lake city brought with it a host of issues ranging from waterlogging and tree falls resulting in traffic snarls and chaos, it made a newfound community on social media. Be it on websites such as Facebook or mobile applications including WhatsApp or Twitter, citizens, NGOs as well as civic officials came together to the aid of people in the city. While the people stuck in traffic and waterlogged areas reached out to other citizens through these mediums and warned them to take different routes or refrain from venturing out, others scanned the world of tweets, Facebook posts and WhatsApp information for non-traffic zones to help stranded populace navigate back home. Kiran Patel, a Majiwada resident, who was going for a picnic with her family, cut short her plans when she was got to know from her society WhatsApp group that even Ghodbunder road was waterlogged. "We were planning to go to a resort in Vasai in the morning via GB road. Just as we were packing, a member from my society who was stuck on her way to Kasarvadavli informed us that she was stuck in traffic for two hours in an update on our society WhatsApp group. We immediately cancelled our plan and spent the day watching the rain from our window," Patel said. "My neighbour who unfortunately has to work on a Sunday decided to come home halfway because of the rain. To prevent getting stuck in a traffic jam, he reached out through our society Facebook page and asked us for the best route back home. As I was following the traffic, I told him that the Waghbil exit could be used as it was comparatively better," said Shiamak Mishra, a Waghbil resident. In an attempt to prevent any chaotic situation, the civic body, too, reached out to the public via Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp. "Social media is the quickest way to pass on information to the masses. In situations like this, where it rained around 170mm in less than three hours and where thousands of people could get panicky, we had to assure them that we were doing our best to manage the situation, and that all was well. We kept updating citizens on all media platforms about the troublesome pockets, and the developments in the rescue and civic operations in the areas. Because of the media, the response time to the problem areas was quick as well," said municipal commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal.

Work on elevated station near Thane to start soon, assures Suresh Prabhu By PTI | Jul 30, 2016, 06.34 PM IST MAHARASHTRA: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has assured that work on the proposed elevated suburban station, between Thane and Mulund, will begin in the next two months. He gave this assurance to a delegation, comprising MPs Rajan Vichare and Shrikant Shinde, Thane Mayor Sanjay More and Thane Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, who met him in Delhi yesterday. Prabhu told the delegation that the technical feasibility report on the proposed station has been received and officials have been asked to initiate the work, Vichare said in a statement today. More than a decade ago, a station at Kopri was proposed to decongest Thane and Mulund stations. The idea was to reduce the inconvenience caused to Ghodbunder Road and Wagle Estate commuters who have to go to Thane station. This proposed station would come up on the land belonging to Thane Mental Hospital, just a kilometre away from the existing station. Around 6.50 lakh commuters make of Thane station, which has 10 platforms to cater to suburban and long-distance trains. During his visit to Thane in January last year, Prabhu showed his willingness to build the proposed station. "Central Railways has proposed a new elevated station between Thane and Mulund, which will be built on Eastern Express Highway. All Thane-CST trains will be run from this new facility. This would help passenger and traffic flow of old Thane station, which is handling a daily load of 6.5 lakh passengers." Vichare said. The project is likely to cost Rs 150 crore and Thane Municipal Corporation has suggested eight hectares of land for the project. Vichare said, "I am happy that this issue has finally been taken seriously by the Railway Minister and the authorities concerned. This has been a long-pending issue. Feasibility report is ready and the project is technically viable. I hope before Diwali, work on the new railway station will commence."

The incident has prompted the police to launch a probe considering that a few of the accused involved in a series of blasts in 2002-03 were from Padgah. The family of the victim, Rekha Gharat, initially claimed that it was a gas cylinder blast, but her son Abhijit (21) later told the Padgha police that he had got the bottle in gift wrapping under mysterious circumstances. Abhijit and his brother Jivan run a courier shop. On Tuesday morning, he went to the shop, parked his bike and went to make some purchases. Thirty minutes later, he found a plastic bag with a brown gift wrapper attached to his bike and "Abhijit Gharat sathi gift, batlicha dhakkan ughad (A gift for Abhijit Gharat, open the bottle's lid) scribbled on it. He removed the wrapper and found a tiny plastic bottle. He instructed his mother not to open it, but on Thursday night, she tried to open the bottle and it exploded. She sustained injuries on her face and hands and was taken to a hospital in Bhiwandi. She was later shifted to KEM Hospital; she is out of danger. The police said it appears to be a case of personal enmity, but they are also probing the terror angle. "Samples will be sent for analysis," said an ATS officer. "We are checking records to see if any suspects have resurfaced." The police had arrested over six youths allegedly belonging to the banned outfit, SIMI, for their role in the Ghatkopar, Vile Parle, Mumbai Central and Mulund train blasts in 2002-03. Saquib Nachen, a Padgah resident and office-bearer of SIMI, has been convicted in the cases, along with several others.
2016-07-29Thane police's Child Protection Unit helps 827 kids reunite with their families in last two years - Times of India
Thane police's Child Protection Unit helps 827 kids reunite with their families in last two years Shrutika Sukhi | Jul 29, 2016, 10.27 PM IST Thane: The police administration's focused campaign to reunite runaway children with their families has helped reunite 827 families in the past two years, officials of the child protection unit (CPU) here said. Operation Muskan, which was flagged off in July 2015, could be one of the most successful campaign of the CPU which was specially tasked to look into the cases of children found in correctional homes or begging on the streets or doing drugs or odd jobs in roadside stalls. "CPU was the first unit formed in the state to ensure that these children returned back to their families and were not subject to abuse on the streets. A targeted approach and a special force to deal with this issue was the need of the hour as the police stations are over-burdened with crime and maintaining law and order and missing cases were registered but there was no time to look into the cases. Even the Supreme Court had given orders that children below the age of 18 who are missing their complaints would be filed as kidnapping complaints, so that the complaints are taken seriously," said sub-inspector Rajiv More from CPU. The officers were specially appointed and the CPU was formed so that complete focus could be given to the missing or runaway children whose parents had sleepless nights thinking how their children would be. Out of these 827 children who were sent home 421 were boys and 306 were girls. In these two years i.e from July 2014 till June 2016 the unit had conducted four one month drives to rescue these children who were child labours, beggars, orphans etc. Also, amongst these four drives to trace the runaway or missing children and reunite them with their grieving parents, the highest number of smiles was put on 227 families here during Operation Muskaan which was in July 2015. "As many as 105 children who were pushed into begging on the streets or started begging after they were lost from their families were happy after being rescued as they were glad that they would now be able to complete their education and no longer beg for survival. Thane ephedrine haul: Mamta says she's not afraid of investigation Arvind Walmiki, Hindustan Times, Mumbai Updated: Jul 29, 2016 00:01 IST Facing investigation in the Rs2,000-crore ephedrine haul case, beleaguered Bollywood actor Mamta Kulkarni remained defiant and told HT that she was not afraid of any probe and will return to the country soon. The starlet did not reveal when she will come back from Kenya, where she has been staying since 1996. She was named in one of the charge-sheets prepared by the Thane anti-narcotics cell, which is investigating the drug case. A red-corner notice has also been issued againt her. According to the police, Kulkarni was to be named the director of Solapur-based Avon Lifesciences Limited from where the police seized 18.5 tonnes of ephedrine in April. The actor, who appeared in the films in the 1980s and 90s, rubbished reports that she was married to international druglord Vicky Goswami, a key accused in the drug case, and called him a well-wisher. I have done meditation for 12 years in Dubai, and besides Hinduism, I have not accepted any religion. I went to Kenya in 1996 where I met Vicky, but he is just my well-wisher. He has never touched me. We never married each other. If the police think otherwise, then ask them to prove our marriage, Kulkarni told HT from Nairobi and added that she has turned spiritual and sought solace in meditation. She also attended the Kumbh Mela in 2013. Hitting out at the Thane police for implicating her in the drug case, she alleged that her family has been harassed by investigating officials. Two days ago, she got a shot in the arm as Jay Mukhi, another key conspirator, retracted his statement that he had met her in Dubai and Kenya. Mukhi has retracted his statement. I don't know him and apart from that I have never had a word with him, she said. On the Rs 2,000-crore money trail, the actor stressed she earned money from her films and not from drugs. A colleague of Kulkarni said that she had transferred Rs 2 crore to her family over a period. Mamta had bought four flats in Mumbai with her own money in 1994. She sold some of them after the real estate prices appreciated. She has nothing to do with drugs. Only police ca only tell why her name is being dragged into the drug case, the colleague told HT. Kulkarni claimed that the waste ephedrine at Solapur plant lay at the back door and the former owner of the factory did not destroy it due to financial problems. Later, the Thane police raided the plant and seized the drug, she said. A senior police inspector from Thane commissionrate said, We don't nurse any personal grudge against the actor. We named her in the charge-sheet after a witness statement about the meetings. In addition, there is no provision for Mukhi to record his statement again. His statement was recorded under special judge and we have evidence to defend our side.

This is a violation of the Supreme Court rule that clearly states that hospitals should immediately take action for treatment of patients approaching them with serious ailment. But this hospital made the patient, who was reeling in pain, wait for 7 hours. Parkar, who is an employee with the Haj Committee, in the letter sent to Devendra Fadnavis on July 26, requested the CM to register an FIR and conduct inquiry against the hospital. "Due to negligence and irresponsible attitude shown by the hospital authorities of Mumbra city, it is requested to lodge FIR and conduct through inquiry against those who found guilty for deliberately delaying my wife's treatment," reads the complaint. His wife, Shahina Hashmat Parkar, 35, who is 5 months pregnant was having breathlessness and was taken to the hospital at around 9.00am. After check-up, the hospital advised him to get her immediate hospitalised. But the counter staff and consultants refused to admit her without the family deposing Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000. "My sister who accompanied her requested the hospital repeatedly. She informed that I was in Khed Taluka and would reach within 2-3 hours to deposit the money. But they refused and made my pregnant wife wait for 7 hours. In fact, they behaved very badly with my wife, alleged Parkar. Nabila Khan, from the PR department of the hospital, said, "We are probing into the matter. Until it's over, I won't be able to comment on it."

2016-07-25Demography Watch: Mumbai, Thane Witness High Growth In Muslim Population; Share Of Christians Declines In Goa - Swarajya
Demography Watch: Mumbai, Thane Witness High Growth In Muslim Population; Share Of Christians Declines In Goa Swarajya Staff - July 25, 2016, 9:38 am The latest demographic findings, according to the Centre For Policy Studies, show that Maharashtra and Goa exhibit an increase in the percentage of Muslims and a decline of Christians, in both states. The Centre For Policy Studies (CPS) has published its latest, twenty-seventh note on the Religion Data Census of 2011. This note shows a sharp rise in the population share of Muslims in several parts of Maharashtra and Goa, and the continuing decline in the share of Christians in both states. MaharashtraThe share of Muslims in the state of Maharashtra has increased by four percentage points since 1961, reaching 11.5 percent in 2011. This is the third largest after Kerala and Karnataka of all states to the south and west of the Gangetic plains. The growth has been particularly significant in the last two decades. Seventy-three percent of the state's Muslim population is urban. This is similar to the composition of Karnataka where three-fourths of the total Muslim population is urban. Muslims form a majority (population greater than 50 percent) in 20 of the 348 towns in the State and have a share of between 40 and 50 percent in another 21. Almost all of these 41 towns have witnessed a very high growth in the share of Muslims in the recent decades. Share of Muslims in Maharashtra and Goa, according to 2011 census Take the case of Malegaon, for instance. The share of Muslims has gone up from 67.4 percent in 1981 to 79.0 percent in 2011. In Bhiwandi, it has risen from 50.7 to 56.0 percent in the course of the last decade alone, a jump of more than five percent. In Greater Mumbai, their share has increased from less than 13 percent in 1961 to nearly 21 percent now. In Thane, there has been an even more spectacular rise from 4.3 percent in 1951 to 12.3 percent in 2011. During the same period, their share has risen from 10.5 to 16.6 percent in Akola (including Washim) and from 9.6 to 14.6 percent in Amravati. In Nashik, the rise is from 6.3 to 11.4 percent and, in the Aurangabad-Jalna-Prabhani-Hingoli part of Marathwada, their share has gone up from 12.7 to 17.2 percent. The share of Buddhists has been slowly declining since independence. Millions of lower caste Hindus had converted to Buddhism at the time of Independence, heeding the call by Dr B.R. Ambedkar. At the time, the number of Buddhists in Maharashtra had increased from less than 25 lakh to around 2.8 crore. Currently, their population has come down to 65 lakh. Goa's total population is 14.58 lakh. Of these, 66 percent are Hindus, 25 percent Christians and more than eight percent are Muslims. In North Goa, 76 percent of the populace is Hindu, 16.4 percent Christians and seven percent Muslim while there are 53.3 percent Hindus, 36.2 percent Christians and 10 percent Muslims in South Goa.One peculiar phenomenon to note here is that the share of Indian religionists (Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, etc) has actually seen an accretion in Goa. Their share was only 44 percent in 1910. It has reached 66.6 percent now. While their share saw a jump of 16 percent from 1910 to 1961, it has only increased by four percent since then. From 1961 onwards, the presence of Muslims has grown rapidly. They have gained 6.5 percentage points in their share in the five decades between 1961 and 2011. On the other hand, the share of Christians has declined from 55 percent in 1900 to 25 percent now. Here's what the composition of Muslims and Christians looks like in the state, according to the latest census: Religious demography of Goa at the sub-district level

2016-07-25Thane prefers petrol, diesel cars over CNG - Times of India - Times of India
Thane prefers petrol, diesel cars over CNG Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jul 26, 2016, 01.27 AM IST THANE: Most Thaneites prefer purchasing a petrol or diesel-fuelled automobile, as only a handful from the city opt for the environment friendly CNG vehicle. Experts say high maintenance, inadequate filling stations and lack of lucrative sops for those opting for CNG-powered automobiles could be luring buyers to opt for the traditional fuel driven cars even though the former could be environmentally safer. An automobile expert said the reason majority vehicle owners preferred petrol or diesel cars over CNG was probably the bulkiness of the gas kit (cylinder) that occupied most of the boot space otherwise used for luggage. Also, the poor pick up performance of CNG-powered vehicles in comparison to that of petrol and diesel could be another reason, said an expert. "Car manufacturing companies should come up with a design that could accommodate the huge bulky tanks which could free up the existing boot space. The cars are ideal for city roads, but often doesn't work well on long haul routes," says an expert. Less CNG refueling stations and longer queues at them could also be a deterrent and not to mention routine maintenance hassles which could be driving citizens towards the traditional fuel driven vehicles. "Thane city has just 13 filling stations that dispense CNG fuel as compared to the over 65,000 vehicles operating daily. The city hasn't seen an increase in number of fuel stations since 2013 despite number of CNG-powered vehicles increasing by nearly 20,000 a year in 2015," says a fuel dealer from the city. Further, experts express disappointment saying there has to be more awareness and sops for users to lure them into purchasing more eco-friendly fuelled vehicles. "The city of Thane is already choking with high emission levels and slow moving vehicles add to the toxicity in the air which requires immediate attention," said an expert. As per a recent study by the TMC's pollution control board, the air pollution index (API) at three testing spots in the city at Kopri, Shahu Market in Naupada and Raptakos Company in Shastri Nagar hovered between 50-93% for a major part of the year. The API between 51-75% is considered polluted while that beyond 75% is considered highly polluted. Officials and experts attributed the rising volume of pollution levels to the high density of vehicles in the city and the slow moving traffic. "The volume of traffic in the city and the slow pace at which it moves is majorly responsible for the high pollution levels. It has been proven that vehicles moving at 40-55 kmph emit less toxic fumes, but the traffic rarely moves at 20kmph thus resulting in high pollution levels. There is a need for more eco-friendly vehicles to operate in the city that can ease the pollution load off the city," said Vidyadhar Walavalkar, an activist.

On the basis of Jay Mukhi's statement, yesteryear actress Mamta Kulkarni was made an accused in this case and his statement was one of the clinching evidences against Mamta. They forced me to give statement as per their wish in front of the Vashi Magistrate u/s 164 of the Cr.P.C. They used to keep my father Mulji Rajshi Mukhi (aged 80 years) and mother Nirmala Mulji Mukhi (aged 76 years) till 1.30 a.m. to 2 a.m. in their office to put pressure on me and because of this pressure I gave statement u/s 164 of the Cr.P.C in front of the Vashi Magistrate, contents of which were not true. "COPS BLAME JAY MUKHI Police alleges that Jay Mukhi is one of the main people accused in the Thane drugs haul case who, along with Kishore Rathod and Manoj Jain, had gone to Kenya for the drug meeting. 2016-07-24Existential doubt for Thane church after errors in Mumbai DP - Hindustan Times
Existential doubt for Thane church after errors in Mumbai DP Manoj Nair, Hindustan Times, Mumbai |  Updated: Jul 24, 2016 23:35 IST As citizen groups point out more errors and omissions in Mumbai's revised Development Plan (DP) the city's planning blueprint for 2014, 34 residents of Thane are discovering mistakes in their city's DP. When they read about Mumbai's error-ridden planning papers, residents of Pokhran in Thane, curious about the status of a ruined three-century old church in their locality, decided to look at their DP. They found that the nine-acre plot on which the building stands is marked as a playground with no mention of the church. The DP was prepared in 1999 and Thane is expected to get a new blueprint after 2020. Members of the church are worried that it could be demolished as it is not marked in the DP. Shailendra Bendale, an officer in Thane's town planning department, said there are no plans to destroy the monument. Thane's DP does not have many errors, but Bendale admitted that the ruined church's absence in the document was an error. We prepared a land use plan in 1991 before the DP was made, but nobody pointed out that the church was not listed. Suddenly they are claiming that it is not marked, said Bendale, adding that the building is a complete ruin. I saw the church 30 years ago and nobody has repaired it or used it. Till today, the TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation) has not decided to demolish it. We are not touching the church. The history of the church has been documented recently. Mayur Thakare, an archaeologist with the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, said he visited the ruins in 2010 when he was researching medieval archaeology in north Konkan of which Thane is a part. According to Thakare, when Thane came under the Portuguese rule in the 16th century, Catholic orders such as the Franciscans, Jesuits, Augustinians and Dominicans arrived in the region, set up missions and churches and converted residents to Christianity. Thakare said Thane's association with Christianity could go back to at least the 14th century when there were Franciscans missionaries in the area. The Pokhran church called the Our Lady of Mercy Church was probably constructed in the early 17th century and was in regular use till 1737 AD when a war broke out between the Marathas and the Portuguese, said Thakare. When the war ended two years later, the Portuguese lost north Konkan to the Marathas. Pokhran residents said though the church was not used regularly, there were occasional religious services there. Workers from Raymond factory and the East Indian community would worship there, said Ignatius Quadros, 81. In 1977, a statue of a Hindu deity was found on the premises and when the dispute over which community should have the right to worship at the site was unresolved, members of the church moved the idol of Mother Mary to another building on the premises. Vandals are reported to have destroyed the doors and furniture, leaving the building to fall into ruins. More recently, there has been a dispute over the ownership of the land around the building the area is now filled with multi-storeyed housing with a construction company claiming that it has the development rights on the plot. The church members have challenged the plans and the matter is being heard by the courts. The residents of Pokhran want the structure to be declared as a heritage structure. We are collecting signatures from our parishioner to petition the municipal corporation, said Melwyn Fernandes, joint secretary of Our Lady of Mercy Welfare Association. Thakare said the church needs to be protected. The Our Lady of Mercy Church is a beautiful specimen of Indo-Portuguese art and architecture. We should protect it, not just for the local resident but also for others.

Realty boom for Thane: Flat sales doubled in 2015 from last two years Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jul 24, 2016, 12.19 PM IST Thane: The primary market for residential properties in Thane last year saw a near double the increase in quantum of flat sales compared to the previous two years. Experts attribute the rise to affordable realty rates and easy access to neighbouring cities that is fast drawing prospective home buyers especially the middle and higher middle class to the lake city who were looking for an option to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. An observation by global analysis firm Jones Lang Lasalle shows that the absorption rate (the absorption rate is the rate at which available homes are sold in a specific real estate market during a given time period) in the Thane primary market in 2015 averaged 19 flats per day, which is nearly double the count when compared to the sale in 2013, which was of 10 flats per day."The sales of new flats in Thane peaked at 6,800 in 2015 as compared to 3,700 in 2013 and a slight increase to 4,400 in 2014. Attractive rates and easy access to other cities in the MMR makes it a lucrative bet to purchase flats here. The civic infrastructure is also improving in this part of the region drawing buyers," said Ashutosh Limaye, head of research services at Jones Lang Lasalle. Meanwhile, the generation of new units remained modest over the same period. While 4,000 new units were released or launched in the market in 2013, the numbers swelled to approximately 6,500 each in the next two years. The first half of the 2016 calender year has seen nearly 2,000 flats released in the primary market. In contrast, the inventory of flats has also risen from 6,200 units in 2013 to nearly 8,540 units by the end of June 2016. Meanwhile, the rates for residential properties at several pockets in the city have remained almost stagnant spare for a few exceptions. "Builders have been including freebies instead of reducing prices of flats across the city," said an industry player. The consumption of the existing inventory of nearly 8,540 flats will not be a problem, forsees Limaye, adding that the city in the present scenario can easily exhaust its existing inventory in just seven quarters or nearly two years as compared to Mumbai that would require another three years or Navi Mumbai where the supply is exceeding the demand. Meanwhile, the corporation has seen nearly 150 new proposals lined up for approvals in the present year that could add up to the existing inventory of flats. A senior official from the TMC's town planning department said they have already issued nearly 1,500 certificates till the last fiscal year for various projects in the city and the scenario looks healthy for development this fiscal too. In addition, the city has a potential of generating nearly 1crore sq feet of residential space, say realty players, estimating from the existing few industrial plots awaiting to be converted into residential zones in the coming few years. Majority of the proposed projects are in Daighar, Kausa, Diwa, Kalwa, Kavesar, Shil, Panchpakhadi, Wadavli, Majiwade, Manpada, Naupada, Manpada and Kasarvadavli, inform experts. "The city has a strategic location and has developing modes of transportation like metro and roadways. In addition, there is a stable cultural background and ample socialising avenues within the gated complexes in the city, which proves to be a good draw," sums up Rajesh Gadgil, president, Thane real estate agents' association.

Thane holds first deemed conveyance adalat for socs At least 31 housing societies submitted their applications to resolve various issues affecting their deemed conveyance in Thane district's first deemed conveyance adalat which was held on Tuesday. There are many housing societies in Thane region which do not have deemed conveyance either due to ignorance or laziness. There have been cases where the residents woke up to the importance of this deed when the landlord sold off the land to some other developers without informing them. Therefore, to avoid such and many related problems, Thane district collector Dr Mahendra Kalyankar had announced holding deemed conveyance adalat (DCA) where the housing societies, officials concerned from the colllectorate and others would come together and resolve the issue. Hence, on Tuesday, the first DCA was held at Niyojan Bhavan where 31 societies had submitted their applications. In this adalat, there were officials from Thane collectorate, district sub registrar's office, Thane Municipal Corporation) and others. Most complaints were related to non-issuance of OC (occupancy certificate), payment of stamp duty, changes in building plans, etc. "The departments concerned were instructed by Kalyankar to address the issues of the societies and correspond accordingly," said a senior official from Thane district collectorate. It may be recalled that earlier the deemed conveyance process involved submitting 34 documents which made people stay away from this cumbersome process. Later, this was reduced to eight documents and in the past two months the Thane district collectorate resolved 12 issues of occupation certificate (OC) and the housing societies were given the Ocs. The next DCA will be held on September 22.

Over 7,500 people join signature campaign for better facilities at Thane station NAVEETA SINGH | Updated: Jul 19, 2016, 06:45 AM IST, DNA Tired of poor facilities at Thane railway station, around 7,500 passengers on Monday participated in a signature campaign aimed at making things better. The very first commercial train journey in the country was ran between Thane and Mumbai. Despite this rich history, the condition of the railway station is quite appalling. The station is used by over 6.5 lakh people every day for travelling to Mumbai, Vashi and other adjoining suburbs. However, the facilities provided at this station are far from satisfactory for the commuters. The ATVMs (automatic ticket vending machines), which were put in place to help passengers save time and avoid long queues, have not dysfunctional. "What is the use of the smart card when the ATVM machines do not function," asked Anil Patil, a regular commuter. The situation becomes worse during peak hours when some of the ticket windows are closed. Moreover, the lifts installed outside the station do not operate many times and senior citizens, including differently-abled are forced to climb the stairs. Even the public toilets at platform number 10 are shut down. To address all these issues Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) organised a signature campaign. "We collected as many as 7,749 signatures from commuters who agreed that all the above issues need to be addressed," said an official from the NCP. These signatures will be sent to the railway minister Suresh Prabhu for him to take immediate action.

Thane real estate: Why this Mumbai suburb could be a good bet for sky villas By: Kaizad Hateria | Published: July 19, 2016 12:24 PM Thane's cost, connectivity, proximity to Mumbai and infrastructure make the concept of sky villas in the area a much more attractive proposition. The year 2016 has seen real estate find its footing and start surging ahead, albeit conservatively. Recent Colliers Residential Property Research and Forecast Report reveals that the first quarter saw a moderate influx of new launches in the country with 34 per cent of the launches concentrated in Mumbai itself. Capital values in most regions remained stable and there was a surge in demand which cleared inventory and made room for new launches. Knight Frank half yearly report also indicated that the share of residential launches in Mumbai is up by 29 per cent. Additionally, there has been a steady rise in the sales by as much as 23 per cent in the first half of 2016. With present policy changes and stable market conditions, it is expected that the real estate investment will further boost the sector.

2016-07-19Thane FYJC 4th list cut-offs drop, some students get upgrade, others not lucky - Times of India
Thane FYJC 4th list cut-offs drop, some students get upgrade, others not lucky Freny Fernandes | TNN | Jul 19, 2016, 10.41 PM IST Thane: The fourth and final list for FYJC admission was declared on Monday evening and had slight drop in the cut-off percentages to the top city colleges. Where a few students got an upgrade in their college many others were forced to stick to the college allotted by the state. Till last year, junior colleges were allowed to take in students through an offline admission process once the online admissions were through. As the education department has scrapped the offline system this year, many city students are stuck without a college or are forced to join the colleges they have not heard of. Sayali Salunkhe (16), a Castle Mill resident who secured 81% in her SSC exams let go of her admission in Mulund College of Commerce in the first list hoping that she will get a college closer to her home in the next three lists, but in vain. "When we got MCC college in the first list. We thought of letting it go, as it was a little far from home. We didn't expect that her name would not appear in any other list. Now, we cannot even take admissions offline," Sayali's father Kiran Salunkhe told TOI. Meanwhile, Majiwada resident Durgavati Chavan who scored 74% was forced to accept her admission in a college she didn't even know about. "We were asked to give a list of 15 schools we preferred, but my daughter hasn't got any of them. To ensure that she doesn't lose a year, we have confirmed her admission in an isolated school in Wagle Estate. Without offline admission, there is no way our daughter can make it to a good college," said Sudarshan Chavan, her father. While it could be estimated that the large section of students have captured the seats in good city colleges, many of these colleges still have vacant seats. "We didn't get any names for arts admission in the third and fourth list. We have around 75 seats still vacant, and many parents coming to us for their children's admissions, but cannot entertain them because of the shutdown of offline admissions," said R.J. Rajput, principal of MH High School and Junior College here.

Thane youths develop app to keep a track on students NAVEETA SINGH | Updated: Jul 18, 2016, 06:10 AM IST, DNA Ever since information technology has shrunk the world into a global village, there is an app to meet your every need. Accordingly, parents who worry about their children's safety and also their academic activities can now keep a tab on the same through an app called '360 Track', developed by two Titwala locals. Young entrepreneurs Swapnil Dabhade (25) and his sibling Mayur (24) got curious in 2013 about a news report that said that every year, over 1 lakh school students go missing. Moreover, Maharashtra tops the chart in this report. "So we got thinking that there should be some way to stop this and started doing our research," said Swapnil. The duo — who have a firm in Thane, Horizon Technologies — got talking to parents and school authorities. "One teacher from a certain class said that, one day, three of his girl students did not come to attend his lectures. When he called up their parents, he learnt that they had bunked the class," Swapnil added. He also said that this got them thinking and they came up with a system that has five components — a device, smart card, SMS service, online software and mobile app. The device is installed at the entrance of the school/college/class and the smart card is given to the students. As soon as the student enters the premises of the educational institution, an SMS is sent to his or her parents immediately. Moreover, parents can go online and learn about their ward's attendance, marks, notice board, etc. "Since both parents work in a 9am - 6pm work culture, they do not have the time to go to their child's school. So, with this app, they can also chat with the teacher and vice versa," Swapnil said. The app has been installed in Jayraj classes in Kalyan and they have also just signed a deal with a convent school in Thane, he added.

2016-07-17'Thane still doesn't have a proper solid waste mgmt system in place' - Times of India
Thane still doesn't have a proper solid waste mgmt system in place Freny Fernandes | TNN | Jul 17, 2016, 10.53 PM IST The heaps of urban waste, unsanitary landfills and absence of a dumping facility to dispose off the daily 650 meteric tones of garbage and litter is a looming crisis staring before Thane. However, some residents like city-based ophthalmologist Dr Lata Ghanshamnani has started a do-it-yourself movement to reduce, reuse and recycle waste at homes and housing societies. TOI spoke to her on the various ways and means to go ahead with this initiative. This is the excerpts from the interview. Q. You have been corresponding with the TMC to make Thane a zero waste city. Are you satisfied with their contribution, response and actions? A. The TMC has been very encouraging and optimistic. However, the plans fell short when it came to implementation. While they have been creating awareness among the masses on the need for cleanliness, their role of providing citizens with a sustainable waste management model is still lagging behind. Q. Who is at fault for the heaps of waste lying in various areas of the city? A. Citizens as well as the government share the blame equally for the mismanagement of the municipal waste. While the corporation is supposed to provide citizens with a scientific waste disposal model which handles wet, dry and medical waste in a way that does not pollute the environment, it is the responsibility of each citizen to segregate their waste and make this process easier. Q. What can be done to improve the way garbage disposal is being managed? A. Firstly, we need to reduce our generated waste. Citizens waste tonnes of food on a daily basis, which adds to the waste. The rest of the waste has to be disposed scientifically. If we segregate our waste at home, use the wet waste to make manure and recycle the dry waste, the civic officials will only have to dispose the medical and reject waste. Q. Do people in general respond positively and change their old habits. Are they really taking steps to limit their solid waste output as is expected in the Swach Bharat Abhiyan? A. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has spread a lot of awareness about the need for a pollution-free and clean environment by bringing to light the sheer amount of waste we generate daily and lack of disposal options for it. Every day I get a number of Thaneites calling me to seek guidance to implement the process of solid waste management. I have helped set up composting units in 16 housing societies and one school and guided 21 other societies and two educational institutions with the process. Q. The TMC authorities and political leaders are promising to transform Thane into a Smart City. Do you think this is a distant dream when the efforts should be to turn into a smart community and a sustainable city? A. The first step for a Smart City is the formation of a smart community that works towards sustainability. We need to join hands with the authorities and do our bit to make a bigger difference on a larger scale.

Not sure if your child is bunking classes? Two Thane youths have a solution to your problem NAVEETA SINGH | Updated: Jul 16, 2016, 07:30 AM IST, DNA Ever since information technology has shrunk the world into a global village, there is an app to meet your every need. Accordingly, parents who worry about their children's safety and also their academic activities can now keep a tab on the same through an app called '360 track', developed by 'Titwala locals'. He also said that this got them thinking and they came up with a system that has five components — a device, smart card, SMS, online software and mobile app. The device is installed at the entrance of the school/college/class and the smart card is given to the students. As soon as the student enters the premises of the educational institution, an SMS is sent to his or her parents immediately. Moreover, parents can go online and learn about their ward's attendance, marks, notice board, etc. "Since both parents work in a 9 AM - 6 PM work culture, they do not have the time to go to their child's school. So, with this app, they can also chat with the teacher and vice versa," Swapnil said. The app has been installed in Jayraj classes in Kalyan and they have also just signed a deal with a convent school in Thane, he added.

Thane Municipal Corporation to raze small stalls to curb encroachment NAVEETA SINGH | Updated: Jul 16, 2016, 08:12 AM IST, DNA After demolishing shops and structures for widening roads in Thane, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has now taken stock of small stalls that encroach upon footpaths. On July 14, the TMC removed over 100 stalls, handcarts and small shops from the Naupada and Vartaknagar areas. "They encroached upon the footpath leaving no space for people to walk in. As a result, many people had to resort to jaywalking on the roads," said a TMC official. "Hence, TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal ordered the officials to remove these structures immediately," he added. During the demolition drive, the local politicians did create a furore, but the civic officials paid no heed to them. "There are hardly any footpaths on which people can walk as they are encroached upon by these hawkers and Chinese food stalls," said Manish Gokhale, a Thane resident. "We have to walk on the roads during peak hours, which creates traffic jams," he added. Since the month of March, the TMC has undertaken road-widening at various locations in Thane, like the station area, Hari Nivas circle, Ghodbunder road, etc, and over 4,000 structures were demolished. In order to keep these roads free of hawkers, the Thane traffic police have also formed a special squad to conduct raids on the encroachers.

2016-07-14In last 3 yrs, fines collected by Thane RTO from overloaded vehicles drop by 93% - Times of India
In last 3 yrs, fines collected by Thane RTO from overloaded vehicles drop by 93% Shrutika Sukhi | Jul 14, 2016, 10.57 PM IST Thane: The fine money recovered from overloaded trucks and commercial vehicles brimming with excess cargo and speeding through the highways connecting the Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Vasai and Acchad belt has slipped by a stunning 67% in the last three years, clearly indicating the failure of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to penalize the violaters of road traffic safety rules. The penalty amount gathered by the RTO officials and the flying squads in these townships during April 2015-March 2016, totaled Rs 5.48 crore, as against the Rs 16.53 crore collected during April 2013-March 2014. Overloaded vehicles are the primary cause of the fatal accidents. The RTO is tasked to discipline these violaters with a round-the-clock check on the roads and has the executive powers to impose a hefty penalty and at times confiscate the offending vehicle. "In the last three years, these RTO offices collectively contributed to nearly Rs 32 crore revenue to the state government from the fines levied on overloaded vehicles. However, this revenue could have more than doubled had the officials decided to take stringent action against those caught for overloading. As against 1.07 lakh commercial vehicles checked for overloading in 2013-14, the RTO checked just 67,000 vehicles in 2015-16,'' said a state government official. He said the Thane RTO has recorded a fall of a whopping 93%in its fine collections from 2013-14 to 2015-16. "Three years back, the Thane RTO had collected Rs 7. 45 crore in fines from overloaded vehicles. Surprisingly, these figures slipped to just Rs 47.29 lakh in 2015-16," the officials said. "The revenue from the Acchad RTO fell by 55% in three years. The fine collected in 2015-16 was Rs 1.32 cr as against Rs 3 cr three years back," he said.

The police have, so far, made most of the arrests from Nashik and have recovered close to Rs 10 crore of the total Rs 11 crore stolen from the cash management firm. Thane Central Jail radio station awaits Amitabh Bachchan's dates for launch Kavita Yadav | 13 Jul 2016 12:50 MUMBAI: Thane Central Jail radio station is just short of a few wires which should be right in their places in a couple of days and so should their RJs. Thane Central Jail has been working on starting a radio station that would keep the prisoners entertained from 6:30 am to 6 pm every day. For the same, the jail authorities have created a seperate studio and also brought in all the equipment required for the smooth functioning of the station. According to Jail Superintendent, Hiralal Jadhav, everything is in place except for a few formalities to be put into place and some RJ training. The prisoners themselves will be hosting in Hindi, English and Marathi. "We have some well-educated prisoners who can speak in these languages. Thus, they will be seen anchoring the shows. We will take some help from established RJs to train them for a while," said Jadhav. They will also try roping in well-known RJs occasionally to motivate the prisoners to do better, added the Jail Superintendent. The songs to be played on this station too will be a mix of Hindi and Marathi. There will be more Bollywood and spiritual songs. So, will there also be royalty charges applicable on these Bollywood songs? "I don't think so," quipped Jadhav. A lot of things still have to be worked out with the jail authorities lacking experience in running a radio station. They are open to suggestions and learning more about it to ensure the best is delivered to the jail inmates, Jadhav said. The radio station at the moment is being funded by an NGO and an MLA whose names weren't disclosed. And in all probability, the station will begin functioning between 18 to 30 July 2016. Everyone at the Thane jail is expecting superstar Amitabh Bachchan to inaugurate the radio station, but they haven't managed to get his dates yet. "We are waiting for Amitabh Bachchan's nod and trying to get our higher officers' dates to inaugurate the station," ended Jadhav. Yerwada Central Prision, Pune and Tihar Jail, Delhi already have radio stations that are hosted by inmates. Well-known Bollywood face Sanjay Dutt hosted a show for Yerwada radio station, that turned out to be a hit during his stay there.

2016-07-13Woman, kin awarded Rs 10.93 lakh compensation in Thane mishap case - Mid-Day
Woman, kin awarded Rs 10.93 lakh compensation in Thane mishap case By PTI |Posted 13-Jul-2016 Thane: A man has been directed to pay Rs 10.93 lakh as compensation to a woman and her mother-in-law in a road mishap case of 2010 by district Motor Accident and Claims Tribunal (MACT), while absolved the insurance firm of the liability. District Judge K D Vadane in his judgement pronounced recently stated that one of the respondents, previous owner of the offending four-wheeler, was also absolved from the liability as he had already sold it off. Claimants Rashi Gupta (37) and her mother-in-law Sudha Gupta (62) told the tribunal that while they were travelling on their two-wheeler on January 21, 2010, in Vashi area, a car being driven negligently in a rash manner hit them, injuring them grievously. The duo stated that they incurred over Rs 10 lakh for their treatment. Judge Vadane observed that the first owner of the vehicle Dhawani S Gadha had sold his car to Shyamlal Adnanani, the present owner, in 2007, and hence, was not liable to pay the compensation. Gadha had appeared before the judge. Respondent Adnanani did not appear before the tribunal and hence, the case was declared ex-parte against him. Counsel for the insurance firm A K Tiwari, told the tribunal that the policy was taken for the said car on the date of the accident but there was a difference in time of the mishap and policy purchased. It pointed out that the accident took place at 12.20 PM, while the policy was issued at 4.23 PM on the date of the accident. Hence at the time of the accident, the policy was not valid and that it cannot entertain the claim. The counsel also cited a Supreme Court judgement in a case - National Insurance Company Ltd V/s Sobina Iakai and others reported in (2007). The judge observed that in view of observation made by the apex court, the policy becomes operative since the time of commencement mentioned in the policy. "In this case, the policy shows that it commenced from 16.23 hrs of January 21, 2010. Thus, at about 12.20 hrs of the same day the policy was not in existence. Therefore, offending vehicle was not insured with opponent insurance company at the time of the accident. Thus, it is not responsible to pay the compensation," the judge said.

2016-07-12Thane: Ambernath MIDC looks to environment minister for help - Mid-Day
Thane: Ambernath MIDC Looks To Environment Minister For Help Jul 12, 2016, 09:20 IST While There Was No Relief From The National Green Tribunal In Yesterday’s Hearing, State Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam Vowed To Help The Local Units The future continues to look grim for the Ambernath industrial hub, which received a further setback yesterday, when the National Green Tribunal refused to overthrow the closure notice sent to the 87 chemical units within the Additional MIDC.The matter will be up for hearing again on July 29, when the MPCB will respond to the Additional Ambernath Manufacturers Association (AAMA), which is now also a party in the case. Until then, the local business owners have pinned their hopes on state environment minister Ramdas Kadam, who paid a visit to the CETP yesterday and assured AAMA of his help. On Thursday, all the factories were forced to shut down by the Maharashtra Pollution Control board (MPCB) because of the build-up of toxic waste at the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) — an issue that mid-day has been following for the past three weeks. Four days later, Kadam visited the plant along with environment secretary Satish Gavai, who is also chairman of the MPCB. Both were shocked to learn that the plant was still under lock, even though the MIDC authorities had handed over the operation and maintenance to AAMA in February. AAMA president Umesh Tayade said, “Both minister and secretary were annoyed when they saw the lock on the main gate of the CETP and demanded that a police FIR be registered immediately against those responsible, including MIDC officials. The minister assured that he will try and persuade MPCB to withdraw the closure notice.” However, it’s not going to be that simple, since the issue is mired in several legal battles. For one, after the original plant operator challenged MIDC’s decision to terminate its contract, the CETP was put under lock following a status quo order by Kalyan court. Apart from the Kalyan court proceedings, the matter is also under arbitration upon the order of Bombay High Court.

Marginal drop in Thane FYJC 3rd list cut-offs Freny Fernandes | TNN | Jul 13, 2016, 01.30 AM IST THANE: The third merit list for first-year junior colleges (FYJC) announced on Tuesday saw a marginal drop in the cut-off percentages in top city colleges. While the percentage has dropped 4-6% in the third list in St John the Baptist Junior College and Joshi Bedekar Junior College, Shubham Raje Junior College did not need a third list. Parmeshwar Gatkal, founder and principal of Shubham Raje Junior College, said, "We have 86 seats for commerce stream and 320 for science, which were claimed in the second list. "City students who were hoping to get into these colleges through the third list, but couldn't because of the high cut-off scores, are now looking for a seat in any college." I secured 82% in SSC exam and wanted to pursue commerce in Shubham Raje College. I am now taking admission in another college here," said Prakruti Radane, a Ghodbunder Road area resident. Of the 1-lakh plus students who cleared SSC exam this year, over 28,000 passed with distinction and over 35,000 came under the first class category. Students who have secured admission in the third betterment merit list will have to confirm it by paying their fees between July 13 and 14. A fourth merit list will be announced on July 18. The situation was no different in Mumbai's top colleges, where even after the third list was out, seats remained out of reach for students who scored below 85%. "We had only a few cancellations. In fact, we have had years when the cut-offs didn't change even in the second and third lists," said Parvathi Venkatesh, principal, Mulund College of Commerce, where the difference between the first list and third list cut-offs was only three marks. Students have to take provisional admission on Wednesday and Thursday. Principals are warning students not to get their hopes up, as "there were just a few seats for the third list, so there will be even lesser left for students in the fourth list," said Vidyadhar Joshi, vice-principal, Vaze Kelkar College.

12 major disruptions occurred just in Kalyan-Thane section in six months Manoj Badgeri | TNN | Jul 11, 2016, 06.04 AM IST Thane: The busy Thane-Kalyan section has witnessed nearly 12 major snags, resulting in disruptions, in the last six months alone, raising questions on Central Railway's maintenance standards. This figure excludes the multiple instances of engine or rake failure in the same period. Here is a break-up of the 12 snags, just for an idea of where the faults lie: seven failures involving overhead equipment; two signal faults; three rail fractures. Every incident badly affected rail traffic movement across the network. A railway official, speaking off the record, blamed the problems on poor maintenance. An RTI query by activist Anil Galgali revealed that the stretch contributes nearly Rs 56 lakh to CR's daily collections of Rs 2.19 crore, thus accounting for nearly 23% of CR's daily revenue. Of 38.56 lakh commuters ferried by CR, nearly 9.2 lakh are from the suburbs in the section. Despite this, the stretch remains among the most neglected and hasn't seen any visible improvement for the 18 months since the railway minister's promise of better service. A Central Railway official said the lines between Kalyan and Thane are saturated and the situation will improve only after the fifth and sixth corridors are implemented.

Moreover, the officers managed to recover the firearm yesterday following a four-hour-long search operation. The revolver was recovered after a four-hour search The case: On July 2, Rajbahadur Yadav (38) registered a complaint at the Karjat GRP police station about his bag being stolen from the luggage rack. In his complaint, Yadav told the cops that he was on his way to Uttar Pradesh after attending his niece's birthday party and was supposed to get off at Kalyan to catch a connecting train. Yadav said, I boarded the last local from Thane on July 2. Since I had downed a few pegs at the party, I dozed off at Diva station. When I woke up, the same train had reached Bhivpuri station after becoming a CST-bound local in the morning. Upon reaching for my bag, I realised it was missing. I went back to Karjat and registered a case of theft with the GRP. In his complaint, Yadav said the bag contained crucial documents, including his ID card, PAN card, and a few clothes. But above all, it had a .32 calibre licensed revolver worth Rs 90,000 loaded with three bullets worth Rs 270 each. Inspector Santosh Dhanavate said, Following Yadav's FIR, we formed a team along with Karjat police to trace the accused. Following a week-long investigation, we detained five to six sweepers deployed at Karjat yard. Following sustained interrogations, one of the sweepers confessed to the crime and said he panicked after finding a revolver in the bag, following which he dumped it in the nearby nullah. The sweeper was identified as Ambivli resident Akash Navnat Gaikwad (25). He was booked under Section 379 (theft) of the IPC and is now in GRP custody. Following Gaikwad's confession, they pressed a few labourers and a JCB into action last morning at the spot where he had dumped the revolver. First we stopped the flow of water and then used the JCB to desilt the nullah. We recovered the firearm following a four-hour-long search operation. Thanking the cops for recovering his revolver, Yadav said, I lost five kilos in the last one week due to stress. But thanks to the police, I can now heave a sigh of relief.

2016-07-09Thane: CR begins razing structures around Parsik tunnel - Mid-Day
Thane: CR begins razing structures around Parsik tunnel By Shashank Rao |Posted 09-Jul-2016 A day after mid-day reported about the proposed action planned by Indian Railway's top engineering boss to remove encroachments on the Parsik Hill, the Central Railways (CR) authorities claim that demolition has already begun. The CR has demolished an illegal toilet near the tunnel and will remove other illegal structures. The officials claim that illegal structures are being removed near Parsik tunnel, creating more buffer space between the rail lines and road. Demolition work is underway even now. We have already demolished the illegal toilet that was there near the Kalyan end of Parsik tunnel, said a senior CR official. There are upto 200 shanties that could be demolished as they are dangerously located and the residents could suffer during landslides in the near future, if any. In fact as per plans, the railways are pushing the retaining wall which is like a boundary to prevent unwanted things from falling on rail tracks further by 3-5 metres. When the landslide occurred on June 20, at least 15 metres of the wall was in poor condition and 10 metres of it was immediately brought down after stopping train services. In totality, a good 35 metres of the wall is in bad shape and needs immediate reconstruction. The officials claim that this work of strengthening the retaining wall will be completed by December 2016. The Thane Municipal Corporation is already asking the locals staying on Parsik hill illegally, to leave. Railway Board member AK Mittal told mid-day that he has already asked the CR, to speak to the municipal corporation, to remove illegal settlements and structures along the tracks that infringe railway lines, and affect safe train running. The officials claim that they are also repairing the Parsik tunnel that was built in 1873 internally as it has deteriorated due to the leakage from the illegal structures above.

BEST wants Thane-like elevated decks at stations, writes to rlys By Kamal Mishra, Mumbai Mirror | Jul 10, 2016, 03.07 AM IST The transport undertaking says hassle-free access to buses at six busy stations will increase its commuter base by 15 per cent and improve its earnings. In the red over falling patronage and higher operating costs, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport has sought the help of the railways to improve its earnings. The transport undertaking has sent a proposal to the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) requesting it to build elevated decks at six city stations to enable train commuters board buses without any hassles. The BEST management has based its proposal on the success of the SATIS (station area traffic improvement scheme) project at Thane. Under the project, all the foot over bridges at the station lead to an elevated platform on the west side. This concourse is exclusively meant for Thane Municipal Transport buses. According to the bus undertaking, SATIS projects at the six busy stations, including Kurla, Sion, Bandra, Dadar and Andheri, can push its commuter base of 30 lakh up by about 15 percent and increase its revenues. At present, it incurs a loss of nearly Rs 2 crore a day. "Because of heavy traffic, our buses cannot go up to the exit points at railway stations. As a result, commuters walking out of stations take to other modes of transport," said Jagdish D Patil, general manager of BEST. The senior official said RLDA responded positively to their communication and both sides are expected to meet in the coming week to discuss the proposal.

2016-07-08Dirty reality: Thane's lungs choke on litter - Times of India
Dirty reality: Thane's lungs choke on litter Freny Fernandes | Jul 8, 2016, 01.24 PM IST Thane: Thane's Yeoor hills was once a tourist hotspot, which attracted various tourists especially during the rains, but of late it has become a dumpyard. In the past few months, this green patch has lost its charm. Revellers who come to visit the place leave behind the leftover food, rubbish waste etc. making the area dirty as there are no dustbins in the locality. Even the villagers from the adivasi padas located in the heart of SGNP's Yeoor range claim that they do not have a designated dustbin and have to throw the waste just in the open. Yeoor's beauty is marred by piles of waste strewn along the pathways and outside the homes of the tribal communities. Heaps of rotting food, plastic, rodent carcasses and other waste thrown away by hoteliers, locals and even tourists attract strays and rodents. The growing rubbish has marred the heart of the green forest the city boasts off. Environmentalists working in this area worry that the heart of the forest will soon turn into a disease spreading wasteland.Rohit Joshi, the founder of Yeoor Environment Society which has been working with forest related issues said, "There are no dustbins in the area because of which the ignorant tribals dump waste along the streets. As the corporation's waste picking van is infrequent here the waste piles up. Even when we conduct clean-up drives we have to take the waste down to the city ourselves.""This can spread diseases to locals as well as the strays that look for food in this rubbish. If a wild predator living in the forest happens to prey on a diseased prey, it could spread diseases to the fauna in the Yeoor forest," he added. Forest and civic officials blame the issue on the locals and visitors who litter in the forest areas. Sanjay Waghmode, the range forest officer in Yeoor, said, "In a clean-up drive last month, we cleared the village and forest area and found 16 tonnes of waste. The TMC ghantagadi comes here daily. Though it picks up the waste, locals, hoteliers and visitors dump again. We have appealed them on numerous occasions to stop this and help keep Yeoor clean." "Despite having clean-up drives this area is always full of waste. We are considering taking stringent action on offenders so that people stop littering," added a civic official. In a clean-up drive last month, we cleared the village and forest area and found 16 tonnes of waste. The TMC ghantagadi comes here daily. Though it picks up the waste, locals, hoteliers and visitors dump again.

A heist of Rs 9 crore was reported in Thane on June 28. Kiran Salunke, 36, resident of Pawan Nagar, Hari Bhau Wagh, 43, a resident of Ambad and Varun Shinde, went to Tirupati after collecting their share of spoils of the heist. Before leaving, they hid Rs 1.4 crore at the residence of Kiran's brother-in-law in Jowhar, about 40 km from Nashik. The trio took Rs 5 lakh with them and hired a cab from Tirupati to Bangalore. After a brief stay in Bangalore, they went to Shirdi and Pune, where they purchased clothes and later went to Vani, about 60 km from Nashik. They extended their trip and went to Saputara in Gujarat, about 40 km from Vani and offered Rs 25,000 to warkaris travelling to Pandharpur. Deputy superintendent of police (Chandwad) Devidas Patil said, "After returning to Vani at 8am on Tuesday, they went to Ozarkhed dam to celebrate with liquor and fish. The trio, who were already under pressure after the arrest of nine accomplices, decided to turn in to the police. The trio cooked up a story about an attack on them and that Rs 1.40 crore was stolen from them." "It was then decided that Shinde would injure the other two to create a crime scene and convince the police that they were targeted while fleeing. The plan went as per plan and Shinde fled the spot after hitting the Salunke and Wagh with stones," added Patil. When local villagers called the police after seeing the two injured, the duo claimed they were intercepted by a van carrying six persons, including the driver, who offered to drop them off to Nashik. "They said the passengers had got into a scuffle with them. The driver of the van and other passengers had beaten them up and fled with the booty," he said. However, under police investigation, they revealed their real plan. "A case of robbery was registered against unknown persons. Salunke and Wagh were admitted to civil hospital for treatment. The hidden cash of Rs 1.36 crore has been recovered from Jowhar by Thane police and cops are in the process of counting the money," said Patil. After several rounds of arguments by both the defence and the prosecution during the final hearing on the bail applications, special judge HM Patwardhan rejected the bail applications of Manoj Jain, Punit Shringi, Rajendra Dimri and Babasaheb Dhotre. Jain is the former director of Avon Life Sciences Pvt Ltd from where over 20 tonnes of ephedrine was recovered in April. He is suspected to be a close aide of international drug lord Vicky Goswami, who is the husband of Kulkarni. Shringi was a consultant with the company while Dimri the production manager. Special public prosecutor Shishir Hiray, who opposed the bail plea, pointed out the company's 'deliberate delay' in filing returns to the Narcotics Control Bureau and called it as an 'after thought' to put records right after Jain was arrested. In a recent hearing, the defence counsel said the management was helpless in complying with the statutory requirements and filing of returns within the stipulated period as all records had been seized by the probe team.

Rs 9-crore Thane heist: Accused stage fake robbery to hold on to the money By Faisal Tandel |Posted 07-Jul-2016 With the police hard on their heels for the Rs 9-crore Thane heist, two of the accused decided to turn themselves in, but could not bring themselves to part with the loot. So, they staged a fake robbery, this time posing as the victims. On Tuesday night, they surrendered at the Vani police station and claimed that they had been robbed by a group of 5 to 6 people who fled with Rs 1.4 crore. They claimed that the robbers assaulted them with a huge rock, said a police officer from Nashik Rural Police. The two accused, identified as Haribhau Wagh (42) and Kiran Salunkhe (30), are both residents of the CIDCO area at Dutta Nagar in Nashik. After they turned themselves in, the Nashik police called the Thane Crime Branch. We reached the police station and the procedure for FIR was going on, when the accused changed their statement and claimed that only Rs 1.5 lakh had been robbed. Suspecting something was wrong, we took them to the spot to investigate, said a Thane police official. At the supposed crime scene, there was a dhaba where the accused had had dinner the night before. The dhaba workers and local residents said the two accused had dinner with another man and had left the dhaba safely. Then we found out that the accused had faked the whole thing to avoid being beaten up by the police, said the Thane cop. The police discovered that Wagh and Salunkhe were accompanied by fellow accused Varun Shinde. They went into the forest a few metres away from the dhaba. Shinde smashed a rock on Wagh's and Salunkhe's legs. In that injured state, the two approached the cops, said the officer, adding, Salunkhe's left leg is fractured and he is admitted in a Nashik hospital. We are looking for Shinde and have recovered Rs 1.4 crore from the accused. This brings the total amount of money seized to Rs 8.4 crore. The number of arrested accused has gone up to 13, including two robbers from Nashik and two more accused who surrendered to the Thane police yesterday. Vaibhav Lahamge and Laxman Goverdhane from Navi Mumbai. No cash was recovered from them.

TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal has been spearheading demolition drives across the city since last November razing scores of structures, including extensions to shops and even commercial units, single and multi-storeyed buildings coming in the way of constructing roads marked in the development plan. As many as 2,095 permanent structures were completely razed and the remaining 871 were partially demolished. An official estimate reveals around 75 acres or nearly 30 hectares land was freed up in the continuous drives held in the city. A cursory tally of the recently concluded drive shows that around Rs 8 crore of the tax payers' money was spent on pulling down these structures. Officials claim that majority of the structures were illegal and had to be razed to develop wide roads in the city. The volume of land freed was major along the Ghodbunder Road for developing service lanes along with Mumbra and Pokhran roads where the streets were proving to be inadequate to bear the traffic load. The TMC has also managed to provide alternate accommodation to those displaced by the demolition drives, said additional municipal commissioner Sunil Chavan. Activists and alert residents welcomed the move but have now sought an explanation from the officials who were responsible for these illegal structures to come up and usurp valuable public spaces. Activist Dayanand Nene who received information that barely 17 per cent of structures in the city were legal to his RTI query, said, "Stern action should be taken against officials found guilty of allowing illegal structures. It is criminal to spend a massive volume of public money on razing the encroachments," he said.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to take back its weekly 60-hour water cuts if the heavy rains continue this week as well. "Owing to good rainfall last weekend, the superintendent engineer of the irrigation department has permitted the TMC, MIDC and STEM to pick up water directly from the river," said Ravindra Khadtale from the TMC's water department. "So we no longer need to lift water from dams to provide it to the city," he added. He further said that this week's abundant rainfall will also lead to water cuts being lifted in the city. "If it continues to rain this well, then the weekly water cuts will be discontinued during the rainy season," he added. Since November 2015, the residents of Thane district have been facing water cuts. It started with 48 hours of waters cut in Thane city and, from January this year, it increased to 60 hours or up to three days a week. "With improved water levels in the rivers, we do not need to lift water from the dams," Khadtale added.

Abu Salem Wedding Probe To Be Reopened: Thane Top Cop All India | Faisal Tandel, Mid-day.com | Updated: July 05, 2016 11:58 IST Mumbai: Mid-day's expose on dreaded underworld don Abu Salem living it up on train journeys for court hearings to Delhi and Lucknow has given the police an opportunity to open their investigation, which had hit a wall, into reports of the gangster's marriage with Mumbra resident Sayyed Bahaar Kausar. Following reports of the couple's marriage in 2014, the Thane police had initiated a probe into the matter. They had tried to ascertain if Kausar had been in Salem's vicinity by triangulating her cellphone locations, whenever he had been on the move for case hearings. But the investigation hit a dead end when Kausar claimed that her phone whose call records the police had dug up as part of their probe had been used by her maternal grandfather, who travelled with the don since he handled his paperwork. Lack of evidence: Parambir Singh, commissioner of police, Thane said, "An inquiry was initiated by Dnyeshwar Fadtare, additional commissioner of police (administration), following an order by the MCOCA court on investigating the reports published by a newspaper in 2014. A report was sent to the court, stating that there was not enough evidence to prove the allegations of marriage. The findings were inconclusive. The officers also asked the court to prohibit the gangster's movement outside the state and to conduct trials via video-conferencing, instead." The photographs with mid-day have now called Kausar's bluff. In them, she is seen accompanying Salem on many of his train journeys for case hearings. "Now with this development (the mid-day report), we will investigate the photographs to find out the truth," said Singh. 10 probe teams: Around 10 Thane crime branch teams had been ordered to probe the claims of marriage following the order by the MCOCA court. "Investigation looked into the call records of Kausar and Salem's advocate. Even CCTV camera footages from the railway stations that Salem had visited were pulled. The statements of Kausar's relatives and friends and of Salem's police escort team were taken," said a senior officer who had been the primary investigating officer of the case. Based on the call records of the number that the police thought was Kausar, the police traced the mobile phone to Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Lucknow and several places in Maharashtra on many occasions. "We found that the locations coincided with the regions Salem was travelling through," said the officer. Kausar was called in for questioning, but she claimed that her phone was being used by her maternal grandfather, Abdul Razzak Menon alias Bapu. Menon told the police that he used to travel with Salem since he handled his documents for a fee. Two members of Salem's escort team, Manohar Pawar, then inspector from Shanti Nagar police station, and M Karkar, then inspector from Kalwa police station, had told the investigating teams that the don and Kausar had never met during the train journeys. The photographs available with mid-day show otherwise. Pawar is now a senior inspector with Bhoiwada police in Bhiwandi, and Kalwa a senior inspector at Shrinagar police station. The probe report was submitted before the MCOCA court on May 30, 2014.

2016-07-02Thane robbers were about to flee Maharashtra - The Hindu
Thane robbers were about to flee Maharashtra TOPICS Maharashtra Mumbai Police teams sent to Nashik found them distributing part of the Rs. 9.16 crore they had stolen. The accused in the Rs. 9-crore heist at a cash management company in Thane were nabbed by the crime branch just two hours before they could flee the State. Police said the accused were distributing the proceeds of the crime among themselves when they were caught in Nashik. Checkmate Cash Management was robbed of Rs. 9.16 crore by a gang of armed robbers early on Tuesday. On Thursday night, Thane police arrested six accused including a former and a serving employee of the company, and are now searching for more suspects. The stolen cash was packed in three tin barrels. The accused fled in three SUVs which split up in different directions. Five of them, carrying one barrel, fled to Satpur in Nashik and stopped at a field belonging to an accused for the night. Meanwhile, in Thane, police started making inquiries with the firm's employees. One of them, Amol Karle, 26, was evasive and nervous. The police had suspected an insider's hand as the robbers knew the location of the CCTV console and disabled it by removing its Digital Video Recorder. DCP (Crime) Parag Manere, Thane police, said, The robbers had held Karle at gunpoint. After questioning, we established his involvement, after which we identified the other accused. Based on Karle's interrogation, two police teams went to Satpur and found five accused distributing the money among themselves on Wednesday. The accused, Nitesh Avhad (22), Mayur Kadam (21), Harishchandra Mate (30), Umesh Wagh (28), and Akash Chavan (29), were brought to Thane and arrested the same night. A Thane Crime Branch officer said, Chavan quit Checkmate some months ago after a disagreement with the management. He got in touch with Wagh, an old friend, and told him about large amounts of cash handled at the firm every day. Wagh, a history sheeter, roped in the other accused and hatched the plan. Chavan then involved Karle, whom he had referred for a job at Checkmate. Karle provided the gang with information about the firm's CCTV console and security arrangements, and also told them that cash amounts were highest on Monday nights. The gang planned the heist for Monday night. Besides the seven accused who executed the robbery, three acted as lookouts, three drove the getaway vehicles and several more were involved in reconnaissance. State DGP Pravin Dixit said, The firm should have kept the local police in the loop about the fact that they were handling large amounts of cash on a daily basis. They should have informed us about the identities of their current and former employees. We are in touch with the Reserve Bank of India to work out guidelines that can be laid down in this regard.

Thane cops crack Rs 9.16-crore heist, nab six By IANS |Posted 01-Jul-2016 Thane: Moving swiftly, the Thane police cracked the Rs 9.16-crore armed dacoity of a cash van on June 28 by nabbing six persons and recovering Rs 3.12 crore from them, a top official said in Thane on Friday. Making the announcement at a joint press conference, Director-General of Police Praveen Dixit and Thane Police Commissioner Parambir Singh said it was 'an insider job' by an employee and a former staffer who were involved in a two-month long planning and final execution of the heist here on Tuesday. Among the six persons nabbed are four who were part of the actual dacoity operation that day at the Thane office of the Vadodara-based cash management company, Checkmate Services Pvt Ltd. "Thane Commissioner of Police Parambir Singh and the police have done a good job by solving the case within two days," Dixit said, lauding his officers and investigators. Giving details, Singh said that one suspect had been detained two days ago and after using 'human and technical intelligence', the police zeroed in on the culprits. Among them are an employee, Amol Kale, and a former employee, Akash Chauhan alias Chindya, who had left the company last February. While quitting, Chauhan had recommended Kale as his replacement for the job which was accepted. "The entire conspiracy was planned to the last detail by Umesh Wagh, the kingpin, along with Chauhan over the past two months," Singh said. All the major players are from Nashik and even a vehicle used by them is from Nashik. The police has recovered it, he added. "After committing the crime, they met at a place outside Thane and distributed the booty with their other accomplices. Then they left for their respective hometowns or native places. Our teams are trying to track them down and we shall nab them soon," Singh said. Soon after the dacoity, the company officials and owners met and admitted severe lapses on their part with assurance to rectify these. "The police was not aware of such a huge cash movement by a company here, or we would have taken preventive measures. The security systems are very lax, virtually nil, at the company offices. We have also approached other cash management companies and banks, and asked them to inform us of any such large volume cash movements so that we can provide security," Singh told media persons. The state was shocked when at least 7-8 dacoits wielding guns, revolvers and knives stormed into the Checkmate offices near Teen Haat Naka and escaped with the Rs 9.16 crore cash meant for refilling banks ATMs, early last Tuesday. The company headquartered in Vadodara, Gujarat, also has branches in 24 Indian states offering cash management services to banks, corporate, financial institutions, etc.

Loo & behold: Innovative public toilet comes up in Thane DISHA SHETTY | Updated: Jul 1, 2016, 08:25 AM IST, DNA It is easy to mistake the gleaming structure made of perforated material along the highway at Thane's Marathon Chowk as a commercial space. Instead, it is actually an Agasti restroom, or public toilet, which is the result of the vision of two young men. Sahej Mantri (28) spent two years working with an NGO called Gram Vikas in the development sector in Odisha, which focused on sanitation among other aspects. Forced to return home to Mumbai following a bout of malaria, Mantri decided it was time to apply what he had learned in the rural areas to an urban setting. He found his partner in architect Rohan Chavan (30), who, having worked under iconic architects Christopher Benninger and Charles Correa, was itching to do something innovative. "Once Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal saw our plan, he approved it in 10 minutes," Mantri says. While the designs were approved in October last year, it took time to get the logistics in place and find the right location. The toilet has been designed in such a way that it makes maximum use of natural light. There is also a central space where phones can be charged and amateur artists can hold exhibitions. "The design is in response to nature. Flooring is joint free and seamless, making it easy to clean," Chavan said. While users will be charged Rs5, the duo has already thought of ways to make the toilet sustainable. "There is enough space for an ATM machine to be installed. We can sell the space on the outside to companies, where they can market their products," Mantri added. There is already a community toilet that has been thrown open free of cost at the Mulund Check Naka, which is used mainly by the truck drivers who park there. The duo hopes that the revenue generated by this toilet will be used to cross subsidise that one. The two young men have plans for several similar restrooms — 10 in a 15-km radius to be precise — so that the entire venture can be financially sustainable. "We have designed a host of restrooms that can be customised based on the requirements of the area. The idea is to make the city more interactive through such spaces," Chavan said. While the Agasti restroom is set to be thrown open this week, Mantri, when asked what next, answered, "We hope to build more toilets."

Fortunately, she managed to hang onto water hyacinth plants and stayed afloat for over 11 hours, until she was rescued. The incident took place on Wednesday night near the Walivli bridge at Badlapur and she was rescued on Thursday. An alert security guard, Ramesh Bhoir, (35), a resident of Badlapur who works for Mohan Group, a construction company, spotted her. He said, "Our site is just adjoining the river. Around 6 am yesterday, I was on a round, when I heard the screams of a girl, but couldn't see anything in the river. So I went to the Walivli bridge and saw that just below it, a girl had managed to stay afloat by hanging onto water hyacinth plants. I immediately called the police station and fire brigade. "Bhoir claims the fire brigade reached the spot within 15 minutes but the police came at 7:45 am, after the rescue. The girl, identified as Ekta Tulsiram Siani, a resident of Vartak Nagar in Thane, was rescued by 6:45 am. "When we questioned her as to how she fell in the river, she claimed that her father, along with his friend, threw her in," added Bhoir. Police said the girl said she was thrown at 8 pm. In her statement to police she said that she was taken by her father who lured her with a new pair of shoes and threw her in the river. Bhagwat Sonone, chief officer, Kulgaon-Badlapur Fire Brigade, said, "We received a call at 6:10 am. The river is around 25 feet deep in the area, and the bridge is almost 40 feet above it. Tying a rope to an air tube, we let it down and rescued the girl within 20 minutes. We asked the girl to sit in the tube."Police says KG Gavit, Senior Police Inspector, Vartak Nagar police station said, "The mother of the girl approached us late on Wednesday night and registered a missing complaint. As the girl was a minor, we had registered a kidnapping case and started the investigation. On Thursday morning we learnt about a girl found in a Badlapur river. We have sent the girl for a medical test and teams have been formed to trace her father.
